This could also mean High Elves may be playable someday. Hell, give the Horde Drow while you're at it. I still think 3 factions is a possibility down the road, mostly because I can't really see Tauren being down with Sylvanas long-term. That would be a sweet 5.0 shakeup.

Not so sweet for guildies who can no longer play with each other if their chosen race suddenly goes off for to a different faction.

Look at it this way:Let's say, in 5.0, that your main's race (whichever it is) will leave the Alliance permanently. You don't have a say in this, and you have two options:1) You can race change your main to stay Alliance, or2) You can leave your Alliance friends and guild behind.Considering this, I'm sure you can see why ideas like "the Tauren should leave the Horde" or "we should wipe out the Forsaken and have all Forsaken players race change to something else" are incredibly terrible ideas.

Again, with the (partial) demise of the silhouette theory, perhaps not all of a race will depart a faction--remaining Horde Tauren would then be Grimtotem-aligned, for instance. That way you only lose a capital city if you faction-shift. I'm dreaming really big here--some races could conceivably have a new capital-big dreaming. I don't want to split off friends/teams/guilds/RPers at all, but a three-faction dynamic would be an interesting shakeup.

That's a much better revision of the idea stated in your original post, so I just wanted to point out that the tauren that are *already* not part of the Horde are the majority of the Grimtotem tauren. If tauren become part of some third faction dealie, it won't be the Grimtotem who stay with the Horde.

Duh, you're right, I was thinking they sort of joined like Wildhammer and Dark Irons joined the dwarfs. Serves me right for being an Alliance-type.

The Night Elves are actually fashioned after the Drow of RPG legends and lore. Unfortunately, they have been toned down in World of Warcraft and its stories. Originally, they were a very bloodthirsty race based on a stringent matriarchal society. Not necessarily evil but ruthless when it came to getting things done. Blizzard has released concept art and interviews in the past about this.
