Breakfast Topic: What do you collect in game?
This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider's pages.
There are a lot of people who collect things in game. Pets and mounts are often favorites, although there are often other items that people covet. People still charge into Black Temple hoping that they'll get the elusive Warglaive that will complete their set. Some have been farming Molten Core since release looking for a binding to drop. Recipes are also sought-after. Dirge's Kickin' Chimaerok Chops remains the only epic cooking recipe in the game, and now limited edition copies have been seen selling on the AH for upwards of 20k; something tells me it's not for the 25 stamina well fed buff.
I collect shields. My main is a protection paladin, and I have a bag in my bank devoted to the shields that got me through my raiding career in style and safety. While my collection is not as extensive as Blockade's, who got a shield named after him during this tier, I do have 15 shields ranging from the Aegis of the Scarlet Commander, to Akmin-Kurai, Dominion's Shield. I only add a shield to my collection if I actually used it for an extended duration, so each shield has memories of dragons and liches held at bay in instances, from taking the Royal Crest of Lordaeron into Naxxramas, facing down Algalon with The Boreal Guard, striking down the Lich King with Neverending Winter, to stepping to Cataclysm raiding with the Elementium Earthguard. When a shield has done well for me, I don't cast it aside to some vendor when a superior shield is coughed up by a boss; I set it in a place of honor. I collect shields -- and more so than that, I collect memories.
What do you collect? Or do you hold only onto those things you need at this moment?

Besides the usual pets/mounts/tabards... I collect trinkets that 'do stuff'. Like the http://www.wowhead.com/item=14022 , http://www.wowhead.com/item=1973 , etc. etc...
I could really, REALLY use unlimited bank slots.

This. And anything that will turn me into something else. I have quite a few (my new fav is Leyara's locket) but I'm always on the lookout for more.
Speacking of which-I know of a trinket that turns you into a nightelf. It is sold by a vendor in Azshara but I can't think of the name or the vendor. Also, is it a horde only vendor?

RP gear.

For the longest time, I had 4 guild bank tabs full of grey-level armor sets. I wanted to make a business out of collecting and selling them, but the RP on my server has dried up a bit, and the interest in such things isn't what it was.

Books, scrolls, letters, tablets. Anything that can be read really. Usually not from players, unless it's particularly important, but anything from a quest or drop has to be mine.

as a hunter, i collect the bows that got me through the game. it's a personal choice really. i've only ever had two guns in my hunting career (one off of KT 25man and one from early cata content). so far my collection is two bags in my personal bank.

I actually thought about doing something like this, or at least bows with names/lore significance. Got any favorites you wanted to list (I only know of maybe a handful, so I'd love some direction!)?

I usually avoid guns, too. I have one currently, because an engineer friend made me the epic gun and woodchucker, and I couldn't really say no to it XD. I should have collected my bows, it would have been fun.

Oh collecting stuff from leveling is always cool, and trinkets, and world event stuff, and gold.

Pets, mounts, tabards, engineering recipes on my main. Other recipes as well on my alts, but if they sell well on AH I sell them instead.
Pretty dresses, nice armor sets and other clothing for my main. I don't RP, but I like her to be properly dressed for fishing, in town, for children's week (you can't take a child sightseeing in full armor!) and so on. My alts each have a pretty dress, a nice armor set, a pet and a title.
Achievements on my main.
I guess I collect alts as well. As of now I have 6 85s (including my main), one 78 and one 13. I'll eventually have one af each class.

Alts. I like that one. Working on the last 2 85s on my main server. I collect the usual: pets mounts rep tabards cooking recipes. In addition to that I am now collecting screenshots. I don't know how many I have but they are in the hundreds for sure. Perhaps someday I will put them on a site and display them ;)

I'm a recipe completionist. I don't care that a jewelcrafting pattern is BoP and has strength and stamina; my mage absolutely must have it.

Fireworks!! I collect any and all kinds of fireworks!! I have a whole bank page full of stacks of fireworks! Then on New Years or 4th of July I burn them up in Stormwind for a major celebration for all!

trivia items and titles.. that being said, as a massive altaholic its spread over a few toons...

I tend to collect the usual: mounts, pets, tabards if I have the room. I've also been slowly putting together all of my tier sets on my shaman, while I tend to collect staves and polearms on my druid. Dresses? You bet I have a few, I mean a girl's gotta feel pretty now and again. Fun trinkets? Funky fist weapons? Axes made of win? You bet, I got 'em. At this point in time nearly all of my characters could use a really nice sized walk in closet for their clothes, a giant chest for their trinkets, and a good sized storage room for their currently unused weaponry. I like to hoard it all. Sadly my bank and bag space doesn't approve of such hobby.
"I don't have room for that." ~ My shaman, forever and always. At least until they give us a better storage system.
Mortenebra Aug 1st 2011 8:42AM
Cool in-game items... old armor... obsolete quest items... Tabards... I collect them but it's not something I actively go, "Oh hey! I need that for my collection!" It's just one of those decisions I make at the vendor, deciding if I should make room for it or not.
But I think what I really go out of my way to hang onto are the letters sent along with pet and mount rewards. I felt this incredible rush of honor and prestige when I got a letter from Alexstrasza that detailed how she'd been keeping track of my adventures in various heroic dungeons throughout Northrend. I liked the tongue-in-cheek messages from Breanni, who apparently has more pets than she can handle! Those letters are kind of like flavor text on loot... It's not really integral to the lore but it gives a glimpse into the non-official sides of many NPCs.
babywhiz Aug 1st 2011 9:38AM
I used to do that, but now when you move the letter to your bank, it loses the sender info like it does when someone server xfers. I stopped keeping letters after that.
Shinae Aug 1st 2011 11:04AM
I love the letter that comes with your second jouster bird. The NPC talks about what a handful it's been since it was separated from its sibling.
"Please, just take him."

I collect the usual stuff, mounts, pets, tabards, achievments, etc. I also like stuff to do with fishing so I have a collection of fishing rods and a a collection of uncommon and rare fish, such as Ol' Crafty, Ironjaw, Bloated Trout, etc. I need more space in my bank!!
mibu.work1 Aug 1st 2011 8:52AM
I collect whatever took me the longest to gain. I collect the stories of questlines and the mementos I earned from them. This means that my hunter has rhok'delar, he has the insignia of the Mag'hari hero, and he has his tea with sugar.
