Spiritual Guidance: Shadow priest's guide to Shannox

It's pretty miserable here in Boston today. I'm sweating, and not in the sexy, glistening skin way -- in the wring out a T-shirt way. It's, like, 90-something, which to a New Englander is damn hot. And to all you people who live in Las Vegas (Oh ho ho, it's 129 here today, you wimp!), shut up -- you chose to live in a place that's awful year round, not me.
Anyway, this uncomfortable sweatiness has me starved for revenge. Beings of fire, you shall face my wrath!
Over the next few uncomfortable, sweat-stained months of summer, we'll be taking on the bosses of the Firelands right here in Spiritual Guidance in seek of precious relief (and purples). This week: vile hunter Shannox and his adorable flaming skeleton pets.
The fight's basics
In simplest of terms, Shannox is a three-target fight that eventually whittles its way down a single-target beat the clock. Joining Shannox are his "dogs," Riplimb and Rageface. In non-heroic mode, the most common strategy seems to be to kill Rageface first, burn Shannox down near 30%, kill Riplimb, and then finish off Shannox.
So where does a shadow priest begin? Well, obviously, since Rageface needs to die first, he's the one you're going to want to prioritize rolling your full complement of DOTs on. Shannox needs to be worked down to 30% as your team kills off the dogs, so he's your second priority. Riplimb has an aggro table and is not tauntable, so avoid attacking him too much at first. Once Rageface is down, Riplimb is your key target.
Know Your Target: Shannox
Shannox will be up for the entire fight, so you really need to learn how to deal with his abilities first.
- Arcing Slash is Shannox's frontal melee ability. You don't need to know much about it, other than the fact that you should never stand in front of Shannox. Got it?
-
Being a hunter, Shannox will regularly throw out one of two different kinds of traps. Either type will detonate when a player or one of Shannox's dogs runs over it.
- The first kind, the Crystal Prison Trap, will freeze its victims in a (spoiler alert!) crystal prison. If a player gets trapped, he won't take any damage, but he's essentially out of the game until the raid can DPS the high-health prison down to 0%. If a dog gets trapped, it will be immune to damage for a few moments as the prison steadily loses 10% of its health in regular ticks. As a shadow priest, your job is to not run over these traps and to free your hapless raidmates from them as necessary.
- The second kind, Immolation Trap, is a much more painful to the target. If you're hit with it, you'll lose a solid 50% of your health right off the bat, and gain a fire damage debuff that ticks every 3 seconds. You'll also take 40% more damage for 9 seconds. As a shadow priest, your goal is to trick Riplimb and Rageface into triggering these. This is best accomplished by positioning yourself next to an Immolation Trap such that if you gain Rageface's attention, he'll wind up walking right on top of it in order to rage your pretty little face off. The up-front damage that causes Rageface isn't super-important, but the 40% increased damage he'll take for the next 9 seconds is.
- At regular intervals, Shannox will Hurl Spear to the ground near where his dog Riplimb is. When he's about to use the ability, the ground he's targeting will smolder. Priority #1 is to move from the 3-yard epicenter; the damage caused by a direct hit can be deadly. Priority #2 is to move out of the smoldering "eruption" areas; these will explode, causing anyone caught in them to lose about 50% health or so. Priority #3 is to cast Power Word: Shield on yourself; if you're within 50 yards of where the spear lands, you'll take about 50,000 points' worth of (resistable) fire damage.
Know Your Target: Rageface
Rageface usually gives guilds the most trouble, which is why he's usually the target burned down to 0% first. Since he doesn't have an aggro table, you'll frequent find yourself on the business end of a mauling. He really has only one attack you need to know about: Face Rage. (I see what they did there.) Breaking Face Rage requires someone to hit Rageface with an attack that deals more than 30,000 damage. It can turn into a deadly attack if it's not broken ASAP, since the damage dealt by Face Rage increases quickly over time.
Thanks to a hotfix, all attacks during a Face Rage are now guaranteed to be crits. Unfortunately, not all of your crits -- even those from Mind Blast -- will cause more than 30,000 damage. To get to that level, you're going to want to be generating as many Shadow Orbs as you can over the course of the fight, as Shadow Orbs will easily push Mind Blast damage up over 30k. Keep all three targets DOTed up with Shadow Word: Pain if you can.
If you're getting Face Raged, you'll be subject to a stun. Your first instinct may be to use Dispersion, but don't use it immediately. Face Rage's first few ticks hit like a feather. Wait a few seconds for the damage to start getting harder to manage, and then use Dispersion. This buys you the most time in case your teammates struggle to score that 30k hit.
The Key to Victory: Situational awareness
The one thing most DPS players seem to have trouble with on this fight is Shannox's traps. He throws them at players' current locations, so situational awareness is a huge part of beating this fight.
If you're having trouble noticing these traps -- and granted, on certain types of computers with certain types of internet connections, it's not easy -- you may want to stack the deck with a little bit of extra help. The DXE addon, short for Deus Vox Encounters, pretty much smacks you upon the head when Shannox is dropping a trap on your current location. My guild wound up requiring it, and once everyone did, the number of people getting caught in crystal prisons dropped dramatically.
Rummaging for purples
Shannox's loot table runs fairly deep, with a number of i378 items (i391 on heroic mode) that will interest shadow priests. They include:
- Crystal Prison Band, a caster ring with 133 crit and 162 mastery
- Coalwalker Sandals, caster boots with 208 crit, 172 haste, and a yellow socket
- Goblet of Anger, a caster off-hand with 137 spirit and 160 haste
- Smoldering Censer of Purity, a two-handed staff with 310 spirit, 186 haste, 2,334 spellpower, and two red sockets; an especially fine staff for a shadow priest who does a lot of off-spec healing

