World of Warcraft: "Wolfheart" novel description now available

Christie Golden's Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects, is currently on the shelves, chronicling Thrall's journey post-Cataclysm with the Earthen Ring and his counterpart Aggra, as well as the dragons and their quest to stay alive and allied during Deathwing's brutal return. With Wolfheart, it seems we're getting an Alliance leader's story opposed to that of Thrall, who was once the Horde's warchief.
World of Warcraft: Wolfheart is going to be available on Sept. 13, 2011. Hit the jump for the full description.
A slight movement in the opposite direction caught Eadrik's attention. The doe, acting only on her instincts and unable to meld those with common sense, had chosen an inopportune time to begin running again.[Thanks for the information, BlizzPlanet.]
The worgen lunged after her. Varian waited for a moment, then stepped from the tree. If Eadrik was here, the lord of Stormwind considered, then his master could not be far.
The bow once again ready, Varian moved in the direction from which Eadrik had come. The worgen hunted as a pack to a point. Being also men, those like Genn would seek their individual kills.
Varian retraced Eadrik's path, moving through the brush as readily as the worgen. His eyes constantly surveyed the vicinity and his ears and nose sought signs of his prey.
And at last he saw a worgen who could only be the Gilnean king. Genn flung himself after a massive boar with tusks so sharp and strong that, if the animal turned to face the worgen, Genn would truly risk death. At the moment, though, the boar thought only of flight.
Genn, however, was fast gaining. He ran sometimes on only his legs, but other times used his hands, too. With a litheness that Varian had not even seen from the much younger Eadrik, the veteran ruler closed on the boar.
Having measured the situation, Varian entered the fray. Although without the "benefit" of the curse, he moved with all the skill and pace of one who had survived more critical struggles than surely all the worgen combined. Yet, it was more than merely the reflexes of a former gladiator that served Varian now. Another force guided him, drove him in among the worgen as if he were one of their own and not simply a man. Others in the past had called him Lo'Gosh . . . and, at that moment, that name was more true of him than the one with which he had been born.

In the wake of the Cataclysm, conflict has engulfed every corner of Azeroth. Hungering for more resources amid the turmoil, the Horde has pressed into Ashenvale to feed its burgeoning war machine. There, acting warchief Garrosh Hellscream has employed a brutal new tactic to conquer the region and crush its night elf defenders, a move that will cripple the Alliance's power throughout the..
---
Unaware of the disaster brewing in Ashenvale, the night elves' legendary leaders, High Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind and Archdruid Malfurion Stormrage, conduct a summit near Darnassus in order to vote the proud worgen of Gilneas into the Alliance. However, resentment of Gilneas and its ruler, Genn Greymane, runs deep in Stormwind's King Varian Wrynn. His refusal to forgive Genn for closing his nation off from the rest of the world years ago endangers more than just the summit: it threatens to unravel the Alliance itself.
Varian's animosity is only one of many unsettling developments in Darnassus. An uneasiness creeps over the once-immortal night elves as the first of them fall victim to the infirmities of age. While they cope with their mortality, tensions flare over the reintroduction of the Highborne, formerly the highest caste of night elf nobility, into their society. Many night elves are unable to pardon the Highborne for the destruction unleashed on Azeroth millennia ago by their reckless use of magic.
When a murdered Highborne is discovered on the outskirts of Darnassus, Malfurion and Tyrande move to stop further bloodshed and unrest by appointing one of the night elves' most cunning and skilled agents to find the killer: the renowned warden Maiev Shadowsong. Yet with all that is transpiring in Darnassus, the Alliance might be powerless to stop the relentless new warchief Garrosh from seizing the whole of Ashenvale.

I'll take Knaak over Candido any day. Cycle of Hatred was my least favorite book; Candido seemed to understand the Warcraft Universe less than Knaak does. He's also terrible at coming up with names. Joq, Jalod, and Rych made me wince every time they showed up.
AudreyR Jul 21st 2011 11:34PM
I agree with Matt. Thrall was very out of character. The whole sexism issue seemed very forced. And about the only real addition to lore was Aegwyn deciding to hang out with Jaina.
It was predictable, boring, and seemed to be a fairly awkward story.

Agree about "Cycle of Hatred". The book is full of clichés from start to finish, and followed always the same pattern: we meet a new character, either on orc or human side, who does something, goes home... - enter the sulphurous smell and it turns out he's a burning blade member. No variation! It was so bad it hurt reading it.
Blayze Jul 23rd 2011 8:22AM
Agreed. I actually stopped reading at that point--I didn't want to have my entire gender insulted with yet another case of "herp derp women are SOOOOO downtrodden."

