I think the main reason behind a pandaria expansion is the collective feeling of burning out most people got while doing cataclysm. For a company like Blizzard, that would be a wake-up call to change the pace or the direction of the game, and what better than to take it to an un-explored, kinda different place? =)

The problem with that reasoning is that Blizzard has likely been working on this next expansion since before Wrath ended. Will the collective loss of over 700k subs affect their encounter design and tuning philosophy for the next xpac? Probably. Is the entire concept of a Pandaren expansion a knee jerk reaction? Not at all.
