German site
Buffed.de recently posted a rundown on the newest patch 4.3 news from Gamescom in Germany, where Tom Chilton revealed that part of the Deathwing fight will take place on the back of the Aspect of Death. We might actually be fighting Deathwing multiple times, with one of the fights being on his back. The translation is a little fuzzy, but there will definitely be some fighting while in-flight as players try to bring the great dragon down.
Gamescom has already brought us
huge WoW news in the form of the gear transmogrifiers as well as gear storage NPCs and the fact that we will get to face Deathwing sooner than we thought. Stay tuned for more announcements.
Brace yourselves for what could be some of most exciting updates to the game recently with patch 4.3. Look at what's ahead: new item storage options, cross-realm raiding, cosmetic armor skinning and your chance to battle the mighty Deathwing -- from astride his back!

I called this back in March 2010:

Knowing WoW's animations and how other "mounted" fights play out this will probably still feel very wooden, clunky, not nearly as fluid and exciting as it should (God of War-y, never played it but videos of the gigantic bosses look great).
Still playing WoW, not hating, just cautious not to get my hopes too high up.
As for the translation - it says that we'll have some phases on Deathwing's back and that the fight might take place in the Twilight Highlands, but that's just one of many ideas so far. So I'm guessing we won't see 4.3 anytime soon when stuff like this isn't even set in stone yet.
More interesting - According to this article Chilton specifically said that one of the 3 new 5-mans will be revolving around the War of the Ancients. So I guess we'll never see this as a raid but merely as a 5-man.

I'm thinking that the objective of such a phase might be to weaken his armor? If his armor is what keeps his molten physical form stable, and we partially dismantle it, he may not be able to control his faculties as well in a later phase, giving adventurers an advantage.

Instead of avoiding the floor, we get to fight it!
cameron Aug 17th 2011 12:48PM
I've been tanking the floor for years.
Thomas Higgins Aug 17th 2011 1:19PM
What? Surely the floor is lava?

First thing that came to mind was "The Neverending Story."
"Yeeeeaaahhhh!!"

If there ever were a case for false advertising... Although the people who saw the sequel were asking for it.
*sarcasm off*

If anything I can see it as flying on his back to knock off the plates acting as his armor.
underground_slacker Aug 17th 2011 11:47AM
kind of expecting it honestly. how do you fight a guy who can fly? challenge him to a fight for azeroth and he can just stay up high and rain fire-or at best ignore you and bugger off on his way.
my guess is first phase is tear up his wings and force him down, final phase is his human mac wielding form with some elementium plate ripping off section between.

"how do you fight a guy who can fly?"
Well, we could always bust out what we learned from our days doing Sons of Hodir dailies.
SR Aug 17th 2011 12:20PM
Or Alysrazor or Atramedes or Razorscale or Sapphiron or Sindragosa or any other flying bosses we've killed already.
Buffles Aug 17th 2011 5:20PM
All they will do is reskin the gunship battle with Deathwing and Alexstrasza with us jumping back and forth!
I'm really kidding of course, I just couldn't help myself because we all know the QQers and haters are thinking this!
underground_slacker Aug 17th 2011 5:42PM
@SR but they were all in a kind of sealed area with no escape or just the underling for a much powerful enemy. This is the aspect of death, he flies across zones and one shots things for fun. he does not land and engage in combat, that is highly inefficient when killing insects like the mortal races.
He isn't ,as far as we know, fighting to stop us reaching some variant of the frozen throne like sindragosa. far as we know right now barring a n'zoth reveal he is it. the big kahuna, he can just leave if he wants.

OK. I give up. I give up on being productive today. I check my RSS feed, read the new news from Gamescom, write about it to some friends, then I get up to-- WAIT, RSS feed has new items! New news from Gamescom! Gotta write to friends! OK, time to get back to--

Pretty sure the WoW Insider podcast not only predicted a fight on his back, but also the idea of the Deathwing Raid being multiple bossfights of Deathwing.
Feldring Aug 17th 2011 12:22PM
It would be AMAZING if the riding-Deathwing's-back phase takes us through multiple zones. Can you imagine pummeling Deathwing while he swoops around different locations in Azeroth? That would be a memorable fight. :-)
Think it's something even remotely possible from a technical standpoint?
Sir Broose Aug 17th 2011 1:09PM
And every time you wipe, you rez at whatever graveyard was nearest at that moment. Now that would be brutal!
glyakk Aug 17th 2011 2:39PM
I can just see it now.. i am sitting in org and for the 20th time in the last hour i see a raid flying by on death wing.... or while fighting him you see a raid just in front of you on another deathwing.. would ruin my IMMERSION!! lol

"Don't stand in the green spots."
"Got it. Are they damage or debuff?"
"Neither. Just gross. Deathwing really needs to have those looked at."
