The Queue: Artemis

My friend Emily is at Comic-Con this weekend, so I'm taking care of her 12-year-old cat, Artemis. You can't see it in the photo, but he's standing on top of my fridge, apparently warding off intruders with his fierce squeak and his Left Eye of Sauron (no, it's not a lighting trick; he has heterochromia). A true catgoyle.
ProffesorOrc asked:
Why doesn't blizzard release a massive, canon, lore encyclopedia? The only thing that's close are the old RPG books that came out years ago and Blizzard themselves said those were non-canon and shouldn't be used for serious lore reference.
I feel that we're only able to learn small amounts of lore from off-hand comments in quest texts and the rare Cdev forum posts. And the books can only address the lore to a certain degree without deviating from the main story.
I'm not asking for a book that would spoil future story lines but instead something that would give context to the many cultures seen in the game.
What I'm imagining is a book that I could open up, look up the entry on Arakkoa and find a 2-3 page info on them, describing their customs, leaders, famous historical stories and what not.
It would be pretty difficult to create a work like what you're describing, due to the fluid nature of the WoW story. Blizzard creates lore to fit gameplay, not the other way around, so any info you get is bound to change or be added to at some point, any characters subject to Old God corruption or retcons. And when Blizzard does attempt to publish lore, you run into issues like the RPG books, where the information contained therein may not even be accurate anymore when a new patch or expansion lands, if it was ever really accurate at all. Hell, Blizzard couldn't even keep the game manual updated to say that no, you can't play a dwarf mage (well, you can now...).
As cool as a nice hardcover encyclopedia of WoW lore would be, I really doubt it'll ever happen. WoW's lore is just too malleable, too ongoing.
Shepherd57 asked:
How many servers does one realm have? I think there is a server for Kalimdor, E Kindoms, Outland, and Northrend. I assume they have separate servers for instances, but do you know the break down? Is there a raid instance server and a dungeon server? Are there servers for each individual dungeon?
On any given realm, each continent has its own server. Then there's the server for instances and raids (which may be shared among several realms, since the battlegroups merged) and then a server for battlegrounds (again, which may be shared by several realms). Those are the only ones I'm aware of, though it's very possible that back end stuff like the auction house has its own little server, too.
Styopa asked:
I'm not super-clear on how the RAF works. We have 2 WoW accounts in existence. Is there some way that I could use these to get RAF benefits, or since we've had these 2 accounts since forever, are we basically not eligible? It'd be great being able to skip 40 levels of stuff I've seen many, many, many times.
In order to be eligible for Recruit-A-Friend bonuses, you either have to be the account that sends an invite for an RAF trial account or be the account created by that invite. Two old accounts can't take advantage of the bonuses together.
You could each send each other invites to start new accounts and take turns powerleveling each other's characters, though.
leitniear14 asked:
What language do the wounded Hyjal defenders speak? Because as a horde I can understand them when an alliance character heals them, and I assume the same goes the other way around, so what do they speak that both factions can understand?
It's implied that most every race can speak Common, hence the name. Opposing factions just tend not to do it around each other. It's a gameplay thing, not a lore thing.
Whiplashmtb asked:
Today I pre-ordered SWTOR and expect that I'll be giving up WoW to play it . I am a huge fan of WoWinsider and check it multiple times daily . Is there a website similar in format to Wowinsider for SWTOR that you know of?
(P.S. Even if I quit wow. I can't quit you wowinsider. =P )
Our sister site Massively should provide you with the coverage you desire.

I have a feeling SWTOR will have the same effect on me as DCUO (which I love). I'll buy it, play it nonstop for a month, then go back to WoW for a while, and around time in between patches when I get bored, I just buy another month of another MMO.

http://torwars.com is a great site all about SW:TOR.
Amaxe Jul 23rd 2011 3:33PM
I really want to try TOR, but I'm hoping the price comes down. I know the preorder prices I've seen are 59.99 for the normal set. I really hope that's just a placeholder number because i'm priced out of the game at that point.
KvanCetre Jul 23rd 2011 3:54PM
@Amaxe
No, those are the prices. All new "AAA" titles cost $60. PC games have finally caught up to console pricing. But you get a free month of gameplay...
Heck, even WoW was $50... and until about two years ago, $50 was the normal price for PC games.
jfofla Jul 23rd 2011 3:55PM
Amaxe, it will not come down.
Lucas is getting a nice cut of the gross, so prices must be high.
In fact, I am predicting they will advance the sub price point to $20 or $25 a month.
You would all pay that, and you know it.
Amaxe Jul 23rd 2011 8:25PM
Well, I guess I won't be going in until it gets older then. A pity, but I am not going to blow $60 for an unproven MMO... maybe if I get a windfall of unexpected money sure. But as it stands now, it would damage my budget too much.
Shit...
Amaxe Jul 23rd 2011 8:27PM
...and I'm pretty sure I paid less than $50 for WoW when i got in in 2006.
DarkWalker Jul 23rd 2011 10:05PM
I don't like the new $60 price, though that alone wouldn't keep me away. The two things holding me back are:
- No confirmation of subscription prices.
- The combination of the pre-order being currently unavailable to my country with the local Origin store having a localized banner saying they are available. I sincerely don't know what to expect; will pre-orders be available here? Is that banner an error?

Hmmmm WoW Insider its like a drug but ten times as addictive and 30 times as exhilarating
During the last few weeks of my hiatus from wow i religiously checked wow insider :)
cloudhopper013 Jul 23rd 2011 12:13PM
I haven't played WoW in days but I still follow the news and stuff religiously. O_o

I haven't played WoW in weeks, even months, but I still follow the news and stuff religiously. O_o
cloudhopper013 Jul 23rd 2011 12:14PM
Feck, double post. To clarify, the exact time I haven't played WoW is about five weeks. Not much, but I'm trying to just quit altogether (or at least until the next xpac or super exciting content patch). But no matter how hard I try I can't keep away from this site. >_

Haven't logged on for months; read every day. When I do log again I'm happy I'll be up to date with everything WoW: pop culture and meme included
mem0ryburn Jul 23rd 2011 1:15PM
I do this too. I'm the type of player who plays for two or three months then doesn't play for two or three but even when I'm not playing I keep up on the news and this is my go to site for that. Sometimes it's the news that brings me back to the game.
Tim Jul 23rd 2011 2:22PM
I havent played WoW since January but still come to WoWInsider every day. I dont read most of the patch notes or class articles but the Lore articles and occasional other articles make it worth it. Also I keep hoping there will be some breaking news that something in game changes and convinces me to come back but so far not yet
dkhar Jul 23rd 2011 2:37PM
Yea I haven't played WoW in months(cataclysm doesn't do it for me, and am very tired of the same classes that I have all but played out). I still come to wow.joystiq though to keep apprised of any new info regarding WoW. I have loved Warcraft since the 1st game, love the books(well most of them), and the fact that they care about the lore(in most aspects). I continue to come here in the hopes that one day Blizz will put something in the game that I would be very interested in playing, doesn't necessarily have to be a new class, but at this point something that we all know about, and loved from the other games put into this game would make me play it again. Until then, I will probably join the masses that go to SWTOR. But I will still frequent this site, with breathed hope for something new (i.e. class).

I took a year break from WoW but have checked wow insider atleast 3 or 4 times a week during that hiatus. KYL will always keep me around.
