"I'm guessing that you're talking about the haunted memento, which will always show if you've got it in your inventory. Noncombat pets shouldn't stay out once you've logged. If others are staying out, it's a bug."That doesn't seem to answer the question asked. To me they are asking why only some of their characters re-summon the same mini-pet after re-logging. So it has nothing to do with pets staying out once you've logged, but everything to do do with the semi-recent change to mini-pets staying out between zone changes and the like.

I'm guessing that Adam has not used many vanity pets lately.

Since 4.2, my non-combat pets stay out when zoning, as well as re-summoning when I log in. It's quite nice, actually, to see Faela, my panther cub (named in honor our guild's fail-panther) bright eyed and ready for adventure, every time I log in.

I wonder if it has to do with an add-on. I know Blizzard recently changed pets to make them stay out more frequently (like after taking a flight path), but I've been using the add-on PetLeash for so long that I don't know when a pet should or shouldn't be out. They just always are.
8-12-2011 @ 11:19AM
I'm running the usual suite of addons (DBM, Omen, Recount etc) but not PetLeash or any other minipet/mount controlling addons, so I don't think it's that. Hopefully it's just an intended feature.

Of course Adam hasn't used any vanity pets recently. I reckon someone bought him a Pandaren Monk and he can't take the chance he'll summon it by accident.

Whatever non-combat pet I have out when I log off is still summoned when I log on, been that way since 4.0. So, if I log out with Core Hound Pup out, Core Hound Pup is still out when I log back in.

When I log in my last-summoned pet always reappears, which I believe is due to a change in a recent patch as others have said. I never used to use non-combat pets but now I have to because otherwise my last-summoned pet is the guild herald I used to vendor some junk and I burn his long cooldown the instant I log on. Very annoying.
I don't use any add-ons, and my pets are with me every time I log in. I'm guessing the pets staying summoned has something to do with the recent changes to pets. When you zone, your pet stays with you, so I guess it makes sense that when you "zone" into the game, the pet would be there anyway.

It's a bug that needs to be fixed. If I bring out my Argent Squire or Guild Herald and then don't dismiss it but let it disappear on its own, the next time I log in to that character, the squire or herald comes out on their own, wasting the cooldown. Sometimes I don't see the herald, but I see the icon with its 4 hour cooldown.

It's definitely a bug, but with the non-combat pet changes, what precisely the bug IS isn't clear. It's also definitely not an addon. I run the same addons account wide, and my death knight's Cornish Rex cat is out 100% of the time unless she's in the air on her flying mount. Pet reappears the instant she gets off of the flying mount (or off of the flight path, or logs in, or....you get the idea.) The ONLY time I have to resummon the kitty is when Pam dies, and the pet resumes 100% uptime once resummoned.By contrast, my shaman's noncombat pets are showing pre-patch behavior. If I fly somewhere, log in, zone in, whatever, I have to resummon the pet. For the record, I would like to say that I hope my DK's cat's behavior is the intended one and that my shaman is bugged.

This bug really sucks if you are a rogue who PvPs. Sneaky McSneak time...with a vanity pet tagging along... :(

This was a planned change to non-combat pets. Go read your 4.2 patch notes.

While I don't think Adam is answering the right question, I do believe it has something to do with the Haunted Memento. I have one on a couple characters and those particular characters are always having to re-summon their companion pets while others aren't. Meanwhile my gf, who also doesn't have one, never has to either. Could just be a coincidence...but I personally think it's related to the Haunted Memento.
8-12-2011 @ 1:32PM
@jhaiworonsky, I think you're on to something! My DK does NOT have a Haunted Memento, while my shaman DOES. I'll try banking the Memento and see if that fixes the bug.

It's not a bug - here's how it works. 4.1 (I believe) added a change so that non-combat pets will always remain summoned even after logging or changing zones. The confusion is probably steming from a couple things. One, this doesn't just include minipets but any "companion" including things like haunted momento or Innkeeper's Daughter. Sometimes they may take priority over minipets so you see them instead (and in particular, Blizzard did something weird with innkeeper's daughter to make her die sometimes). The other thing is that minipets will still disappear in places they normally would - when you die, get too far away, flightpaths, etc. Most things that trigger a loading screen (logging in and zoning into instances in particular) will automatically resummon them though.

Another (undocumented) change is that vanity pets (should) stealth when the owner is stealth. It will not appear stealth to the owner but will be stealth to others.

Actually no. I'm having completely random respawning of pets. I can throw down a squire, die during a boss fight, come in with no pet, then the NEXT time I zone in, my squire is back. I have tons of bugs in wow, all the time.

I got the Tiny firefly in the burning steppes on my paladin at the appropriate level. This was a few months ago. With one or two exceptions, until a couple weeks ago, it was out 100% of the time, with me only resumoning it once or twice. This included getting from that lvl (like 55) all the way to 85, and getting a t11 worthy raid setup for tanking. I BG'd from around 60-80, and alot of 80-85 with some dungeons in between, the firefly was always there without me summoning it, session to session, instance to instance. 83-85 and at 85 in particular i did ALOT of mining and herbing, over several weeks, the firefly always behind me scaring me into thinking someone was trying to ninja mah nodes >.<There is definitely some things/conditions that have at least some pets stay out alot lol. I seem to remember mostly having to resumon for troll instances, but only sometimes, and some raids. I dont know if that helps or not. I know in our guild 25s, we deliberatly dont have pets out for the sake of some ppls graphics. Maybe they left the auto despawning in raids for a similar reason. Trolls may also just be upgraded version of the old zones framework, and code or w/e isn't in them to keep pets out. *end random speculation*

The persistance of the Haunted Momento and the Innkeeper's Daughter has been reported back to 4.1, according to this old Warcraftpets.com report: http://www.warcraftpets.com/news/perma.asp?n=undocumented_changes_4_1The way pet persistance is supposed to work is the summoned pet remains the summoned pet after logouts, zoning, getting off flight paths, etc, until you summon another pet. Of course, with reports I've seen, both in my situation and others, there is a little confusion in the system for which pet, either true vanity or non-vanity "pets" such as The Innkeeper's Daughter, should be flagged for resummon.I think it has a bit to do with lag, as well. If you experience just the smallest bit of lag, even an amount that you don't notice, it could cause a problem with getting the correct information sent. Meaning that part of the pet-summon system is client side instead of just on their side.