Time for an Adderall sweetheart.
Murdertime Jul 21st 2011 9:57PM
Well, at least we know a bunch of Horde cartoons are going to be forced out of Ashenvale.
Boreddruid Jul 21st 2011 10:04PM
People, myself included, like Knaak's writing. Get over it.
Mathew McCurley Jul 21st 2011 10:11PM
Knaak it off, haters.
DonNochay Jul 21st 2011 11:12PM
Then get over the fact that people have different opinions and tastes.
Are you dumb, bro?
Harvoc Jul 21st 2011 11:29PM
@ DonNochay
Boreddruid didn't say that he didn't respect other's opinions on Knaak. All Boreddruid said was that he'd like it if other would respect his opinion's on Knaak instead of just screaming insults at Knaak and those who like Knaak. On a different note, you just seem to enjoy antagonizing people and twisting their words don't you? Every single time I read an article, I see one of your downvoted comments where you just are being an asshat to everyone in range.

Has he ever said ANYTHING that doesn't have something to do with looking down on others?
Has he ever even defended himself?
Why does he even post?

Don't have a problem with knaack myself. I've enjoyed his novels, but since this is something concerning varian, it's already a snoozefest. Varian is one of the most useless characters in wow lore.
Proffesor Orc Jul 21st 2011 10:26PM
I don't feel he's a useless character but I do agree his character could have been better developed.
I feel his background lore on how he became what his is today is too wide in scope and makes it difficult to relate to him.
razion Jul 21st 2011 11:27PM
This is honestly precisely why I would not like Knaak writing this novel--he just is not good at this sort of thing( fleshing out characters and getting to know them in general). He can't get in their heads as is-needed. Particularly when you're doing a story that revolves around one character. My two cents.
Dreyja Jul 21st 2011 11:58PM
Raizon sums up my worries exactly. I don't mind Knaak but he just does not do characters like Golden does - not even close. Seeing his name on this is another epic fail for fleshing out the Alliance leadership.
I am sad. Right now, I hate Varian and I don't see how Knaak can make him a more interesting or, for me, sympathetic character. Blargh.
Will I get it as SOON as I can on my kindle, yep, I sure will. :) It'll still be a fun, light read.
Brevalaer Jul 22nd 2011 5:19AM
I kind of like Varian. Then I read:
"Having measured the situation, Varian entered the fray... with all the skill and pace of one who had survived more critical struggles than surely all the worgen combined."
Yeah, rrright.
I'll think I'll pass on the book.
Anteia Jul 23rd 2011 1:57AM
@Brevalaer
That whole sections struck me as from Varian's point of view. In Varian's mind, the worgen (namely, Gilneans) have hid behind a wall and basically let the other humans rough it out for years. Varian is pretty arrogant and needs some humbling, but I wouldn't take that single sentence as a reason not to read the book. I'm also not saying Knaak is going to be amazing at characterizing things, though I'm looking forward to it. I loved Golden's fleshing out of characters in Arthas, but her characterizations in the pre-Cataclysm book made me back warily away from her work. I haven't read Knaak's more recent books, they just didn't interest me, but I may pick this one up because it covers several topics I'm curious about. Stormrage covered the Emerald Dream which doesn't particularly interest me personally, but also has always come across as convoluted to me no matter who was explaining it. This book seems like it'll be much more straight forward and much more in in the realm of the sort of story of "Day of the Dragon". Some politics, what looks like it'll be a fairly straight story without too much waving of fingers (Emerald Dream/Time Travel/too much Magic)...much more like Knaak's stronger books.
Kezren Jul 21st 2011 10:22PM
"Although without the "benefit" of the curse, he moved with all the skill and pace of one who had survived more critical struggles than surely all the worgen combined"
That one sentence is enough for me to not want to get the book. It shows exactly how Knaak writes. Varian Wrynn, one man, is somehow more capable than an entire race. A race who has been invaded first by feral Worgen and then by the Forsaken, I doubt that Wrynn "surely" is better than *all* the Worgen.
I bought Stormrage and had a hard time finishing it, I don't see myself getting this one.
Bryan Dare Jul 22nd 2011 1:26AM
Yeah, I had the same thought. He just doesn't seem to know how to write good main characters. His technique is to just always make them Mary Sues. *sigh*
Speaking of which, just picked up the Warcraft Archive today, so I guess it's finally time to hear the tale of Rhonin's great "raptor army."
