Official Transmogrification preview

- You can make one piece of armor look like another piece from the same slot.
- You will be able to change the looks of weapons, guns, and shields.
- There are restrictions (plate can only look like plate, cloth like cloth, etc.).
- You'll be able to see a preview of the transmogrification before it happens.
- It's going to cost some gold. In the preview picture, it's over 100g.
- You can undo it, just like you do with reforging.
The devil will be in the details here, and the only way we'll get those details is to get on the patch 4.3 PTR ... which can't come soon™ enough.
Blizzard's full statement after the break.
Blizzard Entertainment
You've been asking for it, and we were listening. In patch 4.3 you'll be able to customize the appearance of your weapons and armor like never before.
The Ethereals, emerging from the nether, will bring with them a new technology they call Transmogrification. They're heading to the capital cities of Azeroth to set up shop and to offer adventurers a unique service -- copying the appearance of one magical item onto another. They only ask for a modest gold donation to recoup their costs.
Visiting a Transmogrifier will present players with a new interface that will allow them to change the appearance of an item while retaining its original stats. This means that you can raid in your paladin tier 12 Immolation set, but look like you're wearing Lightbringer, while priests can bring Benediction back -- at least in spirit. Hunters can once again roam the jungles of Stranglethorn Vale in their tier 2 Dragonstalker set. You could even slip into the saucy tailored Black Mageweave set for that matter. You know, with the thigh highs, and the little gloves, and the cute little... ahem.
Placing an item into the Transmogrifier interface will offer a preview of how the item will appear once the change is applied. However, not all item pairings are compatible with Transmogrification. In general, only items that have stats can be used in the transmogrification process. You must also be able to wear both items when using this service. Ethereals don't have much in the way of ethics, but allowing someone to appear as if they're equipping unusable items crosses the line. Similarly, they won't allow you to change weapon or armor types. Sneaky death knights can't make that breastplate look like a cloth robe, and you can't make a one-handed axe look like a two-handed axe, or transform a sword's appearance into that of a mace. Guns, bows, and crossbows will be the exception to this rule. You will finally be able to retain your dwarf's racial gun bonus while appearing with all the splendor and elegance of a bow wielder (or at least the relative silence of one).
Placing items into the Transmogrify interface will increase the gold cost of the process, and clicking the Transmogrify button (assuming you have the necessary funds) will put the appearance change into effect. The process can be reversed by clicking the undo icon on each item, and then hitting the Transmogrify button once more to save the changes. Any item that's transmogrified will have text indicating it's been altered by the process for all to see, similar to the item tooltip callout for reforged items.
Transmogrification encourages players to hold onto items with sentimental or aesthetic value, and the Ethereals anticipate that personal bag and bank space will be at a premium now that everyone will be hoarding their frilly pantaloons and leather jerkins. In anticipation of this new demand for additional storage space, they'll be introducing a unique Void Storage service. What's Void Storage, you ask? We'll provide more details soon.
We're looking forward to seeing how players choose to customize their character's appearance, and hope you're as excited as we are for the arrival of patch 4.3 and the Transmogrification feature. Do you have a favorite set or weapon that you'll be bringing back? Let us know in the comments below.

On my FB newsfeed from Blizzard US: "Our first patch 4.3 feature preview just went live and it's an exciting new way to customize the look of your character."
I was all "OMG It went LIVE!?!" as in "in-game" preview live (like Real ID crossrealm grouping).
It's a nice feature preview of a great feature, nonetheless. Good going, Blizz' !

It's going to cost some gold. In the preview picture, it's over 100g.

In that picture, it looks like it was 118 gold (and change) for seven pieces, though. That's around 16 gold per. Not bad at all, around the cost of reforging, maybe a bit higher.
The only shame, to me, is that the piece you use must have stats. So no purely cosmetic pieces can be used, which I think is odd for a cosmetic service. Still, the fact that weapons can also be transmogrified is a great bonus...I had assumed only armor.
Nice work, Blizzard!

