The Queue: Lore and the order of the novels

I love lore questions; they're always fun to research and write answers too. I also like bugging people who know more about lore than I do, like Mat, Matt, and Anne. It's a good time.
In fact, let's start off with a lore question today -- namely, where to go for more information and the chronological order of the books.
Levi asked:
I've always loved the Warcraft series and one of my favorite things is the lore, however, i've never read any of the books. I've decided to amend this travesty and start reading them but I want to read them in chronological order, just for the heck of it I guess. So my question is:
What is the chronological order of all the Warcraft novels?
This list of Warcraft fiction, written in 2009, is the latest I could find. I'm going to have Anne or Rossi update it this week, though, so keep an eye out for a new post (which will include the latest Cataclysm books and other publications).
I also highly recommend our lore guide. We've had some seriously good writers over the years contribute to our library, and we've been making a push in the last year or so to update it. You can also check out our Lore 101 article from 2010 to get a bit more directed info, as well.
Daffy asked:
I've noticed recently, that you can cast on PVP flagged person e.g. 'Power Word:Fortitude' and even 'Power Word:Shield' without flagging yourself. I can undestand that buffing won't flag you, but PW:Shield?
I'm guessing it's a bug. Unless my memory is way off, it's supposed to flag you.
Redwinger asked:
Has Bliz ever said why hunters can tame some animals but not others?
Not really, but the reason is it just can't have everything be tameable. Think of all the issues that would arise with graphical clipping, pet programming, etc. It'd be a mess, given all the thousands of creatures in WoW.
Blizzard has said numerous times, however, that it's quite interested in increasing the number of pets available for hunters. And in my opinion, Cataclysm has done a good job of this.
Lokatarar asked:
Is there a WoW Insider meetup this year?
Yup! We're going to have one. We're still planning out the details (we like the details; they're what makes our meetups so fracken amazing). Expect to see something in the next month.

"I'm guessing it's a bug. Unless my memory is way off, it's supposed to flag you."
I would assume this only applies if the flagged target is currently engaged in PVP combat.

Nope, I have made the "mistake" before of being on a lowbie toon and throwing a buff or hot on a pvp-flagged character, then hearing that thump sound that means suddenly I AM now flagged, while in the Stormwind Trade District. I haven't seen this happen lately (yes, now I do it on purpose) so I agree it's probably a bug.

Heck, I get flagged for the jewelcrafter daily where you put the sparkle dust on someone. If they're flagged, I get flagged too.
Noyou Jul 26th 2011 7:00PM
Yes. All buffs are supposed to flag. That's not the question. The question is - is it a bug or something new. I haven't seen it listed as either so until we have hard confirmation it's just a guess. If it was a bug I would think healing a flagged player wouldn't flag you either but that does. I hope it's not a bug- just buffing someone shouldn't flag you. So I hope it's something they changed.

Adam, your response to Redwinger's question would make sense if he was talking about all the different pet types. But what if Redwinger was asking about pet skins of already tamable families. How would you explain that?
loop_not_defined Jul 26th 2011 11:08AM
He elaborated further, making it pretty clear he meant families, not skins:
"Has Bliz ever said why hunters can tame some animals but not others? We can get crocs, but not basilisks or dimetrodons which are basically the same models with different skins, most birds but not the pterrodax, no rams, deer, etc, and only the cobra-type snakes, but not the others, and I want a griffin! You'd think that if we could tame a bear, a ram, which is a mount and therefore tamable, would be easy."

I'm still enjoying the mental image of all the giraffical clipping if hunters could have ANY animal as a pet.
I don't wanna grow up, 'cause if I did, I couldn't be a ToysRUs kid!
And picturing giraffe fights is awesome.

No, I wanted to know why a hunter cant tame pterrodax, rams, deer, etc. Most of the beasts are tamable anyway, I don't see how it would cause programming issues to have the few that you can't tame be tamable. Rams, mammoths, deer, griffins, hippogrifs, wyvern, dimetrodons, basilisks, and pterrodax are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head, other than completely aquatic animals like sharks, eels, and fish. The last 3 could fall under the same families as crocs and birds of prey, respectively. Rams could be similar to rhinos, only smaller. Mammoths could do something with their trunks to immobilize enemies. Deer could have a bleed effect. Grifs, hippogrifs, and wyverns could be the same family with the same attacks.

Still trying to figure out if deer are ferocious, tenacious, or cunning... *cough*
MattKrotzer Jul 26th 2011 11:59AM
Well, now you're talking about coding in new attacks and animations that don't currently exist. That's a pretty extensive amount of work. And that's why Blizzard isn't doing it.
Wolfbeckett Jul 26th 2011 12:26PM
@loop
Depending on the time of year, a lot of deer can be QUITE ferocious.

Well, I don't know about deer in general, but I'd love a stag pet in the Tenacity classification! I'm not a big fan of the current Tenacity pet families visually, but I think a stag would be a pretty cool tank. ;)

I might play a hunter if I could have a Vorpal Bunny.

Hey Redwinger, might want to check out these 2 posts by Wain on Petopia if you haven't already: http://forums.wow-petopia.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=10346 and http://forums.wow-petopia.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4290. They deal with "families" that could be added and skins that could be added to existing "families" respectively.
Harvoc Jul 26th 2011 12:43PM
Also, I took Wain's info and turned it into a proposal to Blizzard about pet changes I'd like to see if they decide to make more changes to the pet system. It's located here: http://forums.wow-petopia.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13820&start=0.

If I could tame anything, it would be one of those bunnies. Or I would wait until October to get a Wild Wolpertinger :)

When would it be considered acceptable to discuss Twilight of the Aspects without revealing spoilers? Somebody mentioned and linked Chromatus in yesterday's Queue, for example.
VSUReaper Jul 26th 2011 11:17AM
I think another week, and then, if someone hasn't read it yet, then they either wont, or they are waiting to see what other people think.
The more I think about it, there is only 2 really big shockers from the book... so its not like they are missing that much in the long run.
MattKrotzer Jul 26th 2011 11:20AM
I prefer to call him Tiamat.
