Official Void Storage preview

In the UI example above, it shows three items being deposited into the Void Bank, costing a total of 300g, or 100g/item. Blizzard notes that the final cost of depositing items is not final.
The big points of Void Storage:
- Up to 80 slots
- Access by talking to a Vaultkeeper in Stormwind or Orgrimmar
- Costs gold each time you deposit or withdraw an item from Void Storage
- Deposited items will be stripped of gems, enchants, and reforging
- Item restrictions exist (not specified yet)
- A new bag, bank, and void storage search field will appear in all inventory windows
Void Storage preview
For quite some time now, players have been asking for a location in which to store important keepsakes including treasured armor sets, unique quest rewards, and gifts from friends, as well as other valuable items they've collected on their journeys throughout Azeroth.
This is a feature we've wanted to add to the game for a while, so we're excited to announce that, thanks to the ingenuity and entrepreneurship of the Ethereals, a new long-term storage option will soon be available to completionists and collectors alike.
Void Storage
In patch 4.3, characters of all levels will be able to take advantage of a new technology known as "Void Storage," which will open up 80 slots of long-term storage space. Void Storage vaults will be available in both Stormwind and Orgrimmar and can be accessed simply by speaking with your local Vaultkeeper.
A variety of items can be placed into Void Storage -- including soulbound items and Battle.net Account Bound items -- making it the perfect location to store trophies from past conquests, as well as armor you may want to hold onto for Transmogrification. So, if you've been looking for a good home for those old tier sets or your vanity holiday items, Void Storage is it! And it's as easy to use as dragging and dropping.
In return for this unique service, the Ethereals will require a small fee for each item deposited into or withdrawn from their Void Storage apparatus. Multiple items can be added and removed at once, and the cost of each transaction will be display at the bottom of the screen, updating dynamically as you select additional items to deposit or withdraw. Once an item is placed into Void Storage, it can remain there indefinitely for no additional cost.
It's important to note that the goal of Void Storage isn't to be a second bank, but rather a place where players can safely store items they wish to keep for the life of the game, either for sentimental or aesthetic reasons. Since this particular storage option isn't really intended for belongings that you'd use on a regular basis (like your current set of raiding gear, for example), any item placed in Void Storage will be stripped of all its enhancements, including enchants, gems, sockets, and reforged stats, and some items will simply not be eligible for Void Storage at all. This will help us reduce the impact such storage can have on the game servers, and ultimately allows us to provide a lot of long-term storage space with minimal impact on everyone's play experience.
(Cost shown to unlock Void Storage is not final)
Bag Search: Find What You Need, When You Need It
Now, you might be thinking, "Alright, those Ethereals are pretty nifty, and having more storage is great! But what about actually being able to find what I own? Do you know how long I looked for that one stack of Papa Hummel's Pet Biscuits? Like, a year. Okay, maybe 15 minutes. Either way, not even a tiny, delicious fat baby raptor is worth that kind of effort, and I love fat baby raptors."
Never fear, fellow tiny-limbed-corpulent-dinosaur enthusiast! We've got you covered. In addition to Void Storage, we're also adding a bag search feature in 4.3 that will allow players to search for items within their bags and bank space, all with just a few keystrokes.
Integrated directly into the bag and bank UI, this new search feature will be incredibly quick and easy to use. To find an item in one of your bags, in your character's personal bank, guild bank, or Void Storage vault, you'll simply type the name of the item -- or a word in the item's name -- into a small search box located near the top of your main backpack, and your open inventory will be filtered accordingly. Only the items that match the word or name you've entered will display, making it easier than ever to find exactly what you need, exactly when you need it.
Please keep in mind that both Void Storage and the upcoming bag search features are still in development, so their functionality may change before release. We're very excited to be offering both of these inventory management features and will be providing more information as the development of patch 4.3 continues.

I knew I was going to get voted down.
"I hope we can disable this, because it might be great for some, but annoying for others."
"OH MY GOD, HE THINKS IT SUCKS! DOWNVOTE HIM!"
Options for features. You wouldn't appreciate it if they decided to move all action bars to the top of the screen, and move the minimap to the center, without giving you the option to change it. Some people will like the new feature, some people won't. How to make them both happy? Include an option to disable it. Win/win.
Eirik Aug 18th 2011 1:51PM
I hear you and sympathize, Drdakkenfyre. I would not even be offended if you needed to use the macro API ("slash commands") to do the turning on and off.
I use BankItems, which is largely a command line interface. And the beauty of a command line interface is that it does not require any screen real estate to add a new command or function, unlike graphic interfaces. Menus (startmenu, for example) are both a recognition of that, and a compromise.
If, like me, you've already got (most of) the functionality being added, the built-in search function won't add much. (Thus spake the item-set addon user too, I imagine.)
Blizzard recognizes the merits of "don't make it easy to screw up your character". For example, the guy you talk to to turn XP gain off is stealthed and in a location characters don't go to on a regular basis. Unless you know he's there, you are unlikely to accidentally turn your XP off.
