World of Warcraft: "Wolfheart" novel description now available

Christie Golden's Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects, is currently on the shelves, chronicling Thrall's journey post-Cataclysm with the Earthen Ring and his counterpart Aggra, as well as the dragons and their quest to stay alive and allied during Deathwing's brutal return. With Wolfheart, it seems we're getting an Alliance leader's story opposed to that of Thrall, who was once the Horde's warchief.
World of Warcraft: Wolfheart is going to be available on Sept. 13, 2011. Hit the jump for the full description.
A slight movement in the opposite direction caught Eadrik's attention. The doe, acting only on her instincts and unable to meld those with common sense, had chosen an inopportune time to begin running again.[Thanks for the information, BlizzPlanet.]
The worgen lunged after her. Varian waited for a moment, then stepped from the tree. If Eadrik was here, the lord of Stormwind considered, then his master could not be far.
The bow once again ready, Varian moved in the direction from which Eadrik had come. The worgen hunted as a pack to a point. Being also men, those like Genn would seek their individual kills.
Varian retraced Eadrik's path, moving through the brush as readily as the worgen. His eyes constantly surveyed the vicinity and his ears and nose sought signs of his prey.
And at last he saw a worgen who could only be the Gilnean king. Genn flung himself after a massive boar with tusks so sharp and strong that, if the animal turned to face the worgen, Genn would truly risk death. At the moment, though, the boar thought only of flight.
Genn, however, was fast gaining. He ran sometimes on only his legs, but other times used his hands, too. With a litheness that Varian had not even seen from the much younger Eadrik, the veteran ruler closed on the boar.
Having measured the situation, Varian entered the fray. Although without the "benefit" of the curse, he moved with all the skill and pace of one who had survived more critical struggles than surely all the worgen combined. Yet, it was more than merely the reflexes of a former gladiator that served Varian now. Another force guided him, drove him in among the worgen as if he were one of their own and not simply a man. Others in the past had called him Lo'Gosh . . . and, at that moment, that name was more true of him than the one with which he had been born.

In the wake of the Cataclysm, conflict has engulfed every corner of Azeroth. Hungering for more resources amid the turmoil, the Horde has pressed into Ashenvale to feed its burgeoning war machine. There, acting warchief Garrosh Hellscream has employed a brutal new tactic to conquer the region and crush its night elf defenders, a move that will cripple the Alliance's power throughout the..
---
Unaware of the disaster brewing in Ashenvale, the night elves' legendary leaders, High Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind and Archdruid Malfurion Stormrage, conduct a summit near Darnassus in order to vote the proud worgen of Gilneas into the Alliance. However, resentment of Gilneas and its ruler, Genn Greymane, runs deep in Stormwind's King Varian Wrynn. His refusal to forgive Genn for closing his nation off from the rest of the world years ago endangers more than just the summit: it threatens to unravel the Alliance itself.
Varian's animosity is only one of many unsettling developments in Darnassus. An uneasiness creeps over the once-immortal night elves as the first of them fall victim to the infirmities of age. While they cope with their mortality, tensions flare over the reintroduction of the Highborne, formerly the highest caste of night elf nobility, into their society. Many night elves are unable to pardon the Highborne for the destruction unleashed on Azeroth millennia ago by their reckless use of magic.
When a murdered Highborne is discovered on the outskirts of Darnassus, Malfurion and Tyrande move to stop further bloodshed and unrest by appointing one of the night elves' most cunning and skilled agents to find the killer: the renowned warden Maiev Shadowsong. Yet with all that is transpiring in Darnassus, the Alliance might be powerless to stop the relentless new warchief Garrosh from seizing the whole of Ashenvale.

He already did, under the pseudonym 'Richard Knaak'. They have a few of the same problems such as being episodic (knaak with scenes, martin with whole chapters) and superfluous description. At least Mr. Martin has interesting characters, doesn't mary-sue and doesn't reuse his character achetypes. I thought Martin's series was a snoozefest like most of what Knaak writes and both are similar (to me, at least) in terms of what made them snoozy. I'm surprised you like one but not the other. I guess this is where the adage 'Your mileage may vary' comes in, right? :D you'd probably find what I read horribly boring too, though. YMMV!

I think some forget that despite his flaws, Knaak has made a sizable contribution to lore. It's thanks to him that we have Aspects instead of the dragons we saw in earlier Warcraft titles.
He helped to shape how we view Night Elves, for better or worse.
Metzen was on board with these changes, but the current expansion would look nothing like it is, lorewise, had Knaak never gotten involved with the Warcraft brand.

It's easy to lose sight of what Knaak has contributed, that's true. He doesn't help himself much in interviews, though. He's not a very humble guy, and while you might say an author who has sold as many books as him doesn't need to be, it still rubs people the wrong way.

