Official Transmogrification preview

- You can make one piece of armor look like another piece from the same slot.
- You will be able to change the looks of weapons, guns, and shields.
- There are restrictions (plate can only look like plate, cloth like cloth, etc.).
- You'll be able to see a preview of the transmogrification before it happens.
- It's going to cost some gold. In the preview picture, it's over 100g.
- You can undo it, just like you do with reforging.
The devil will be in the details here, and the only way we'll get those details is to get on the patch 4.3 PTR ... which can't come soon™ enough.
Blizzard's full statement after the break.
Blizzard Entertainment
You've been asking for it, and we were listening. In patch 4.3 you'll be able to customize the appearance of your weapons and armor like never before.
The Ethereals, emerging from the nether, will bring with them a new technology they call Transmogrification. They're heading to the capital cities of Azeroth to set up shop and to offer adventurers a unique service -- copying the appearance of one magical item onto another. They only ask for a modest gold donation to recoup their costs.
Visiting a Transmogrifier will present players with a new interface that will allow them to change the appearance of an item while retaining its original stats. This means that you can raid in your paladin tier 12 Immolation set, but look like you're wearing Lightbringer, while priests can bring Benediction back -- at least in spirit. Hunters can once again roam the jungles of Stranglethorn Vale in their tier 2 Dragonstalker set. You could even slip into the saucy tailored Black Mageweave set for that matter. You know, with the thigh highs, and the little gloves, and the cute little... ahem.
Placing an item into the Transmogrifier interface will offer a preview of how the item will appear once the change is applied. However, not all item pairings are compatible with Transmogrification. In general, only items that have stats can be used in the transmogrification process. You must also be able to wear both items when using this service. Ethereals don't have much in the way of ethics, but allowing someone to appear as if they're equipping unusable items crosses the line. Similarly, they won't allow you to change weapon or armor types. Sneaky death knights can't make that breastplate look like a cloth robe, and you can't make a one-handed axe look like a two-handed axe, or transform a sword's appearance into that of a mace. Guns, bows, and crossbows will be the exception to this rule. You will finally be able to retain your dwarf's racial gun bonus while appearing with all the splendor and elegance of a bow wielder (or at least the relative silence of one).
Placing items into the Transmogrify interface will increase the gold cost of the process, and clicking the Transmogrify button (assuming you have the necessary funds) will put the appearance change into effect. The process can be reversed by clicking the undo icon on each item, and then hitting the Transmogrify button once more to save the changes. Any item that's transmogrified will have text indicating it's been altered by the process for all to see, similar to the item tooltip callout for reforged items.
Transmogrification encourages players to hold onto items with sentimental or aesthetic value, and the Ethereals anticipate that personal bag and bank space will be at a premium now that everyone will be hoarding their frilly pantaloons and leather jerkins. In anticipation of this new demand for additional storage space, they'll be introducing a unique Void Storage service. What's Void Storage, you ask? We'll provide more details soon.
We're looking forward to seeing how players choose to customize their character's appearance, and hope you're as excited as we are for the arrival of patch 4.3 and the Transmogrification feature. Do you have a favorite set or weapon that you'll be bringing back? Let us know in the comments below.

It is possible to duo the first boss, actually pretty simple too. Myself (holy priest) and a friend (mut rogue) did it just the other day. Just make sure you have a dps who can kill adds, and someone to heal razorgore if needed.
Astoreth Aug 17th 2011 12:57PM
On the upside, with this new service, you can probably find plenty of people willing to raid BWL with you to get some sweet old-school gear of their own
furrama Aug 17th 2011 2:01PM
You can't solo BWL due to mechanics, (Razorgore hates you). You need at least two people, but I'd bring at least three if I were you.

Brawler's Harness and a psychotic grin.
RuzGofDI Aug 17th 2011 12:43PM
The Harness is a shirt item. I have my doubts that we'll be able to change a chest piece into the look of a shirt item.
Which is sad, because that would go awesomely with Big Bad Pauldrons.
Shinae Aug 17th 2011 2:25PM
There is an uncommon leather chestpiece from BC content that looks like a Brawler's Harness. I forget what it's called...

