Huh? Is that just wishful thinking on your part? Because before today, I would have said "I'm glad something like this isn't going to be in Diablo 3."

Saying what you said is quite naive. Folks who are convinced that this is a test run for doing the same in WoW or a future Blizzard MMO are spot on. After all, no one has forgotten that Activision runs the show now, right?
