Official Transmogrification preview

- You can make one piece of armor look like another piece from the same slot.
- You will be able to change the looks of weapons, guns, and shields.
- There are restrictions (plate can only look like plate, cloth like cloth, etc.).
- You'll be able to see a preview of the transmogrification before it happens.
- It's going to cost some gold. In the preview picture, it's over 100g.
- You can undo it, just like you do with reforging.
The devil will be in the details here, and the only way we'll get those details is to get on the patch 4.3 PTR ... which can't come soon™ enough.
Blizzard's full statement after the break.
You've been asking for it, and we were listening. In patch 4.3 you'll be able to customize the appearance of your weapons and armor like never before.
The Ethereals, emerging from the nether, will bring with them a new technology they call Transmogrification. They're heading to the capital cities of Azeroth to set up shop and to offer adventurers a unique service -- copying the appearance of one magical item onto another. They only ask for a modest gold donation to recoup their costs.
Visiting a Transmogrifier will present players with a new interface that will allow them to change the appearance of an item while retaining its original stats. This means that you can raid in your paladin tier 12 Immolation set, but look like you're wearing Lightbringer, while priests can bring Benediction back -- at least in spirit. Hunters can once again roam the jungles of Stranglethorn Vale in their tier 2 Dragonstalker set. You could even slip into the saucy tailored Black Mageweave set for that matter. You know, with the thigh highs, and the little gloves, and the cute little... ahem.
Placing an item into the Transmogrifier interface will offer a preview of how the item will appear once the change is applied. However, not all item pairings are compatible with Transmogrification. In general, only items that have stats can be used in the transmogrification process. You must also be able to wear both items when using this service. Ethereals don't have much in the way of ethics, but allowing someone to appear as if they're equipping unusable items crosses the line. Similarly, they won't allow you to change weapon or armor types. Sneaky death knights can't make that breastplate look like a cloth robe, and you can't make a one-handed axe look like a two-handed axe, or transform a sword's appearance into that of a mace. Guns, bows, and crossbows will be the exception to this rule. You will finally be able to retain your dwarf's racial gun bonus while appearing with all the splendor and elegance of a bow wielder (or at least the relative silence of one).
Placing items into the Transmogrify interface will increase the gold cost of the process, and clicking the Transmogrify button (assuming you have the necessary funds) will put the appearance change into effect. The process can be reversed by clicking the undo icon on each item, and then hitting the Transmogrify button once more to save the changes. Any item that's transmogrified will have text indicating it's been altered by the process for all to see, similar to the item tooltip callout for reforged items.
Transmogrification encourages players to hold onto items with sentimental or aesthetic value, and the Ethereals anticipate that personal bag and bank space will be at a premium now that everyone will be hoarding their frilly pantaloons and leather jerkins. In anticipation of this new demand for additional storage space, they'll be introducing a unique Void Storage service. What's Void Storage, you ask? We'll provide more details soon.
We're looking forward to seeing how players choose to customize their character's appearance, and hope you're as excited as we are for the arrival of patch 4.3 and the Transmogrification feature. Do you have a favorite set or weapon that you'll be bringing back? Let us know in the comments below.

For my pally.... Judgement set all the way!!!! :-D
Tirrimas Aug 17th 2011 12:35PM
Truly, the most beautiful set in-game. Grats!
Batleth Aug 17th 2011 12:40PM
@Shammich:
AMEN BROTHER!
In other news, I wonder how many DKs are going to be crying in the corner after they realized they deleted/sold that sweet, sweet armor set they walked out of Eastern Plaguelands with?
Ilmyrn Aug 17th 2011 12:42PM
So glad I stashed that stuff in my DK's bank. It'll be hard choosing between that, T10, and T8. Man, DKs had some sweet armor sets in Wrath, huh?
Khayman Aug 17th 2011 1:18PM
I had the exact same thought when I saw this. My pally which has been my main since launch will be able to walk around in his hard earned Judgement set (collected over the course of the past 7 years). Then it occurred to me that people are generally unoriginal and every schmoe with the set will have it equipped on their pallys. So I am trying to figure out what set to wear, Soulforge most likely or banana shoulders I haven't decided.

GM's can restore that set for you. I put in a ticket during ICC saying basically that I was knew to the game and didn't think I'd want to hold on to old gear, but later regret trashing it and the GM was nice enough to give it back. It's just starter zone gear and vendors for copper, so there's no real risk involved as long as you dot make a habit of getting items restored.
na.alnaji Aug 17th 2011 1:33PM
You guys can't see the potential. I can raid with my mage in a tuxedo!
xenothaulus Aug 17th 2011 1:45PM
@Batleth: I knew I'd kept that all for a reason.
Drakkenfyre Aug 17th 2011 1:53PM
na.alnaji, afraid you can't.
The items to use must have stats.
Vitos Aug 17th 2011 2:11PM
"DKs had some sweet armor sets in Wrath, huh?"
I thought the art team did a better job with the DK armor in BC, but hey personal opinion right?
murmaiderxx Aug 17th 2011 2:38PM
@ Vitos
Nice troll.
Talia Aug 17th 2011 3:04PM
@na.alnaji - that was my thought exactly (well, nearly - sexy red dress for me!), until this part:
"only items that have stats can be used in the transmogrification process"
Sad face! Though the Elegant Wedding Dress has 88 Armour.... I wonder if that counts as a stat? For that matter, most of the Tuxedo parts have armour as well, so you may still be in luck! IF you're a cloth wearer, that is:
"Similarly, they won't allow you to change weapon or armor types. Sneaky death knights can't make that breastplate look like a cloth robe"
All in all though, it's more positive than negative! I'm excited to see what we can do with this!!
Angus Aug 17th 2011 3:28PM
My shaman still has the full cataclysm tier 5 set along with the fists.
He is going to look so bad ass. I may have to raid with him again.
Minstrel Aug 17th 2011 3:46PM
I just realized that the Fire Festival stuff (including the halo you get for stealing the fire from each opposing faction capital city) has stats....armor. That makes my day.
The Runecloth Robe (which looks just like the Truefaith Vestments but is far, far cheaper to craft), Crown of the Fire Festival and Benediction is a pretty sweet starting point for a priest set.

I see a few problems with transmogrifying so far:
1 - Since most holiday and novelty items don't have stats, we can't use them, which is half the reason i was looking forward to this feature, so boo on that.
2 - Of the holiday and novelty items that DO have stats, most of them are cloth (to ensure all classes can wear them) but only cloth classes will be able to transmogrify to them! Boo again.
3 - Most holiday or novelty sets don't cover every slot, so they're won't be much point in transmogrifying to them if we can't "hide" the other slots, like we currently can do with Helm and Cloak slots. Now would be the perfect time for Blizz to include a "hide" option for every viewable gear slot (except weapons). I don't see any reason why not. Sure, we could fight "naked" then, but why not? Conan the Barbarian anyone?
4 - What is Blizz going to do about the 10 million requests for gear restoration they suddenly get from all the people who had to delete old, irreplaceable items because they had no place to store them and are going to want them back now?
Shadowwind Aug 17th 2011 7:28PM
I have a sneaking suspicion that armor is NOT going to count as a stat. If nothing else, it would be unfair for cloth classes to be able to transmogrify holiday sets while no one else can. I read "stats" as +stam, +agi, etc; the stats that make an item a green instead of a grey/white. Could be wrong, hope so, but that's how I'm interpreting things.
dracono42 Oct 4th 2011 4:43PM
