There are several modes of play in Minecraft, so the point is a little different depending on which mode you are playing. Most of the videos you see around are built in Creative Mode, which is basically an endless box of legos like others have said. The Survival mode, on the other hand, is much more interesting. Its basically a crafting system merged with a survival horror game. In Survival mode, nothing is handed to you - if you want something a stone pick, for instance, you have to go out and tear down the tree get the wood to make lumber to split into poles, then you combine the poles with some cobblestone to craft the pick. While the gathering of materials and the crafting of items is interesting in itself, you do all this in a world with a day night cycle, and when darkness falls, thats when the monsters start hunting you down. Spiders, Skeletons, and Zombies all want to rip you to little pieces, while the more original Creepers sneak up on you and explode, destroying terrain all around. The game can get really, REALLY tense, especially if you are caught outside or in a dark cave unprepared.