I somehow think that Blizzard would've still had the books written but they would've been by a different author. Rhonin would still likely exist though possibly by a different name. Either way there is no use worrying about something out of our control.

That my friend is a sort of chubby Deathwing smoking a hookah from the canceled Warcraft Adventures game. In that same game, Thrall fought Alexstrasza for some reason. I'm actually thankful Knaak took the lead on defining the Dragon Aspects' personalities.

In the foreword of The Warcraft Archive, Metzen related how the novels started. Knaak had approached him about this. Metzen, being a fan, excitedly agreed. The idea of having Warcraft novels written hadn't crossed his mind.
After some phone calls over lore discussions, Knaak had pitched his ideas for expanding the role and scope of dragons in lore. Metzen was on board with this and, together, created the aspects as we know them today.
The result was Day of the Dragon.
As you can see, novels were not really part of the business plan until Knaak got involved.
We have him to thank for such gems as Lord of the Clans and The Last Guardian, for knows how long it would have taken for the Warcraft imprint to get started or what Azeroth would have looked when it did.

This is like drinking Dr. Pepper with poison. A lot of good with a little bad that just kills it.
"follows the exploits of Varian Wyrnn, Genn Greymane, night elf leaders Malfurian Stormrage and Tyrande Whisperwind, and surprise guest Maiev Shadowsong. From the description, it appears the novel will focus on the tensions between Stormwind and Gilneas due to their tenuous new alliance, the Highborne's reintegration into night elven society, and the continued fight in Ashenvale against the surmounting Horde odds." that would be the Dr. Pepper. "Knaak" that would be the poison. It sounds like a good plot to work with so I hope he doesn't ruin it. No kobold armies please.

I've never read a book by Knaak, and now I don't ever need to. In the sample here I consistently had to re-read parts to figure out what person pronouns refer too. This wouldn't be so bad if there weren't so many unnecessary words. Simple is better and reads much smother. Knaak gets too cutesy, and loses most of his audience with parenthetical commas. The other issue I have is Varian has contracted floating head syndrome. I guess I have been luckily blessed with good editors in the past.
watspr02 Jul 22nd 2011 12:12AM
Yeah, I agree with the possibility of ruining Maiev.
Also why in the world would Maiev want anything to do with Tyrande and Malfurion? That's asking us to believe a crapton right from the top. The only thing she would want to do with Tyrande would be play the hello game with her weapons. Nothing else. The exert alone hits me as a let's toss every Alliance char in there who wasn't already mentioned in Stormrage or the Shattering.

For what it's worth, I think the best source of lore for the King of Stormwind is Gnomechewer's Varian. Varian. http://vimeo.com/11814173
Cuz, I mean, he does have a scar on his scar. 's like scar squared or some $#!^.
Kaphik Jul 22nd 2011 12:39AM
"Also why in the world would Maiev want anything to do with Tyrande and Malfurion?"
I don't think this can be stressed enough. Great point!

MAIEV! Maiev Maiev Maiev Maiev Maiev! Azeroth's Best Elf has returned to us! Rejoice, brothers and sisters! Rejoice, fellow Wardens! Rejoice, all you who have kept the faith! Justice shall be done at last! The guilty shall SUFFER!
... and if is guilty of mutilating my favourite character in WoW, then yeah, suffering will occur. Mostly mine. BUT MISERY LOVES COMPANY.
Maiev Maiev Maiev!
*happy bounce*

He'll have her poisoning/betraying, being arrested or killed before the end of the book, losing any chance for redemption and cementing her as a future raid boss, by chapter 12.
My D6 told me.
Arrohon Jul 22nd 2011 11:37AM
Of course. The leader of the Wardens not making an appearance in the Firelands suggests that she's either dead or captured again. It would be a lot like SI:7 involvement in the Twilight Highlands quests involving the Bastion of Twilight without Mathias Shaw.
Fletcher Jul 22nd 2011 12:47AM
Right now I'm just ecstatic that Maiev is *back* - and *not* as a raid boss!
But then I adore Maiev more than is reasonable.
Jaq Jul 22nd 2011 12:47AM
I'm not going to enter the Knaak debate, as the only one of his books I've read is Stormrage and I thought it was okay, but if I may indulge in some nerdish fanboyish-I'd kill to read a WoW novel by Dan Abnett. He generally knocks any tie-in stuff he writes out of the park. And yeah, Blizzard, you already had Graham McNeill write a Starcraft book, get him on a WoW one, stat!
Oreet Jul 22nd 2011 12:52AM
Knaack or not, who wants to read a boring old Alliance book?
SR Jul 22nd 2011 1:35AM
Well, at least it's an obvious troll.
I mean, look at his avatar.
razion Jul 22nd 2011 2:13AM
"Not that there's anything wrong with that".
