I have always found M&M's to be somewhere between unappealing and disgusting, depending on my mood. I have never understood their popularity.

M&Ms are made up mostly of chocolate - cocoa has a vast appeal for many people, perhaps even producing a certain neurotransmitter in the brain akin to the one produced when a person is in love.
M&Ms have a history. They were originally conceived as the perfect candy for soldiers since the outer coating prevents the chocolate from totally melting in one's hands, as is apt to happen in some of the extreme conditions faced by soldiers.
Skittles, on the other hand, are just chewy pieces of artificially-flavored sugar. I find them (and all other "fruit" candies, such as Starburst) thoroughly disgusting.

I remember hearing something about them changing the recipe recently, because chocolate is going up in price, so that they don't even contain real cocoa (just cocoa butter or something). Still, they do in a pinch.
