Shifting Perspectives: Gearing a bear druid in patch 4.2

Mmmm. Fresh
Stat priority for bears in patch 4.2 remains armor, stamina, agility, mastery, crit, expertise, hit, and haste. Rather than rehash territory we've already covered in our first set of bear gear guides for Cataclysm, the lowest piece I'm going to list in each slot is the best available piece from 5-mans, reputation, or the new Molten Front vendors. If you're starting from absolutely nothing and need some ilevel 333/346 gear to tide you over, I would recommend the previous bear guides. Otherwise, your goal should be to get to at least the lowest piece in each slot on this list.
As always, I'm bypassing PVP gear because so much itemization is wasted on resilience. However, if you want to use it and you've got a better piece than would otherwise be available from PVE, knock yourself out. This week, we'll cover the helm through boot slots, and next week, we'll tackle rings, trinkets, weapons, and relics.

- ilevel 333 Pre-heroic blues and honored reputation blues
- ilevel 346 Heroic blues and revered reputation blues
- ilevel 353 Epics from the Zandalari 5-man heroics
- ilevel 359 Normal tier 11 raid epics and exalted reputation epics
- ilevel 365 Molten Front epic rewards
- ilevel 372 Heroic tier 11 raid epics
- ilevel 378 Normal tier 12 raid epics
- ilevel 391 Heroic tier 12 raid epics
If you have a piece sitting around that's not listed here, just check the ilevel and compare it against the list to see where it'll fall.
Helm
Enchant Arcanum of the Earthen Ring (requires Earthen Ring revered)
- Obsidian Arborweave Headpiece (heroic) Tier 12 helm; token dropped by Ragnaros
- Hood of Rampant Disdain (heroic) Rhyolith
- Stormrider's Headpiece (heroic) Tier 11 helm; token dropped by Cho'gall. The normal version of this isn't as good as Tsanga's (below), but the heroic beats it. However, if you want the four-piece tier bonus, the helm is usually kept while the shoulders are swapped for Poison Protocol Spaulders
- Tsanga's Helm Bastion of Twilight BOE and the best normal helm before tier 12
- Membrane of C'Thun (heroic) Cho'gall (the heroic beats Tsanga's, above)
- Agile Bio-Optic Killshades Engineer-only BOP
- The Savager's Mask Halazzi, Zul'Aman
- Choker of the Vanquished Lord (heroic) Ragnaros
- Necklace of Smoke Signals (upgrade) 1,250 valor points; can be upgraded with a Crystallized Firestone, becoming ilevel 391
- Necklace of Strife (heroic) Valiona/Theralion
- Don Rodrigo's Fabulous Necklace BOE drop from upper-level Cataclysm zones and heroics
- Amulet of the Watcher Bloodlord Mandokir, Zul'Gurub
Enchant Greater Inscription of Unbreakable Quartz or Greater Inscription of Shattered Crystal (requires Therazane exalted)
- Obsidian Arborweave Spaulders (heroic) Tier 12 shoulders; token dropped by Majordomo Staghelm
- Shoulderpads of the Forgotten Gate (heroic) Baleroc
- Poison Protocol Pauldrons (heroic) Magmatron
- Stormrider's Spaulders (heroic) Tier 11 shoulders
- Tusked Shoulderpads Daakara, Zul'Aman
Enchant Enchant Cloak - Protection or Enchant Cloak - Major Agility
- Dreadfire Drape (heroic) Rhyolith
- Sleek Flamewrath Cloak Requires Avengers of Hyjal friendly
- Cloak of Biting Chill (heroic) Maloriak; normal version isn't as good as the Mantle of Doubt below, so use only if you have the ilevel 372 version
- Mantle of Doubt Quest reward from Elemental Bonds -- The Vow
- Dory's Finery BOE drop by upper-level Cataclysm zones and heroics
- Viewless Wings 1,250 justice points
- Recovered Cloak of Frostheim Second timed chest in Zul'Aman (Oh, Frostheim -- why must your cloak contain haste?)
Enchant Enchant Chest - Greater Stamina or Enchant Chest - Peerless Stats
