Gold Capped: How to make gold with enchanting

Enchanting is one of the biggest money-makers in the game. Most of that money is earned by selling scrolls, which are simply enchants saved on a vellum. I've written about selling these before, but it was a long time ago and the tools have changed considerably. Making gold with enchanting is surprisingly straightforward and involves three steps: getting mats, crafting scrolls, and posting them.
Let's start at the beginning
Which enchants do you sell? Assuming you're already 525, you'll definitely want to consider all the Cataclysm enchants. The ones used in leveling are almost always going to be cheaper than the mats, but the rest of them may be profitable, especially the ones that you have to buy off the vendor. It's probably worth investing in the new bracer enchants; however, bear in mind that these are somewhat rare BOE random drops that might cost you a fair bit.
Additionally, you might want to sell enchants that are appealing to people looking to enhance their BOA gear, as well as maybe Wrath of the Lich King enchants. Here's a master list put together by Valdron of The Consortium forums that will contain all the recipes generally found to be profitable, at least somewhere. The decision of which types of scrolls to make should be based on whether you have the time to accumulate all the needed recipes and whether you're willing and able to keep tabs on a completely different set of mats. Infinite Dust, for example, is going for 8g each on my realm these days, but there are apparently a few Wrath-era recipes that are still being used consistently. Agility to gloves is the only one I know best as a hunter, but there is a list of all the profitable enchants here that you can trawl for.
All the work you do before you start
Managing mats is probably the most time-consuming part of any crafting business, and enchanting is no exception. The more sets of enchants you're willing to craft, the more mats you have to manage.
You need to know whether you can make them out of something farmable, whether they're produced as a by-product of people leveling through specific content, or whether they're simply so rare that they're basically unfarmable. It's the most time-consuming and (to me, at least) least interesting part of crafting. That's why I limit myself to Cataclysm enchants; the mats are always on the auction house and happen to be a byproduct of jewelcrafting, another trade skill I happen to do a fair bit of.
You'll want to have a way of saving searches so you can check prices more efficiently. The default UI is still pretty much useless to us, so you'll need to use an addon. TradeSkillMaster now supports something like this as part of the Shopping module, although I haven't tested it yet. I still use Auctionator's borderline perfect saved lists and categories feature.
The easy part
Once you have your list and your supplies, the rest is pretty simple: Craft and sell your scrolls. While it's possible to use a wide variety of addons for this, the one that does everything you need is TSM. Configure it to only queue scrolls you want to sell and automatically list everything you've crafted. Once you have a basic idea about which of your scrolls sell the best, consider increasing the quantity you keep in the AH to better meet demand.
I find that it's worth running an extra cancel / relist / craft cycle on heavy raid nights or weekends, but that depends completely on your competition.
The extras
Other than making scrolls, you can make and sell Horde and Alliance mini-pets and disenchant cheaply sourced gear for mats. Those pets are occasional sellers, but now that Maelstrom Crystals are nowhere near as rare as they were in the beginning of the expansion, more people are finding them within their budget. If you're willing and able to do the cross-faction arbitrage needed to get the other faction's pet available in your AH, you can probably charge a fair bit more than the one that every other enchanter can make. Still, that's either risky or expensive, and it's always time-consuming.
As for disenchanting, most AH addons include some sort of filter that will let you buy gear that will disenchant into mats worth more than you paid. I don't use them, but I hear that this is still a viable strategy. More commonly, you can find times when some enchanting mats are worth more than the mats needed to make gear that disenchants into it. For example: While ore is expensive now on my realm, at one point, it was 20g a stack in any quantity you wanted. Heavenly Shards were 70g, and you could disenchant them from blue-quality armor made with blacksmithing.
If the price or ore, cloth, or leather goes low enough, you might be able to make gear to disenchant profitably.

One easy trick I've used is abyssal shatter. Blowing up 20-30g crystals for 5 essences or 10 dust is like manufacturing gold. I don't do it too often, but if someone dumps 100+ crystals it's easy money.
Other than that, the only things ever worth the price to make on my server are rare vanilla chants for heirlooms, the nice Cata bracer enchants, the raid quality weapon chants, and the pet.

The BC void shatter is also sometimes quite worth it, if you don't mind running MT a few times for the SSO rep on characters who weren't around for that time period.

