So it's not so much storage of the exact item you put in, as a check list that you've owned that item at one point and can pull a version of that item out.
Here's hoping the list of storeable items includes tabards.

Sounds like that is the case.
Then maybe with there being a record of you possesing that item (as it's in storage) you can choose to cosmetically wear it via transmogrification. Then it won't matter what gemming or enchants you had on the old gear as it's all cosmetic with your current gear underneath. It'll be interesting to find out how it all works because I'm sure my guessing is completely wrong ; )