- Breastplate of the Incendiary Soul (heroic) Baleroc
- Obsidian Arborweave Raiment (heroic) 2,200 valor points; the normal version can be upgraded with a token dropped by Alysrazor
- Sark of the Unwatched (heroic) Atramedes
- Morrie's Waywalker Wrap BOE world drop from upper-level Cataclysm zones and heroics
- Stormrider's Raiment (heroic) Tier 11 chest; if you're restricted to the normal version, the Assassin's Chestplate below is better
- Assassin's Chestplate Leatherworking BOE
- Shadowtooth Trollskin Breastplate Hex Lord Malacrass, Zul'Aman
This is still a problem slot. You may get an excellent pair of bracers off Alysrazor. Then again, you might not.
Enchant Enchant Bracer - Agility or Enchant Bracers - Major Stamina
- Flickering Wristbands (heroic) Alysrazor. In general I've tried to avoid the drops with random stats just because I find them rather annoying, but this is your only shot at bracers with mastery on them in tier 12
- Flamebinder Bracers 1,250 valor points; whether the random Alysrazor drop is better than these is up to chance
- Parasitic Bands (heroic) Magmaw
- Amani'shi Bracers Jan'alai, Zul'Aman
In annoying contrast to the bracer slot, we are still spoiled for choice with gloves.
Enchant Glove Reinforcements, Heavy Savage Armor Kit, Enchant Gloves - Greater Mastery, Enchant Gloves - Major Agility
- Gloves of Dissolving Smoke (heroic) Shannox
- Clutches of Evil Leatherworking BOE
- Obsidian Arborweave Grips (heroic) 1,650 valor points or dropped by Occu'thar, Baradin Hold; heroic version can be upgraded with a token dropped by Baleroc, but don't bother -- unless you can get the heroic version, the leatherworking BOE and the Shannox drop are both better
- Aviana's Grips Molten Front vendor Varlan Highbough (after finishing Calling the Ancients)
- Double Attack Handguards (heroic) Chimaeron. Again, the heroic version of both this and the tier 11 gloves below will beat Aviana's
- Stormrider's Grips (heroic) Tier 11 gloves
- Stormbolt Gloves (Alliance) or Liar's Handwraps (Horde) Available at exalted with the Wildhammer or Dragonmaw Clan, respectively
- Knotted Handwraps BOE trash drop in Zul'Aman and Zul'Gurub
Enchant Ebonsteel Belt Buckle
- Riplimb's Lost Collar (upgrade) BOE Firelands trash drop; can be upgraded with a Crystallized Firestone
- Belt of the Fallen Brood Sinestra; best in slot, unless you can upgrade Riplimb's
- Flamebinding Girdle Requires Avengers of Hyjal honored reputation
- Dispersing Belt (heroic) Twilight Ascendant Council
- Belt of Nefarious Whispers Leatherworking BOE; better than Dispersing unless you've got the heroic version
- Belt of a Thousand Gaping Mouths World boss Akma'hat
- Belt of Slithering Serpents High Priest Arlokk, Zul'Gurub
Enchant Charscale Leg Armor
- Obsidian Arborweave Leggings (heroic) Tier 12 legs; 2,200 valor points or dropped by Occu'thar in Baradin Hold; heroic version can be upgraded with a token dropped by Shannox
- Cinderweb Leggings (heroic) Beth'tilac
- Stormrider's Legguards (heroic) Tier 11 legs
- Aberration's Leggings (heroic) Maloriak
- Leggings of Dancing Blades Third chest in Zul'Aman timed run
Enchant Earthen Vitality or Assassin's Step; as a tank, you really do need a boot enchant with increased run speed
- Sandals of Leaping Coals (heroic) Majordomo Staghelm
- Treads of the Craft Leatherworking BOE
- Storm Rider's Boots (heroic) Halfus Wyrmbreaker
- Treads of Fleeting Joy 1,650 justice points
- Fasc's Preserved Boots Gri'lek, Zul'Gurub; all hail Fasc!
Shifting Perspectives helps you gear your bear druid at 85, tempts you with weapons, trinkets and relics for bears, then shows you what to do with it all in Feral Druid Tanking 101. We'll also help you gear your resto druid.