Good to know! Dusting off my Enchanter and Jewlecrafter to get some mats! Been on a 2 month break and I need gold... lol

I make the most money off making agility scrolls for BoA weapons. The airs are a bit harder to farm, but it's worth it. I can also buy vicious wands with honor and DE them for 200g maelstrom crystals.
nieboh Aug 12th 2011 7:31PM
Your Maelstrom crystals are 200g? Wow. Ours are more like 80g now.
Smashbolt Aug 12th 2011 7:35PM
If your enchanting character is 85 and at least a semi-active raider, you can also farm reputation with the Avengers of Hyjal to Honored on the trash in Firelands. Even if you're not raiding, trash runs are still probably happening and you can get in on those for the rep. The rep vendor there sells epics that cost about 200g at Honored and unless they've changed it, they can be disenchanted into Maelstrom Crystals.
Unless your server prices are abnormally high and/or the supply is incredibly low, it's probably not the cheapest way to get Maelstrom Crystals. But if you have the rep already, and the prices are over 200g, the time required to "farm" them is negligible.

It's fairly time-consuming and only makes a few thousand gold a week, but yes, still 'viable'.

I wouldn't say that its time-consuming. I usually take 20 minutes out of each day and make around 4k a week, without needing a second profession or indeed without even moving. I use it not only for profit but to replenish my personal stores of mats as well.

Yeah making money off of enchanting this expansion has been really hit or miss. People on my server pretty consistently sell stuff for less than the price of the mats. You have to be really vigilant to see what's selling for a profit. Some nights I'll find a low supply and make a killing, most times it's barely worth the effort.

Can someone please tell me exactly what the gentleman in the pic is wearing? i want that outfit for my banker.
Glenn Aug 12th 2011 7:56PM
Dude, you read my mind, i know the hat is from one of the starter quests in Gilneas for the worgen but as for the rest of this Gentleman's attire i cannot account for it off the top of my head, so please if anyone has any idea of what all those items are specificly i would really appriciate that info too.
Thanks
Basil Berntsen Aug 12th 2011 8:16PM
That's the banker in stormwind :) I don't know that it's possible to outfit a toon like him...
hicks Aug 12th 2011 8:34PM
That's the Diamond-Studded Cane from the Dalaran fishing dailies, and the suit may be the Black Tuxedo Jacket and Pants from...Noblegarden, maybe? One of the holidays sells a pattern for a black suit.
Not sure if there's a craftable top hat.
Kole Aug 13th 2011 3:59AM
You can get close....as Hicks said he is holding a close facsimile to the Diamond Studded Cane. The clothes look similar to the Tuxedo Jacket and Pants, Dress shoes and Tuxedo shirt as well. The cape is the one item I can't replicate close enough so I usually go sans cape. The top hat from the Gilneas lowbie area and currently you can't wear a monocle and a top hat at the same time.

I make most of my gold selling the raw enchanting mats rather than the enchants themselves. I do have a brisk business selling low level enchants--like +3 int to weapon, agility to boots, stats to chest, etc. I guess I really like having a maxed enchanter for ME. I am always leveling an army of alts, and how nice to have all my gear ALWAYS enchanted the best it can be at minimal cost. I also sell a lot of wizard oils to folks who don't have heirloom weapons.
I always snatch up greater eternal essences and large brilliant shards when they're at a good price. That way I can easily make +9 and +22 int to weapons. I don't use heirloom weapons for my casters and healers after they hit their 40s, that way I can use the oils on their weapons for more int.
I also find flasks of distilled wisdom sell very very well. +65 int for a flask at level 50 is very nice, and since lots of folks leveling have an 85 funding everything, they don't mind plunking down gold for those. I like them for me too.
Oh, and I find not many people remember that levelers like to gem their gear, even in the 60s. So I make a killing with brilliant and delicate bloodstones, and skyflare and earthsiege metas.
Well I guess I turned a discussion about enchanting mats into how I like to make gold with other professions. Whoops!
Xantenise Aug 12th 2011 8:06PM
So where do you get the higher level enchants now? I heard that you don't have to be level 84 anymore but I can't find them anywhere!
Basil Berntsen Aug 12th 2011 8:17PM
In the enchanting shop in your main city- just check all the NPCs. One of them will sell the recipes for shards.
Xantenise Aug 12th 2011 8:18PM
@Basil Excellent, thanks mate!

the thing about making money through enchanting is that it often pays to diversify. I made a ton of money in wrath and recently in cata selling stuff to people with heirlooms, but if other auctioneers get wind of your market, it tends to get flooded. when i was selling agility weapon enchants for 500g each, after a couple weeks a bunch popped up for 200, which is barely profitable, so while waiting for the market to die again, i switched to making int and crusader enchants.

One of the ways I have made money on my server is using a Blacksmith/miner alt. Heavenly shards on my server can net me anywhere between 80 and 90 gold a pop. I use the BS to make Stormforge shoulders at a cost of about 30-40 G. Easy profit. I'll keep an eye on shards and find when they are low in supply. I'll make about 20-30 shoulders and put the shards up. They generally sell out in a few hours and double up what I spent on mats to make them. If it is a really slow day, I'll even farm the Obsidium and Elementium it takes to make the shoulders. Pure profit then.
