Meet the Bloggers: Basil "Euripides" Berntsen

What do you do for WoW Insider?
I write Gold Capped. I used to write Time is Money and Insider Trader as well, but then I decided to stop trying to categorize my thoughts and simply dump them all into Gold Capped and let my editors sort it out.
What's your main?
I have exactly one level 85 character: my hunter. I raid and PVP with him, as well as use him for my alchemy and blacksmithing businesses. I will continue to have one max-level character until all the jewelcrafting dailies my JC mule does dings him 85 without having set foot outside Stormwind.
I have way too much on my plate to actually take care of my alts. For one, I hate leveling. Once you've seen it once, doing it again doesn't have enough reward to justify the time. Secondly, if I had more playtime to use, I'd use it to do more of what I already do. I could be doing 10-man extensions of my 25-man raid if I had another raid night per week, or I could do more than a rated BG now and then. Starting a second gear grind with another character isn't something that's on my radar.
What's the best 5-man instance in the game? What's the best raid?
All 5-man instances are boring and irrelevant to me once I have what I need from them. The best raid is always the 25-man heroic version of whatever the current raid is; however, assuming we're comparing each raid when they were the best, then I'd have to say Ulduar. It was a long, well-done raid with a lot of depth, and I missed it when it became irrelevant. Black Temple was a close second.
I am well engaged by and enjoy the current raiding design, where each new patch is a small reset and an opportunity to increase your character's gear compared to the last patch. That said, I wish there were more rewards for going back to older raids than an unspendable currency that I might already have earned just by being a raider when the content was fresh. The weekly quests we enjoyed last expansion were a step in the right direction, but I wish there were something more.
What's been your favorite expansion?
Probably The Burning Crusade, although I liked how they opened everything up in Wrath of the Lich King. I'd love it if they could have figured out some design where raid groups had an incentive to experience all the tiers of raiding instead of jumping straight into the latest and greatest tier; however, somehow Blizzard's kept raiding as accessible as it was in Wrath. That said, I am not a game designer and have no idea how that could have been accomplished.
What accomplishments are most proud of in game?
My two greatest in-game accomplishments are the guild I lead and the gold I've made. The guild is run the way I've always wanted my guilds to be run: completely transparently. We posted our charter with a set of rules, and we follow them to the letter. People are given raid spots based on performance and raid composition, not politics. We are light on drama and can accommodate good players with wonky play schedules since we have no minimum attendance.
Gold is what I write about here and is by far the most interesting part of WoW for me. People tend to consider the economy of WoW a necessary evil or worse yet, an unnecessary one. I, on the other hand, find making money to be a very interesting intellectual challenge, on par with any of the other more popular in-game pursuits. I also believe that when WoW is a free-to-play ghost town (or whatever happens to MMO games when they die), it'll be remembered for having had the first really large and important virtual economy. Virtual dragonslaying and player-killing is a commodity -- other games have done them as well or better before WoW, but WoW's economy is unique in its scale.
Making gold is something that's doable with any amount of time. The frequency and duration of your play time is certainly going to have an effect; however, you can play this part of the game even if you have almost no time.
That said, I dump all my unscheduled play time into the money-making game and have achieved a level of success that is rare. I hit the original gold cap a few months after I started writing about it here, and I hit the new gold cap (1 million) right after Cataclysm launched. I now make 20k-60k profit a week, depending on how much time I spend on it and how much my competition plays. Every new patch represents hundreds of thousands of gold earned (and spent ...), mostly through stockpiling goods and releasing them when people get a rush of upgrades.
The last one and a half years has taught me a lot about economics -- not just virtual economics, either. I find myself looking at the world in a whole new way now that I have been thinking and writing about economics, even if only virtual, for so long.
Horde or Alliance?
Alliance all the way. I don't care about lore and I don't read quest text, but it's obvious to me that the Horde are the bad guys and the Alliance are the good guys. I don't want to discuss it, and I don't want to hear how the Horde has factions within them that are more reasonable. The Hordies are good at two things as far as I'm concerned: paying more for my trade goods than Alliance, and PVP. And they're only good at PVP because people who see themselves as "good guys" must tend to be worse at PVP.

I am thoroughly embarrassed by how many times I had to phonetically read this to get it... hilarious though!

@Mortenbra
Alas, my grandmother died a few years ago just short of her 100th birthday. She was quite a character.
Mortenebra Jul 20th 2011 7:34PM
@Ech: I'm sorry to hear that :( But I am grateful to you for sharing that joke... Seems to me that you're doing a fine job carrying on the tradition :)

For all those who are writing that they think Euripides is "harsh" or "being a d-bag" and like AH money making blogs, but suddenly are morally against reading him anymore, please go check out Gevlon at Greedy Goblin. Read a handful of articles. I'll wait right here and then point and laugh as you come running back in fear to the teddy bear that is Euripides.
Go on. I got time.
Yomamma Jul 20th 2011 5:23PM
If I don't like this authors writings, why would I want to read Gevlon's if you say he is more of a DB?
vincekunk Jul 20th 2011 5:35PM
@ Yomamma:
First, note that "harsh" and "d-bag" are in quotes, as having read his column for some time, I do not believe they apply. Second, note that I wrote, "like AH money-making blogs." If you want to read about how to make gold, you would be interested in other such blogs.
Do you not like this authors writings based on the column or this "About the Blogger" column? Because in his column here, as well as in this About the Blogger, he is very straight-forward and businesslike. Time is money, friend.
My point is: if you want to learn how to make gold, AND have issues with said writers personality, you can do much worse and not much better than Euripides.
Yomamma Jul 20th 2011 7:09PM
I can just do without the snobbish and elitist attitude. I get enough of that in game, or when I make the mistake and read the official wow forums. I enjoy reading the articles on wowinsider and I've never seen one written in this tone before. Which I'm very thankful for, otherwise I wouldn't visit here as much as I do now.

carebears...

