Phat Loot Phriday: Mirrored Boots

Lolegolas nodded in agreement before taking another sip of tea. His hands were shaking visibly, and the tea threatened to slosh over the side. "We can ignore the reflective top and assume you won't be tucking your shoes under anyone's skirts."
"Mirrored Boots good for tanks," Throgg said, ignoring the jibe. "Very masterful. I didn't even need to loot them from a dead monster. Locally made by craftsmen."
Lolegolas started to agree but was interrupted by wracking coughs. He covered his mouth with a fist and spat flecks of blood. He waved away the orc. "It's nothing."
"Withdrawal," Throgg stated simply. "You shouldn't have done it." The orc crossed the room and laid a hand on the blood elf's shoulder. "Going to find ale house, bring back beer. We'll spend a few nights here, let you rest."
"I'll be fine," Lolegolas claimed, making motions to stand up.
"Rest quietly," Throgg said, "or I'll knock you to sleep. Lay down. I'll be right back."

"Rest quietly, or I'll knock you to sleep."
See, now that's a good friend, taking care as only an orc can: with violence if necessary. ^_^ Good to see the story with these guys is continuing, even if it's a little more low-key. But hey, they need the break...

Michael, the boots are really nice, but your writing is awesome. I wish I could continue with your story to see what happens next. Thanks, very inspiring.

Nothing gets past Throgg. Rest is also a good excuse for... quality time.
MusedMoose Aug 5th 2011 3:43PM
I was trying to imagine what an orc would think of as "quality time", and for some reason, the only thing I could think of was wrestling.
And you know what? It fits.

Ah poor Lolegolas - stuck on the old "Slow Boat to China" detox route. Stay strong, O Blonde One.
StClair Aug 5th 2011 4:27PM
It really does.
Let's hope that's not an Incurable Cough of Death(tm).
Also, I am disappointed that the Mirrored Boots aren't shinier.

(aaaaand that was supposed to go under MusedMoose. :p)

Good job turning this duo into Caramon and Raistlin...
Natsumi Aug 6th 2011 5:01AM
Pfff, can't be them, Raistlin was an evil prick in a red bathrobe. Lolegolas is a cheerful fellow in chainmail. Raistlin was a mage, Lolegolas is a hunter. Totally different.
Also, Caramon never threatened to belt Raistlin to sleep lol

Everyone seems to really love the PLP stories, but there was a time (in the far distant past) when Phat Loot Phriday was about Phat Loot. I love that this column entertains so many people so well, but I really think the site lost a very useful and informative article.
There's never enough comedy in the world, but there's even less good Warcraft analysis.
MusedMoose Aug 5th 2011 6:12PM
The thing is, though, even back in those days, the column only consisted of a joke or two about the item, a sentence or two about why it was good for which class/spec, and the items stats and where to get it. We still get all that - in this column, Throgg points out how the boots are good for tanking and have high mastery, and the stats and acquisition details are at the bottom.
So, really, the column hasn't lost any information. It's just gained an ongoing adventure story. ^_^

This is the kind of thing I'm talking about:
http://wow.joystiq.com/2010/01/22/phat-loot-phriday-cryptmaker/
What do ferals use? Agility polearms and staves of course. This article describes how this 2-hand strength mace, which screams DK, was considered to be BiS for cats by many people.
Regardless of what the article ever was, I think a discussion of gear would find a great niche here. There's no reason to get rid of the serial story everyone loves so much, just add to it. Most gear is pretty homogenized but weapon choice can be pretty tricky and there is a huge variety of very different trinkets to wade through.
MusedMoose Aug 5th 2011 6:50PM
After rereading that column, I have to say, you've got a really good point. There was more to the older PLP than I remembered. I don't think a gear discussion column would go unappreciated on this site - I know the individual class/spec columnists do gear rundowns from time to time, but something dedicated to the subject might be interesting.
RothKeahi Aug 5th 2011 9:48PM
I'm sure that if an item warrants extra discussion about it, as that mace did, then they would go into such detail about it.
pancakes Aug 5th 2011 10:28PM
Maybe if there was some more discussion of the actual weapon in the bottom part, after the Throgg & Lolegolas bit, because I'd hate to lose them.
That said, for this particular item, there's not really that much to discuss. They're very obviously good tank boots made by blacksmiths, learnt from a drop in firelands, all of which were covered in the article. My only suggestion would be to mention that they (like the other firelands patterns,) need living embers, which drop from firelands bosses, & so are pretty expensive.

I hope I'm not beating a dead horse, but I'm curious as to why my posts are getting downvoted. I'm pretty sure my original was misunderstood and perhaps not clear. The response in which MusedMoose said I made a good point after reading the article I linked gets voted up, yet the good point gets voted down.
The only response anyone has given has been to say that they don't want to lose the stories. I said that the stories should stay and the column should also provide some useful information. What part do people object to?

"We can ignore the reflective top and assume you won't be tucking your shoes under anyone's skirts."
Lolegolas forgets how many kilts there are in Azeroth.
Arrohon Aug 5th 2011 11:46PM
This article was pretty useful. Once my pally gets his metal dress I'll be sure to keep an eye on the feet of tanks. However; if I meet a nice spacegoat...

Its nice to have the detalied info on equips it was very informative but I prefer to have a story along with it.
