The Daily Quest: What is that all about, anyway?
WoW Insider's on a Daily Quest to bring you interesting, informative, and entertaining WoW-related links from around the blogosphere.
I don't play Minecraft, although some people have been telling me I ought to play. I'm not sure I get what exactly it's all about -- and between that and general time constraints, I just haven't been interested in giving it a try. But man, when you see what people can do with the thing, it's kind of awe-inspiring, isn't it? Like the replication of Darnassus shown above. It's amazing how much detail you can get out of what look like virtual Lego bricks.
Today, we've got a random smattering of posts from around the blogosphere, including one involving Darnassus, lovely zone that it is.
Is there a story out there we ought to link or a blog we should be following? Just leave us a comment, and you may see it here tomorrow! Be sure to check out our WoW Resources Guide for more WoW-related sites.

the one and only appeal to minecraft is that its a lego bucket that never runs out of more legos.
thats it.

That's like saying all you do in WoW is kill mobs. you can do much more, more than I can write here. and that's without counting the new update coming soon with npc's and stuff.

You say that like a bottomless bucket of Legos would not be *freakin' awesome*.
Vitos Jul 27th 2011 5:13PM
Also, you don't step on them and your dog doesn't eat em!

A bottomless bucket of Legos is all fun and games until somebody knocks it over and suddenly it's legogeddon.

Gods, the time that must have taken to build...

Minecraft is what I left WoW for. But I still subscribe to all these WoW blogs.
I host my own server now. It's much more than endless Legos once you start playing with Bukkit Plugins. You can have PvP, roleplaying, economies, dungeons (real ones with bosses and loot). Because of the API the possibilities are nearly endless for this game...

I thought Minecraft was all about building large penis structures.
Enigma Jul 27th 2011 4:40PM
Why the Darnassus music?... had me confused for a moment.
Straz Jul 27th 2011 5:22PM
You mean Dalaran of course :p
Enigma Jul 27th 2011 5:25PM
DERP! Yes... wow... massive brainfart.

I'm likely the only person left with a computer who has zero interest in Minecraft. It looks amazingly boring and pointless to me. And yes, I did love legos as a kid but... doesn't do it for me inside my computer. ;)
That being said, some people make some amazing things.
DonNochay Jul 27th 2011 5:40PM
Actually, quite unlikely. I too have much disdain for it.
gewalt Jul 27th 2011 7:40PM
I tried it once cause my friends insisted that I do that. I dont want a sandbox full of legos. no appeal there
Straz Jul 27th 2011 5:37PM
I really wish they wouldn't publicize the Firelands trash thing so much :( I do it for fun, and probably would continue to do so even if there were no profit in it.

The allure of Minecraft is that you can build many great things. That, in the span of a single second, it'sssSSS all gone.
Othgan Jul 27th 2011 6:07PM
sssSSSSsssss
Creepers be creeping.
BOOM!

Considering how crap my 6-story treehouse looks (as I had to do it before the invention of tree-shears to get leaves) this gets all kinds of applause from me.
On what Minecraft's about: It started out as virtual 'LEGOs' with a few survival sim and monster bits, but the community basically shoved the creators aside and made THOUSANDS of mods to turn it into any and everything to suit their needs. Theme parks (the ride kind not the mmo kind), rpgs, survival horror, racers, sims, meta-programming environments, printers, music boxes, movies, amvs, puzzles, and 3D printing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CLfNIZ4LNo).

But.... I can get all of that elsewhere. I don't see a reason to do any of it in block-form. I see the novelty in it, but is there really anything else? Has anything come out of Minecraft that's actually innovative or new and not just a block-copy of something else, or the aforementioned "bottomless lego" stuff?
VioletArrows Jul 28th 2011 12:57PM
Well for me, I really enjoy the simplicity and customization of it. Over the past three years I've rented and played a bunch of games and only one I don't regret is Minecraft. I'm pretty much burnt out on gaming because it's either all about being 'hardcore' or 'casual', feature bloat in an effort to try and keep the corpse of some 'safe' AAA franchise from stinking (*cough*), 'killing' any competition and griefing their fanbase (which ALWAYS backfires), or seeing how much nickel and dime bullshit everyone can get away with with as little actual content as possible. I really don't care about or want to support any of that garbage anymore. I just want something simple. The fact I can add or subtract any features of the game I want is even better.
Do I want to play with blocks? Okay, I'll just play with blocks. Do I want something more complicated? I'll install a mod and remove it later. If I want to play with friends, I'll go to my online server. I can skin it to make it look like other games. I can PLAY other games. I can do this without bleeding my account out or dealing with all the pretty graphics (which at this point only give me a splitting migraine).
