The gamescom 2011 convention is underway in Cologne, Germany, and the first day kicked off with a few big patch 4.3-related announcements for World of Warcraft. Here's a quick summary of the features and content that the World of Warcraft developers are talking about at the show:
Transmogrification: The ethereals are setting up shop around Azeroth to offer adventurers their latest astonishing interdimensional service. The upcoming Transmogrification feature will let players customize the appearance of their gear like never before. For the full rundown on how it works, check out our recently posted blog: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/blog/3309048#blog
Void Storage: Now that you've got a good reason to hang onto your old gear, you're going to need somewhere to store it all. With Transmogrification comes Void Storage, a long-term stash where players will be able to keep the items they just can't seem to let go of. Those ethereals think of everything, don't they? Look for an official blog post with screenshots and details tomorrow, August 18.
Death to Deathwing: Alongside all this comes a whole lot of new content. The developers revealed that patch 4.3 will feature three new 5-player dungeons, setting the stage for the ultimate fight in Cataclysm: the final showdown against Deathwing himself. Patch 4.3 will include a whole new tier of raid content culminating in an epic boss encounter unlike anything you've yet experienced in World of Warcraft.
Raid Finder and More: We're also working on a number of other new features, including a Raid Finder -- a tool similar to the Dungeon Finder designed to match players looking for PUG-friendly raids -- and some cool renovations for Azeroth's traveling Darkmoon Faire.
But don't worry -- there's plenty of time to prepare. We're keeping a close eye on players' progress through the Rage of the Firelands content, and lots of folks are still busy working on obtaining the Dragonwrath legendary staff, completing the Molten Front dailies, and rallying to take down Ragnaros. We'll have lots more details on the raid, dungeons, and other content coming in patch 4.3 in the months ahead, so keep an eye on the official World of Warcraft website.

Let's face it, Transmogrification is going to end Blizzards creativity when it comes to gear design. What's the point of Blizzard trying to astound people with aesthetics anymore now that every paladin in the world is going to resemble a banana.

Honestly, I disagree. I think there will always be players who want to roll in the latest set, and our artists take great pride in their work, so they will always try to make all the art for new gear as awesome as they can.
For players who are between full sets, Transmogrification offers a cool opportunity to sport a 'complete' look, and enjoy favorite gear art from the past. Few players will want to look the same all the time though, so I expect that new art and new tier sets will remain in demand.

I wonder how many people will only use the transmogrification to complete a set. As a warrior I don't want my BiS items to be the off set pieces for pallies or dks. If no one needs the off set warrior item I might take it so I can make http://www.wowhead.com/item=71029 look like http://www.wowhead.com/item=70912. Either someone makes 18 gold, gets a maelstrom crystal, or I get to have a more complete looking set.

No surprise that someone's already QQing about Transmogrification and making baseless claims. Sad, really. Some people *gasp!* actually like changing their gear's look over the course of the game - I know I do, it's part of why I don't have any heirlooms. And there will always be those who earn their full tier gear and want to strut around in it. ^_^
...granted, I'm stoked for Transmogrification because now I have an excuse to collect this awesome BC-era set for my fire mage. But still.
Also: I now mourn for the loss of the non-existent Whack-A-Gnome. And I play Alliance.

"I now mourn for the loss of the non-existent Whack-A-Gnome. Because I play Alliance."
Fixed that for you.
Fletcher Aug 18th 2011 3:12AM
Beta testing of the whack-a-gnome revealed a design flaw, in that gnomes have a tendency to explode when struck violently (or at least the gizmos in their pockets do). Thus the design was altered to use gnolls instead.
Science, bitches. It gonna @#$% you up.

"Why did we implement Whack-a-Gnome? Because Whack-a-Tauren won't fit into the arcade."

OOH I wonder if we can change heirloom gear!

Speaking of Gnomes, i have a Gnome Mage and was wondering are we going to see any new water elemental Models? Such as a questline in the future for... more skin options. Or ANYTHING! The new Cataclysm models look way cooler.
Fletcher Aug 18th 2011 3:22AM
Oddly enough, I was considering this just earlier today! I think it'll go in the bag along with new and/or female skins for warlock minions.

First thing I'm gonna do with this gear appearance changer is get full paladin dungeon set 3 on my DK. I'll be honest, I'd do it purely to see the reaction on some old BC player's face. Of course, the original T2 set would be even better, but that switch won't be possible.
Adam Aug 18th 2011 2:28AM
I'm pretty sure it's stated in a blue post somewhere that you're limited to class specific tiers when you change your look. Since there were no DKs in BC, you'd be forced to find the raid drop that's cosmetically equivalent, not the set itself. Of course, this could all change in the amount of time it will take for them to release the patch. Or by tomorrow morning...whichever comes first...
Fletcher Aug 18th 2011 3:09AM
The dungeon sets in BC, while they have class-specific bonuses, don't have class *restrictions*; for instance the Righteous Armor set reduces the mana cost of consecration and reduces the cooldown on Righteous Defense - which are only ever going to be useful to paladins - but the set is wearable by any plate-wearer (such as a DK). My own DK has the purple Judgement recolour already.

I'm glad I kept my original DK gear. :)
