We'd like to keep the traditional setting of 5-player dungeons as 1 tank, 1 healer, and 3 DPS. The idea of just adding in NPCs to fill lacking roles is truly not a simple one, nor a route we'd want to take. Not only would this take a lot of design time for a less-than-desirable fix, it'd stand at odds with our philosophy on dungeons for small groups.
That said, you do raise some good points about offering challenging, rewarding content to players which doesn't rely solely on players waiting for a specific class role which is in high demand across the boards. In our minds, there's potentially something missing between daily quests and dungeons, from a content/progression perspective. To that end, we're exploring some options for the future.

Light on blues today but it sure was a testament of quality vs. quantity

Agreed. I'm pleased to see that Blizzard is looking at more options, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with. Some single-player challenges for decent rewards would be great.

Character Copies for the PTR just reset back to 4 within the past two hours.

Could you explain what this means, and what you think it signifies? Not everyone is into the PTR thing.
David Aug 10th 2011 11:09PM
It means the PTR is mere days from being released. Character Copies are generally wiped right before the PTR comes up so people can transfer characters over to the PTR again.
The reason it is wiped is during a single testing period you can only transfer 4 characters over, and 4 pre-made characters.

Seems to me that this mysterious new solo content could be the "something major" in 4.3, or a major thing added in the next expansion (which I will call Mists of Pandaria)
As for the PTR, right now it's just showing the bugfixes from 4.2A but something tells me we could be seeing 4.3 come within this month on the PTR.

As much as I hope you're right, it's hard to say. "Exploring options for the future" could mean anything from "We've got a whiteboard filled with ideas" to "We're testing some new things".

I for one am glad that Blizzard notices a lack and a need for solo progression. What I hope they do is an instanced setting where you enter as your desired role, and complete the challenges laid out before you. A dps would have to kill targets in a specific amount of time while working on avoiding damage and using their skills appropriately. A healer would have to obviously keep everyone healed, again while attempting to avoid taking damage and making sure they use their mana efficiently. A tank would have to establish and maintain aggro, and taunt at appropriate moments, making sure others aren't being smashed to death. This 'trial' instance could give players a way to learn dungeon encounters, and be basically a gear check for upcoming content. The rewards could be either JP or marks to spend on gear to help the individual for other instanced fighting.
What Blizzard will do is not this. Instead they will take the money we pay them and use it for more content that's canon rewritten, and more 30 day grinds for something everyone can obtain. Where's the reward for the individual?