So they say that they don't want costume slots, but they make us pay for them?
Blizzard: Goldsink hypocrites.
It's not the fact of they are giving us what we want; it's basically that they are giving us what we want that they have considered and now we have to PAY for it. Not all of us have the gold to do this sort of thing.
VioletArrows Aug 17th 2011 12:37PM
You would rather this cost meatspace money?
Nina Katarina Aug 17th 2011 12:40PM
What, it's just over 100g? That's less than 15 minutes worth of Molten Front dailies. Half a maelstrom crystal. A couple stacks of mid-50s herbs on my server. If you can't farm that much, you expect us to believe that you're going to find the time to farm the items?
Minstrel Aug 17th 2011 12:43PM
Gold sinks are necessary parts of a game economy. Money comes out of nothing, unconnected to anything of actual value...without gold sinks, inflation would blast through the stratosphere, causing prices to rise hugely. The main problem with that is that new players, who don't have hundreds of thousands of gold, would be locked out of the economy.
Gold sinks help keep inflation under control. They could institute gold sinks that provide no value (repairs are an example, and they could just up repair costs) so giving us gold sinks that allow us to do fun things should be praised, not vilified. It's not like they get some personal benefit from gold sinks...they can't cash the gold we spend with NPCs to buy themselves a new corporate yacht. ;)

Hush you negative nelly!
I am pretty sure the reasonable people all agree with us and we don't care!
*squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee* Tier 5, we are going to look so good!
MisterRik Aug 17th 2011 12:49PM
Really? I've been surprised by how easy gold is to get these days. I recently paid the 4000g for Master Riding on one of my toons, and within five days I had made all of that gold back, and then some, without any extra effort. Just questing, doing my mining and skinning along the way (no special farming efforts), and selling gear I found.
kingoomieiii Aug 17th 2011 1:50PM
Seriously? The 100g pictured is the same it would cost to REFORGE those items. It's showing the totaled vendor prices of the items he was transmogrifying (7).
Noyou Aug 17th 2011 4:29PM
Start saving up now dude. 5 fireland dailies will net you about 80-100g if not more. I am a casual and very casually use the AH. Even if you don't want to go out and quest you can make a decent amount of gold by fishing/herbing/skinning/mining buying up stuffs on the AH and reposting them. I would suggest going and buying some neat looking items to resell after patch 4.3.
AudreyR Aug 17th 2011 12:36PM
Thank goodness I'll get to keep the old gear sets I'm still trying to fill in! Yay!
VioletArrows Aug 17th 2011 12:36PM
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY GOLD! *slams open her guild bank vault*
RavenJet Aug 17th 2011 12:36PM
Ooh I should take my rogue through. Razorfen and deck her out in that saucy snakeskin set :)
Vorenos Aug 17th 2011 12:38PM
WOOOT!!!!! TIER 10 AND THUNDERFURY FOR EVAH!!!!!!
Mezuera Aug 17th 2011 1:11PM
This is a brilliant solution to the folks who wanted to be able to use their legendaries forever. My question is how heirlooms will interact with this? Will we be able to change their looks? I'm really getting sick of all my clothie alts wearing Dreadmist.
brain314 Aug 17th 2011 9:51PM
Not just your alt, but practically every single alt running pre-80 dungeons. That's been my one complaint with heirlooms, that it makes the game look WAAAAY too homogenized. 50% of the loot drops pretty much never get used because it would mean replacing an heirloom item, and most people would rather not give up that extra 5-10% bonus XP.
And my homogenized comment also applies to the top end as well. If you take the game even just marginally seriously, you'll aim to wear BiS whenever possible. And as you approach the top of the pyramid, your BiS will be just like everyone else's BiS, which again leads to a very (visually) boring game. It'd be nice to walk around town and not see everyone wearing the exact same tier pieces.
