The Queue: I'm for Deathwing

I just wanted to let you all know that I'm on Team Deathwing. I hope he has great success in his quest to destroy Azeroth.
The twist ending to Cataclysm? Deathwing wins and we end up going to a new planet via a new portal, just like the Dark Portal.
That new world is Pandaria.
Bonethrower03 asked:
Do you think it was really more work to revamp Azeroth as opposed to creating a new world?
I asked a similar question to some Blizzard folks about a year ago.
In my conversations with them, yes, it really was. They basically had to go over every single inch of in-game land and fix holes, hidden areas, invisible walls, etc. And in doing all that, they couldn't change the basic outlay of the lands (except where they creatively wanted it because of my master Deathwing).
As one Blizzard employee put it to me, it's the difference between creating a new ability vs. trying to balance one that's been around for five years. Creating anew is easy; balancing is "f!@#ing difficult."
S asked:
Do you think Blizzard will rebalance the combat/stat numbers so the numbers don't get out of hand? Or should we expect players to have 1 million health, weapons with 3000 strength, and bosses with 1 billion health in a couple expansions?
It's possible Blizzard will do it in several years, yes. Numbers are only necessary to relate things to one another; so as long as that relation can happen quickly and easily, it won't be necessary to rebalance all the gear.
For example, it's easy to say that 400 is twice as big as 200 and that you really want that extra 200 points. But the difference between 600,000 and 650,000 isn't that big of a percentage -- would you sleep any better knowing you made $650k instead of $600k? I wouldn't -- yet that 50,000 points could really make a big difference depending on nonlinear game mechanics (remember, there's a lot of piecewise functions in WoW). At that point, the comparison is not easily made and there'd be a case for rebalancing. We're not there yet, though, and won't be for a very long time.
Also, I'd lay odds Blizzard has already studied this internally and has a cut-off point where it'd need to make this happen. It's just a matter of the psychoanalytical understanding of the number system and comparisons.
Professor Oak asked:
Have the editors ever considered using guest writers for the Queue, similar to Breakfast topics?
It wouldn't really work. To be completely honest, we need writers we trust to deliver well-founded opinions, correct facts, and verbose explanations. While guest writers can produce great content for other parts of the site (like Breakfast Topics), it's prohibitively difficult to find out if they can write a successful Queue.
I know what some of you are thinking -- what about folks who comment a lot? Yes, they would have a history of good discussions, but that doesn't equate to writing a 500- to 1,000-word feature.
That being said ... who knows? Maybe one day, we'll work something out with a few of you. Pandas look like they'll be coming into WoW, so anything can happen.
Tyler commented:
i would think the next expac would be 5 levels. and then the final one would be 10 levels. (possibly 90-100?)
We haven't heard the final word yet about the next expansion levels, so we don't really know. And I do agree with Mat in yesterday's Queue that we can expect to have not as quick a leveling and content burn.
I can say with absolute certitude that Blizzard does not intend to stop the game at level 100.
Shanie commented:
"The shaman is set in stone as per his abilities."
WE ARE PATIENT.
Okay, so I know this really isn't a question, and you're commenting on shaman being patient. But I have to retort with two words: DOT shock.
Drool asked:
Sometimes when I solo kill a level 85 Alliance scum I get 10 honor points, sometimes I only get 9. In BGs I sometimes get 2 or 3.... is there a mathematical formula to this?
Scum, huh? So you're either just extrapolating in your language here, or you're really one of those guys who takes PVP and things way too seriously. Either way, it's likely because of diminishing returns, having someone else do some damage to him, him being of a lesser level than you are, having NPCs do some damage to him while you are, etc... lots of potential reasons.

Are there any plans to update the guide for "The Insane"?
http://wow.joystiq.com/2009/04/09/the-overachiever-insane-in-the-membrane/
Haven't some of the tasks involved changed in two years? I know the the Shen'dralar rep is no longer included. Some parts of it would seem like they'd be easier now, but I haven't looked into it yet.
Thanks!

Audrey I'm pretty sure if you've been attempting that achievement you already FEEL LIKE YOUR TAKING CRAZY PILLS. Caps lock was necessary.