You don't go into weapons here, but the BS crafting scythe is a good 15K investment. Most importantly it looks SO BADASS. I won't be upgrading it to anything but the fire kitty staff.

I disagree with you not including pvp gear.
Notably, a lot of the leather arena gear is better than the non-heroic T12 pieces, even with the wasted itemization of resilience. They are 6 ilvl higher and that extra itemization of armor, stamina, and agility just ends up being more valuable than having a 2nd useful secondary stat. Wearing 2 pieces gets you an extra chunk and agility and wearing 4 pieces gets you even more agility and +15% movement speed in bear/cat form while outside; and all of current raid tier is outside. If you don't have access to heroic-T11 helm/shoulders, you should probably be doing arena for the pvp shoulders and helm. Also the reduced cost interrupts from the gloves are a very convenient bonus for any interrupt fights.

Thanks Allison! Great guide.

Should note that 4pc is worth using and getting, so the Tier chest would take place over the offset.

Regarding PvP gear.
PvP gear of the same Tier (ie, 6 iLvLs higher) is NOT better than PvE gear. The only case where is is not true is if you are comparing a Hit/Haste PvE to a Mastery PvP. However the only one of those that can exist this tier is the rep belt, whih you replace with Riplimb's anyway.
The primary (Agility, Armor, Stamina) stat gain does not compensate for the loss of the 2nd Secondary stat. I've already done comparisons to prove this, and it only becomes more true as the incoming damage increases (ie, as we move along in tiers of progression). Reduced interrupt cost is useless as there are 0 interrupt fights in this tier.

Well, the pvp gear may or may not be better than stuff 6 ilvls below it, but it is certainly better than dungeon gear. Not including it is silly and is really the "easier path" rather then the path of "most usefulness" from the writer.
I would encourage Allison to take the time to include the pvp gear in her analysis. After all, it may take us months to get some of the gear listed here and meanwhile we could continue wearing our old gear which was long ago outpaced by the new pvp gear sitting in our bags (arena gear is fairly quick and easy to get).
Not including it in the list, makes this list incomplete and much less useful.
Aymuhdroowud Jul 26th 2011 3:44PM
@Allison I've said it before and I'll say it again, you are probably the best writer on wow insider's staff. That being said, the t11 helm drops off Nef.

Going from a 353 or a 359 PvE piece to a 371 (honor) or 384 (conquest) piece is virtually always a substantial upgrade and should be considered. The armor, agi, and stamina inflation on the higher ilvl pieces substantially outweighs the lost itemization to resilience.

I don't really agree on slacking on hit/expertise. If you drop those too low, you'll get blocked/parried/miss a LOT - making mastery not a very good stat (as you need to hit/crit to even get a chance to get the bubble to go up).
I currently run with 7.X% hit and around 19 expertise. This has helped a TON with aggro and mitigation...and I'm still running 190K raid buffed and 34% dodge raid buffed.
Just my opinion of course...feel free to flame away
Willow Jul 27th 2011 6:35AM
Hit rating has no effect on savage defence procs, but expertise does. Increasing hit rating just increases the number of normal hits, it does not increase the number of crits.
Basically to use tabletop mechanics, roll a d100, 0 to crit rating is a crit, crit rating to hit chance is a regular hit, hit chance to 100 is a miss. Increasing hit rating just means less misses not more crits.
mackejn Jul 27th 2011 8:34AM
I'm fairly certain hit has the same effect on SD as exp does, just less of it. WoW doesn't work on a single roll system, so your analogy is flawed at best. The major advantage of exp till soft cap is that it reduces parry AND dodge, as opposed to hit which just reducing misses. It also has a lower cap for us since we mostly only care about yellow attacks. The value of exp has nothing to do with hit not increasing SD uptime. Still hut overall is a lot less valuable than crit or mastery till you get extreme levels of crit.
Also, you have more mitigation from this setup, but you'll also end up taking slightly more damage due to having less avoidance. The nice trade off if extra dps, which is really nice in 5/10 man content. It also helps mitigate some of the streakiness by relying on SD procs rather than more dodges. AND it let's you go kitty for more damage if you spec right and gem/enchant agi primarily.