It was a glorious time watching Fox get mauled over and over and over and over again by flaming skeleton dogs. Apparently, by "feel my wrath" Fox really means that he's going to spend the entire encounter taking a dirt nap. I guess you just need that extra rest once you get up to his age.
Also, I really don't think he's ever experienced a "sexy, glistening skin" kind of sweat. Given that walking down his stairs to get a glass of water practically causes him to pant, he pretty much skips over that stage and head straight to gross, in heavy need of a shower sweat.

Bromance at its finest.
Arrowsmith Jul 20th 2011 4:29PM
Can we expect you two to give these kinds of comments on each others' articles from now on? Cause I'm loving it.

This really puts the Mage/Warlock rivalry to shame.

Oh snap!

You've been in those Somerville homes, those stairways are MURDER.

Spriests and locks seem to reign supreme on shannox due to multidotting. I did not know that rageface (and riplimb?) can trigger immolation traps...we'll have to be sure to kite them THROUGH those from now on!

We try to take the dogs down more or less at the same time. Shannox puts some sort of debuff on the tanks and it can stack. My guild has me on Riplimb a good % of the time. The reason being, I can slow him with Mind Flay and delaying him from reaching Shannox allows the debuff to fall off. I have to very carefully watch my threat though since the tank cannot build threat on Riplimb when he's running around with the spear.

I think most people suggest taking out Rageface early on is that the reduction of random raid damage more than makes up for the 30% increase on the Shannox tank. But either way works as long as the specific raid group is comfortable with it.
Granite Jul 20th 2011 6:54PM
As an added note, if your group is having trouble having the stacks fall off the tanks, you can slow Riplimb for a bit with Mind Flay. He starts getting a buff that has him become slowed less, but if you just Mind Flay him a ton, it should be enough time for your tanks to get the stacks off.
mitch_b_666 Jul 20th 2011 7:47PM
Don't forget about Leap of Faith, as long as you dont pull riplimb's tank through riplimb, you're good to use it.
Z Jul 20th 2011 7:55PM
This.
If somehow a stack doesn't drop after a Hurl Spear on either tank, I make absolutely sure that on the next Hurl Spear ability if focus purely on constant MindFlaying Riplimb. It's almost a guaranteed stack reset. Sure, your dps might be a bit lower if your DoTs fall off, but your tank and healers will appreciate it.

