WoW Rookie: How to look up your character online

If you're anything like me, you like to take a moment here and there to check out your character online without actually logging into the game. Maybe you're on a break at work, just doing background research into gear, or otherwise just goofing off on a computer. Essentially, you'd like to look at your character without getting in the middle of the game.
The Armory was a common way to share information about your character with other people. All of your official forum posts link automatically to your Armory profile, and it's easy to post to a link to your Armory on unofficial forums and emails. Over its existence, the Armory has continued to become more powerful. It can help you find potential upgrades, find out where gear dropped, and more. Along the way, of course, the Armory also became more complicated.
While Blizzard is transitioning away from the classic Armory, most of the functionality still exists just fine on the Battle.net WoW site. Here's a walk-through of some basic things you can use the Battle.net Armory to do.
Searching for characters, guilds, and more
One of players' favorite things to do with the Armory is looking up characters, guilds, and arena teams.
To look up a character or other group, punch in the name of the character or other entity you want to see. The site will return results including:
- characters
- items
- guilds
- blog articles
- forum results
- arena teams
Full character profile
You can now see just about everything you see in the game through Battle.net as well. In fact, you can do things through the website that you cannot do in game -- but we'll get to that.
As soon as you pull up your character, you'll instantly see a screen that shows your character in a dramatic pose, along with the icons for the gear you're currently wearing. This screen shows your character's status at the time you last logged out. As a general rule, people wear their best stuff when logging out so that they can have as sweet-looking a profile as possible.

- Hover your mouse pointer over a piece of gear; you'll instantly see its stats, including where it comes from and how much a vendor will give you for it.
- Click on a piece of gear see a stand-alone picture of it and get links to Wowhead and Wowpedia.
- Browse a character's talents, glyphs, and even achievements.
There are two things you can do from the Battle.net site that you can't do in game, and both of these things are particularly awesome. If you hover your mouse over the lower left-hand corner, you'll see links to FigurePrints and PrintWarcraft.
By following these links to the respective sites, you'll be taken straight to the necessary order page to buy a poster or statue of your character. Going straight from Battle.net is a great way make sure you choose the right character for these services. While this functionality is a subtle bonus, this integration is pretty convenient.
Guild stuff
What can you see while you're looking at guild information?
- what gear your guild members have recently received and how they got that gear
- guild level and most recently earned perks
- guild members who've contributed the most guild XP this week
- guild achievements and roster
- scheduled guild events

I saved the progression check for last, because it is perhaps the most important part of the online tools. A common question for players -- newbies or veteran players alike -- is whether a character is "ready" for certain raids.
When you look up a specific character, a bar at the bottom shows you which raids are "optimal" and which are "trivial." This guide is a good way to gauge your character's ability to progress through content.
Of course, these suggestions aren't the end all, be all of whether your character belongs in a raid group. After all, a single character is just one out of 10 or 25 raid members, and skill does count for quite a lot. Nonetheless, given that this progression bar comes directly from Blizzard, I would recommend you take it as a meaningful gauge of where to put your effort in progressing through content.

It is worth mentioning that if you click on "Advance" view, located right above your character's item level in the upper right, you can bring up the "character audit" screen which will let you know if you are wearing any gear that can be enchanted or gem'ed but isn't currently (this audit takes into account special enchants/gems only available with your trade skills, for example missing Prismatic gems for Jewelcrafters, or ring enchants for Enchanters) as well as unfilled glyph slots, and armor that isn't your best type (e.x. leather or cloth for a hunter).

Wow...I actually didn't know this showed different things for different folks. I thought it just was showing the difference between "current" content and outdated content. Testing it out just now, though, I found that stuff you're probably not ready for will indeed be marked as "challenging." Of course, it's a bit of an understatement when it calls Firelands merely "challenging" for my 314 iLevel bank alt. :D

Also, I thought that was clever photoshopping until I decided to search the armory for "Example."
Congratulations, Example the hunter...you're famous!

I've been playing for 3 years and I always wondered about this.

That brings up a good point for me, personally. I was looking at the screenshot dickishly thinking to myself "hee hee, that guy hasn't killed Occu'thar yet," but when I loaded up my own character page (to get some horrible self-satisfaction from a green box in the BH section) I was surprised to find mine still yellow as well. I killed Occu'thar last week with my guild but for some reason it didn't count the kill (which... was... WAY easier on week two than it was on week one).
Yes, I'm a horrible person, but hey, where's my Occu'thar kill!?

It's not just you, don't worry - my Occu'thar kill isn't showing either, but our faceroll through BWD last night is. Probably just hasn't started updating yet?

If you know exactly who you want to look for, on any page, in the search bar, type in Name @ Server Name (i.e.: Example @ Proudmoore) and it'll go straight to that person's armory profile. It doesn't seem to work for guilds though, which is silly.

You can also type the address in your browser's address bar. The address format is [region].battle.net/wow/[language]/character/[servername]/[charactername]/ .
[region] = game region (us, eu, kr, cn)
[language] = language abbreviation (en, fr, de, es, and so on)
[servername] and [charactername] = server name and character name (not case-sensitive)
Example: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/shandris/owenq/ (an old character I no longer play)

Guild addresses follow a similar format: [region].battle.net/wow/[language]/guild/[servername]/[guildname]/ .
Again, server name and guild name are not case-sensitive.
Example: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/guild/zangarmarsh/it%20came%20from%20the%20blog/ (It came from the Blog, Zangarmarsh US)

Every time I visit my armory page, my character appears for a split second, then I just get a big blank black box in the middle of my gear. The same goes for trying to view anyone else's characters. Anyone have any clue wtf is going on? It's seriously kinda irritating...

I think you may need to update your flash player or internet browser--it's working fine for me, good luck!

If you're using a script-blocking addon (like NoScript), you may need to configure it to allow sctipts on battle.net.

I keep hearing about how Armory lets you find potential upgrades and yet I cannot figure it out. This article teased it again, but unless I missed it completely, didn't say how to do it.

Try WoWHeroes but a really good one is MAXDPS.com. It shows exactly what upgrades suit your spec, items are listed for dps rating so you can check if it is really and upgrade and also some item enhancement. WoWHeroes is great for item enhancement too.

It used to, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't anymore. Though the Mobile one still does so I don't know.
Avengleyne Jul 22nd 2011 6:17AM
I like to use Mr.Robot, it wont find every single upgrade but offer you BiS Gear listings for Pre-za/zg, Pre-Raid, t11& t12 while comparing your current gear.
It will optimize reforging/enchanting/gemming for you too based on whatever gear your wearing. Which is actually my favourite part.
Drakkenfyre Jul 22nd 2011 8:29AM
The recommended upgrades were usually a crappy list.
It didn't take into account your class. It just went for higher level stuff. Say you are a Mage, you hovered over your weapon, clicked the "Find and upgrade" button, and it would give you a list. You will see items with Stamina, and Intellect. And then you would start seeing things with Agility.
It was essentially just a list. Like going to Wowhead, searching for an item type, and putting in required level between your character's level and 20 levels higher.

Why exactly did Blizzard abandon the old armory? The new one is shittier in every way.
Jack Spicer Jul 22nd 2011 1:16AM
The fact that half the time I tried to use the old armory site it wouldn't load, wasn't available, or just simply didn't work would beg to differ with your assertion.

I'm quite surprised no one missed the obligatory Example music videó from this article. I mean, come on, he's a classic!