Putting stamina ahead of agility in this tier is kind of questionable. EJ people have had back and forth arguments about it, but Reesi and the Inc bear folks find Agi to be superior assuming you've hit enough up to make you healers happy. Largely because we get so much more benefit out of that one stat. The other benefit is you have a kitty set ready to go with some clever reforging. You really can go just about either way on priority. It's really more of a case of pick one and run with it. We have more flexibility with gearing this tier than we have had for a while. Overall though good article. I appreciate having a list of gear to watch out for that's easy to sort. Thanks for the awesome article.
Japith Jul 26th 2011 4:39PM
Agreed. Don't go for any more stam than what is on your gear. I gem for Agi and reforge dodge / EXP, and that combo has worked well in FL raids. Now I just need more Mastery gear! It seems that almost everything that I get my paws on has haste which is such a waste! Will be good for kitty, I suppose.

I don't really like organizing the list around Heroic items. Most likely, anyone looking for a list at this point can't do Heroics, so it seems extraneous to be tossing all the heroic gear in there. Then again, people are into the Heroic level faster this tier than last, so maybe. Either way, I feel a cleaner list is to do normal gear. Ah well. Thanks anyway, Allison. :)
Wellsee Jul 27th 2011 12:48AM
I'd go further than that - separate normal versus heroic gear. Right now you can't tell how heroic XX measures against normal AA. By these lists, normal and heroic gear are the same rank.
Jack Spicer Jul 26th 2011 6:11PM
My problem gearing my bear is I get confused where enchants are concerned. Should I be going for the +Agility enchants (it is my primary stat), or the +Stamina/Dodge enchants?
I don't raid on my bear, this is only for 5-man.
Japith Jul 26th 2011 6:56PM
For gemming, I'd suggest pure Agi +40 in red slots, Agi/Mastery Or Agi/Dodge in yellow, Agi/Stam in purple.
35 agi on boots is a good one. 50 agi on bracers (if you can afford it, otherwise get 50 dodge), 250 armor on cloak, +15 or +20 to all stats on chest (some would argue for the pure stam enchant, but again, you're getting Agi on the stats buff). 130 Agi for your weapon enchant is very nice. I would suggest 50 or 65 Mastery for gloves (price).
Reforge all haste to Dodge, or a bit of expertise.
So far, this style of play has worked very well for me.
mackejn Jul 26th 2011 8:39PM
That's the beauty of bear design/gearing this tier. Neither is really a wrong answer. Both have advantages. Pick a strategy and run with it. Just don't go half and half.
joelafrite84 Jul 26th 2011 9:19PM
Go for Agility. Maybe have a spare Stam trinket that you can equip for a particular fight just in case, but you shouldn't even need it. I've ran and still run a lot of 5-man and survivability is seldom a problem. Keeping aggro over stoopid DPS that refuse to wait 3 seconds to let you build up some threat often is.
Savio Jul 26th 2011 6:36PM
Pls start including pvp gear in your list. It is better than much of the gear you listed. Even though a lot of itemization is wasted on resilience, it is higher ilvl than the equivalent pve gear it will still have:
More armor, more stamina, more agility, and more dodge (reforged on). It will have less of the other stats (the less important ones).
It is also very easy to get. So it would be so much more helpful to us if you would include it in your analysis.
That would make this article much much more valuable to me at least (and I bet there are many others like me who would agree).
