Re: the shadow priest dots - I tried several add-ons to get fancy with watching DoTs and discovered that I was ignoring them all in the heat of battle. The nice, simple xperl "my debuffs big" option worked just fine without adding any extra clutter to my screen. It merely makes your own spells on the enemy bigger and at the front of his list of debuffs. Granted, shadow is my off-spec and I don't track multi-dotting with an add-on, so something more robust might be what you want.

Also, somewhat related - the add-on powerauras makes tracking empowered shadow and orbs super easy!

Also, small unobtrusive addons like omnicc and inline aura work. They are ON the button itself and tell you if its active, and if so, how much time is left.