My Tips as a Shadowpriest for Firelands, In Firelands and past Shannox.
1st tip - is actually for all Goblins not Just Shadowy ones! - If you've just crit Rageface during Face Rage, he will focus you for a few seconds of minor dmg. Run away (while Dotting) then Jump & then hit your 'Rocket Jump' to clear a trap without setting it off - Rageface will follow you and trigger a trap sealing himslef in and allow your healers to play catch up. If he has the 'Wary' Debuff he wont trigger a trap so just be careful.
2nd tip - Even if your not the target of 'Facerage' but are being attacked anyway - If your Dispersed, you have 6 seconds to locate a Crystal trap while not taking any dmg, look to skirt a crystal trap while to lure him into one thus trapping him to much cheering and applauding from your fellow raiders. Unless you get it wrong.
3rd tip - When Shannonx does his 'Hurl Spear' att., Mindflay Riplimb as much as possible, not only will it slow him on his journey too & from the spear, it also allows you to stack Shadow orbs for a nice 3ORB MB should Rageface 'Facerage' at the same time.
Not only will your tanks appreciate it but so will whoever you saved from Facerage.
Riplimb can only be slowed to 70% so your a better option than a Mage/Lock/Hunter/Shaman who are more likely to score a 30k hit/crit than you outside a 3ORB Special and your slow is consistant too whereas the other classes tend to be slows in blocks.
4th tip - Traps get everywhere but are easily avoidable - My tip is to always try to stand with a crystal trap between yourself & Rageface, stand close enough to smell it but not trigger it. Should you get Faceraged he will land in the trap and trigger it after he stuns you. Neat trick if Dispersions on CD. Glyph Dispersion also.
Multi-dotting can be fun but dont neglect your Priorities - Rageface under Facerage, Slow Riplimb when he's playing fetch, stay alive. Glyph Fade also. 15 sec fades is handy if your dotting & flaying Riplimb alot esp early as you can generate alot of aggro quickly that your tank cant taunt away.
Avengleyne Jul 20th 2011 8:49PM
Damn some of you beat to the Mindflay tip but..oh well :(
Forgot to add LoF also - we do it in last phase also by getting ahead of the tank kiting Shannox and LoFing just as he slams his spear into the ground.
Tyler Caraway Jul 21st 2011 7:33AM
I am going to have to strongly disagree with your points. It really is the best of strategies to merely kill Rageface outright instead of bringing both dogs low, then bringing Shannox low, then killing both dogs. In fact, it will actually result in -less- total damage over the course of the encounter to merely kill Rageface at the start than it would to leave him up.
At any point that you are DPSing the dogs, you absolutely do not want to put them into a Crystal Prison Trap; especially true for Rageface. You cannot attack any dog that's in these traps, which is going to waste your melee DPS and force your ranged DPS to switch targets. Rageface's damage outside of Face Rage is pitiful, which is how it is meant to be.
You should be dragging Rageface over the Immolation Traps anyway, which deal damage and increase the damage he takes by 40%. That's far more beneficial.
Further, you don't want to waste the Crystal Prison Traps on Rageface as your Riplimb tank will more than likely need them. While standing far away from Shannox and then moving in closer to Shannox right as the spear is thrown is a better method for dealing with dropping the debuffs, trapping the dog in a trap is similarly effective -- and apart of the heroic strategy.
Sharlatan Jul 21st 2011 8:26AM
Right, ignore ALL of these please.
As a tank the last thing I need is dps messing round with my dropping stacks.
I will handle riplimb and stack perfectly well without you messing up my timings with impromptu slows, leaps of faith and traps.
Also, Do NOT drop reageface in any crystal traps, these are to be used o Riplimb if I have trouble clearing stacks and for NOTHING else.
Dont over complicate it, burn down rageface, burn shannox and riplimb to just over 30%, kill riplimb, pop cd's and nuke shannox. Dont stand in traps. IF you can get rageface to kite over immolation traps, its a bonus.
The Lesser Evil Jul 21st 2011 10:27AM
Do you really need ALL the traps for Riplimb? Seriously, Shannox drops a whole load of these during the course of the fight. You'll hardly need fifteen of them.
The Lesser Evil Jul 21st 2011 3:32AM
There's a solid strategy to avoid the 'wring out a T-shirt' kind of sweating and get the 'sexy, glistening skin' kind instead: take off the T-shirt.
And take pictures.
...wait, where was I? RIGHT, SHANNOX!
I did him for the first time last night, and reading this before I did him would have been nice. I knew about the things he and his puppies did, but pretty much didn't have any idea how to take advantage of those things or really deal with them properly. I feel so informed.
Bakashinobi Jul 21st 2011 6:39PM
As a fellow Boston Shadowpriest, let me just say this:
I feel your pain.
As for rageface, I raid on 25 man and, by extension, have some teammate who are much better about that 15k crit (remember, 25 man) than I am. So I take to the habit of mindflaying rageface when he's face raging. Why? Because of the auto-crit. I've had my fiend come back 1 minute after use. And, if the face rage isn't over in a second or two, I nuke it and make a new friend.

DXE is still alive? I'm out of touch, it always was my fave. Goin' back..... now!