It just occurred to me (I'm slow like that)...this means my cloth casters can now use Whitemane's Chapeau as their helm look. :D :D :D
That, all by itself, makes this the Greatest Change In WoW History. But I will certainly find millions of other uses for it.

If it's anything like reforging, they just use the item's vendor value for the cost. (So an item that sells to a vendor for 5g would cost 5g to transmogrify.) It's a reasonable approach, as vendor value is generally based on item level, which is based on age, and so on.

Ahh, if only the second item had stats. It'd be a hoe-down in Baradin Hold

What I think is a crime is that my RP main (a mage), who previously has had the least choice in available RP gear due to his class... will still have the least choice of available RP gear. ;_; Looks like I'll never be able to give him massive molten claws of fire.
But who am I to question a good thing? Even IF it's not all I would want it to be, I still OMFGGIVEITTOMENOWWWWW

FINALLY!!!
This is some really good news! I know there are other MMOs out there that have this ability and I'm glad to see we've (WoW) are going to do it also.
I think it'll be really fun and cool to see all the old gear come back in style. It's like the retro-era's return!!
Game On!!

Finally.
I'll admit, I'm a little disappointed; some of my favorite gear sets employ mix-n-match armor types; my DS3 Paladin gear with the T6 Priest cowl lookalike, for example, or, for the Scarlet Crusader inside all of us, Ragesteel set (Plate) + Swashbuckler Boots (Leather) + Mage T4 lookalike cowl (Cloth). At least I can still whip that stuff out in Stormwind or Orgrimmar.
Oh well. At least I can wear my Judgment, my T4 on my druid, or my T10 (or starter gear) for my DK. This will be great.
Homeschool Aug 17th 2011 1:35PM
I think you'll still be able to mix and match - from what they've said, it doesn't appear to be tier-to-tier, but piece-to-piece. (Given that they limited it by armor/weapon type, that seems exceedingly likely.)
More likely, it'll work like Reforging, in that you'll assign the new look for each piece (or retain it, if so desired.) Aside from being great for those of us (currently) stuck in the latest fashion, while old favorites rot in our bank, it'll also be handy for the clown-style transition between sets or while leveling, where you look like you dressed in the dark.
Ilmyrn Aug 17th 2011 1:44PM
@Homeschool: I realize we won't HAVE to only use pieces of one set. What i meant was that I wish we could make a piece of armor look like any other piece that the wearer can equip, so that i could have the appearance of a cloth piece while really wearing plate, mail, or leather.

get outta here ugly hunter shoulders!
wtb mail helm that looks like the fishing hat
Feldring Aug 17th 2011 12:47PM
Mike, I know it's not exactly the same but your hunter could run around with the Stylin' Adventure Hat! http://www.wowhead.com/item=25681

Curious, have they said anything about non-combat click effects and if they'll stay post Transmogrification? For instance, can I transmogrify my old Arcanite Reaper from the WotLK event and still right click on it to rock out at the end of a raid? Or summon a parrot from a Transmogrified Bloodsail Admiral's Hat?
Cataca Aug 17th 2011 1:28PM
Depends how you do it.
If you morph the Bloodsail Admiral's Hat so that it looks like T11it will still work because it is still that item. It just looks different.
But if you morph your tier helm to look like the Bloodsail Admiral's Hat, clicking on your tier helm will not summon the bird. It's still your tier helm.
Homeschool Aug 17th 2011 1:38PM
@Cataca - I hope you realize what a big can of worms you've opened. If the effect lasts until undone, not only can you make your current gear look like fun gear, but you can make the fun gear look like current gear... and then rock out on it. :)
Arturis Aug 17th 2011 2:19PM
You would be using the stats and on click effects of the actual item you have equipped - Transmogrifying just swaps out the visible model.
Grayswindir Aug 17th 2011 12:41PM

Ilmyrn Aug 17th 2011 12:44PM
I wish I still had my Zandalari set. Oh well.
akiva Aug 17th 2011 12:42PM
Reminds me of an old saying...
"Just remember this, when next you look to kill
That a man who's truly skilled can look quite good in twill."
Cataca Aug 17th 2011 1:32PM