Really people, you are mad because he plays Alliance and thinks they are good guys and doesn't care if you think differently? Who the F cares what his personal choice is when it comes to what faction to back, that doesn't make him ignorant. It's not like he said, I support Israel and they are the good guys I don't care what you think. Thats the fun of this game, picking what you like and sticking to that. He doesn't like 5 mans after he is done with what he needs, So? He only likes doing the hardest Raid content.. So? All of the people making a big deal about this are just mad because he doesn't like the same things you like? How is this any different than any other video game where you have to pick a side, or quests to do, or what class you want to be. I am just confused why so many people are getting mad because he told you what he likes and no matter what convoluted argument you could make to change his mind, it won't matter because he likes what he likes.

This was awful and did feel forced. Eh really disappointed.

Nice little Q&A.
Always liked Euripides's articles, following a lot of his advise (TSM articles, I'm looking at you) has lead to becoming gold capped myself.
Keep up the great work Basil.

if this article scares away dorks that might try to get in on my action then im all for it.

I don't get where all the hate here is coming from, either. I appreciated Basil's candor and directness; it's also what makes his Gold Capped so good. Like all good instructional writing, Basil's work is clear and concise with a dash of humor, and he doesn't sugar-coat things. I've played WoW since vanilla. I also don't care for WoW lore. I do read quest text, but I admit to skimming from time to time. I also play Alliance. None of these things are wrong in the least. Everyone plays the game in their own way.
Big Shoe Jul 21st 2011 7:35AM
For those who seem to think that the sky is falling because someone thinks the Alliance are "the good guys," here's a news flash: they are. Long before WoW existed, there was Dungeons & Dragons and its countless imitators, and long before that, there was Tolkien, Howard, and actual folklore. Without these influences, WoW would not exist. One of the staples of heroic fantasy is that orcs, goblins trolls and undead are not "cool, edgy, conflicted, or misunderstood." Nor are they meant to be glamorized, humanized or sympathized with. They are simply "monsters" who exist to be fought and defeated by the heroes (that is, the players), who are invariably humans and demi-humans. Period.
I'm not saying that WoW lore follows this idea; it obviously doesn't. But to someone who is familiar with fantasy stereotypes but doesn't delve too deeply into Blizzard lore, the assumption that "men" are good and "monsters" are evil is perfectly natural.

There is mud on both sides of the arena my friend. That's what I think most people take exception to. Both the horde and alliance have been the "bad guy". I don't care if he fancies that the alliance are the good ones and horde are the bad, so much as I think blind idealism in either direction is bad. When it all shakes out, the horde is no more bad than the alliance, and though their practices might seem more savage to the alliance races the horde is not without dignity, goodness, and honor.
I am a proud member of the horde. When I began this game I was alliance for a long time, and was a proud member of the alliance as well. I use to think before I went horde that the alliance were the good guys and the horde were the bad guys, until I read quest texts from the other side and realized that the alliance did just as many bad things to the horde, if not more so.

Good point, Lipstick. I didn't mean to imply that either faction was good or evil with regard to WoW lore. I was simply stating that if you show a non-gamer a picture of an elf and a picture of an orc, most will assume that the elf is the hero and the orc is the monster. That being said, anyone who plays WoW for any length of time knows better than to take the factions at literal face value. There is good, evil, and in something in between in abundance on both sides. :-)

Some of you might know that he's written CriticalQQ before this. A very nice mage blog, I'd say better than Arcane Brilliance here. Basil is a cool guy imo, this article doesn't have to portray that.

Personally .. I've always found Basil to be kind of a jerk when it comes to wow. (I don't know the man in RL and wont speak of his character there) His policies are all about the bottom line, and often divorce themselves from the scruples, and morals I personally think is appropriate when it comes to making gold in game. I am a fair person in game and outside it and try my best to be even with everyone. My motto is people first, money second.
I give Basil credit where credit is due, and thank him for the posts he makes in so far as ... I have learned a thing or two, from him along the way, but I wish he didn't come across as .. so.. rude sometimes. I was hoping this biography would shed a little more .. humane light on the man. Sadly, this article failed to deliver it. Basil just comes across like the jerk he does with his in game policies towards gold making.
I'm disappointed.. I guess I expected more.

Some of you people need to get a life and not read so much into this. People are allowed to have opinions that are not meant to be funny or appeal to everyone.
To be perfectly blunt, I'm sick of doing 5 mans just so I can get valor point capped. I HATE 5 mans. They've been run to death. I hate daily quests, what's the point? These are my opinions and they're not funny and I don't care what anyone thinks.
With all that said, I personally enjoyed the article and I read most of the gold capped articles which are really great and informative.

An Alliance blogger that's strait to the point, and hates the horde? Be still my beating heart!
