"Malygos regained his sanity just before the events of The Burning Crusade and spent most of that expansion pulling the ley lines of the world to the Nexus in order to prevent mortals from accessing the arcane energies."I'm not sure this is correct. From what I understand, it was the energies of the Netherdrakes that helped Malygos get his sanity back. These drakes brought back by Tyrigosa after players helped her defeat one of their leaders. Since the quest for this occured during BC, I don't think it's accurate to link Malygos's actions to Karazhan's demon problem. How Malchazzar was able to take control of the tower was never really explained as far as I can tell.

As far as I understand it, Malchezzar wasn't using Karazhan as a base as such, but rather taking advantage of its warped reality (and ease of access from the Twisting Nether) to use it as a gateway to invade Azeroth.

Aye, that makes much more sense Bruce. There isn't a hint of demonic presence until you ascend to the upper levels of Kharazan, otherwise its just all crappy Operas and Zombie guests. And a poorly built, malfunctioning security robot...

Yeah, I came here to post this. Malygos would have regained sanity during BC. Malchezaar's presence is probably due to the weakness of the dimensional fabric - he's described as an "agent".My guess is that he's some sort of advance scout.

The timeline is actually laid out with the two-part Shadow Wing manga series, which explains exactly how and when Malygos regained his sanity. It was JUST after the first Alliance forces traveled through the Dark Portal at the start of The Burning Crusade -- before the rest of us random adventurers went tromping merrily through. So the timelines actually match up, although we don't know for certain if that's what caused the disturbances to Karazhan or not.

I believe that Melchazzar was an advance scout as well. Which if you think about it makes sense...Sargeras knows just as much about Karazhan as Medivh does/did, since he had possessed for so long. It wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that Sargeras' next attempt to enter Azeroth is going to be using Karazhan to open another portal. Which will give him the opening he needs....AND give us what we all want: another chance to go back to the best raid in WoW. 8-)