Overall I'd say it's easier nowadays in most respects. The Bloodsail Buccaneers rep is a bit diabolical if you're trying to grind it by killing the 4 or 5 NPCs in Faldir's Cove or farming Booty Bay Bruisers, but there's still at least one way of doing it that turns the entire rep grind into a 5 or 6 hour project.
The Darkmoon Faire is just long and very, very grindy. It's by far the longest of the bunch, but you're just making a bunch of decks so it's easy to get into a rhythm with the lower level decks and it's all a matter of dedication at that point.
Ravenholdt is only bad if you don't already have a spare rogue handy.

NOW he leaks the info he's been entrusted with. I approve.

Actually, I believe the answer to the last question (varying numbers of honor) is rounding.
I've noticed at times getting e.g. 524/525 exp from the same mobs, alternating with each kill.
I suspect that the game calculates things to a certain number of decimal points, rounds down, and shows you the amount you appeared to have gone up.
E.g. if I'm at 0, and I get 4.5, I will appear to be at 4, and it will say 4 exp. If I get another 4.5 exp, I'll go up to 9, and it'll say I got 5 exp.

I always thought it was depending on how many people got credit for the kill. For example:
If you kill someone with nobody around you get 20 honor, and if you kill someone with 9 other people around (in your party or raid group) you get 2 honor.
askii Aug 11th 2011 11:37AM
I used to see a lot of that when grinding rep on my human- the extra 10% rep would make for a lot of alternating rounding.
rhorle Aug 11th 2011 11:29AM
The game only displays certain things in whole numbers, but it still tracks and calculates with decimals. That is why humans when killing the same mob will see 4 rep, 4 rep, 5 rep, 4 rep, 4 rep, 5 rep.

The original question was asking why they sometimes get 9/10 honor and sometimes only get 2/3.
If you were consistently rewarded with 9/10/9/10 honor, it would be obvious that you get 9.5 honor per kill. But I've noticed sometimes I get 5, sometimes 10, sometimes 20, and sometimes I get .1, .2, .5, .9, etc...
That is why Mr. Holisky answered it was because of diminishing returns
Noyou Aug 11th 2011 11:35AM
I think it depends where and how too. If someone or an NPC chips in you get less. I would imagine kills in a BG or rated BG give more as well. As far as 20 honor for a kill- my question would be is this in a BG because if so that honor could be for a flag cap or another PvP objective. In TB I'm fairly sure you get honor for capping towers.
eel5pe Aug 11th 2011 11:58AM
I posted this yesterday, and maybe I'm wrong, but I can't find anything that contradicts me.
Diminishing returns for honor was removed a loooooong time ago (in 2.4!). I don't recall a patch ever adding it back in.
The OP is correct that minor fluctuations in honor received are likely due to rounding, and I would also throw the guild perk Honorable Mention in too- +5/10% just adds in all sorts of fun decimals.
I hypothesize that large fluctuations are probably due to the number of people around when you got the kill. If you world PvP, you'll notice that you get a sizable chunk of honor when you kill a guy one on one. By contrast, when you kill someone in a giant zerg in AV you get 1 or 2 honor points pretty consistently.

Two final points that are opinion, so I want to separate them from my previous post in case they become flame bait:
1) It's pretty funny that in the same queue where the author emphasizes "we need writers to deliver... correct facts" that the author gets a fact wrong. Sunwell was over 3 years ago, Adam! =)
(I would of course add that the authors of the queue overwhelmingly do an excellent job)
2) The way to test my theory? Go corpse camp someone... not that we condone such things here. Maybe find a willing player of the opposite faction. Kill him over and over and see if you get diminishing returns. Then add a few extra players into the mix and see if your honor gain changes.
Neothanos Aug 12th 2011 8:46PM
Plus the extra honor from guild perk can create some fractions pf honor too.

Congratulations, Hoilsky! You've made me laugh out loud.
Now I KNOW you're doing it on purpose. XD
Good Queue, today. Thanks, Adam-man.

I *hope* he's doing it on purpose. But if he keeps this up, he's eventually going to mangle your name into Ishmael or something.