Al Aug 18th 2011 1:58PM
I almost down-voted you for "enuf", but moved on.
Drakkenfyre Aug 18th 2011 2:16PM
"Enuf" is a pretty common abbreviation. It's similiar to "thru", which has seemed to overtaken "through", as even some companies use it (see Blizzard, for example. I know I've seen it used by GM's lots of times.) It might not be grammatically correct, but at least it's not "plz", or even worse, "pl0x".
Eyhk Aug 18th 2011 2:13PM
For the amount of customization you want, I think getting mods would do so much more for you than to complain. Just a couple mods and you can basically rid your entire screen of everything. And I'm not trying to be sarcastic, minimalist looks with only what you need are definitely better UI design than everything everyone might need at any given moment. However, since Blizzard also needs to make it easy to use for the new user while also not cluttering the configuration screen too much, they lean heavily on the mod makers for the rest.
Drakkenfyre Aug 18th 2011 2:32PM
Eyhk, it's not that I want a simplistic, nothing-on-it UI. It's that I want an option for each UI-changing feature to allow it to be disabled. If someone doesn't care what the item level of an item is, they can turn that off. If someone doesn't care what the vendor value of an object is, they can turn it off. It someone doesn't want their chat and/or combat logs in one place, they can move them.
They add options to most of these changes. You can choose whether or not to have item levels on tooltips. You can choose whether or not the world map is fullscreen, or not.
But the thing that makes me worried about this being a permanent change is this,
"Hey, we're going to stick a clock up by the minimap. But there's an option to disable it if you don't want. Hey, look at that, we removed that option!"
They added the option to remove the clock, then a few months later, REMOVED the option. So now you are forced to have the minimap clock even if you didn't want it (a clock always existed by hovering over the sun/moon and later the date.)
I still would like to be able to change the quest log tracking to the old-style fading. So after it's been up awhile, it fades away unless you are completing objectives. Now you get two options. Up in your face all the time, or off.
There should be a better answer than "download a mod."
All that is needed is a "Show search field on bags and banks" option. They have options for a ton of other things, I hope this one gets one, too.
Eyhk Aug 18th 2011 3:21PM
The problem with an option for everything is that it quickly becomes an option for nothing, far to cluttered and complicated for any beginning user to even dare attempt to delve into its far reaches. That's why Blizzard is leaning on mod developers, to fill in that gap for the more experienced, I-know-what-I-want user. If every piece of customization was available in the configuration GUI, it would basically look like the Windows Registry. I doubt anybody would think going through it would be "fun".
Drakkenfyre Aug 18th 2011 6:46PM
But the thing is, with the exception of one or two things, there already ARE options for just about anything.
Have you looked at it lately? Each patch they rearrange it, and shove things in new catagories. Even going so far as putting a ! beside each new option.
Arrohon Aug 18th 2011 12:28PM
And if you call now you can get another Void Storage free! One easy payment of $19.99 and you get not one but TWO void storages. But wait! That's not all. We'll throw in a maelstrom crystal! For only $19.99 you can get two void storages AND a maelstrom crystal! Call now!
Yeah, am I only one that thought the announcement sounded like an infomercial? Void Storage: the Return of Billy Mays!
Shade Aug 18th 2011 12:40PM
Oh, so Billy Mays isn't dead, we just put him in void storage!
Sir Broose Aug 18th 2011 1:22PM
He's speaking to us from the Void.
HappyFunBall Aug 18th 2011 12:30PM
I was really hoping this was going to include a way to send account bound items cross-server.
Eyhk Aug 18th 2011 12:57PM
Unfortunately, if that was possible, along with those heirlooms you would either be able to send character-bound items across characters/servers or you wouldn't be able to store them at all.
I'm thinking that if they ever do implement battle.net account wide sharing, it would still be through their mail system.
Ace Aug 18th 2011 1:01PM
Even same-server would be nice. A common place to store them so you don't have to go find them on whatever toon they were on last when you start up a new character
Astoreth Aug 18th 2011 1:08PM
@Ace
My bank toon has a bank-bag JUST for storing heirlooms -- one character finishes with them, back they go to the banker for next use. That way I always know where they are -- and if for some reason they're NOT where they should be, Altoholic's got my back.
moosejaw Aug 18th 2011 12:33PM
I'm happy to see this feature, but sad I didn't see it before deleting my old tier sets due to lack of storage space. Duel spec druid with multiple tier sets per spec runs out of room mighty fast. At least I didn't raid in Vanilla and BC and only deleted T7, a bit of T8, T9 and T10. It hurt to do it, but I took screen shots to soften the blow.
I still have my Wildheart Raiment and many seasonal quest rewards that will finally have a nice resting spot.
Grovinofdarkhour Aug 18th 2011 12:34PM
I love fat baby raptors.
Bapo Aug 18th 2011 12:36PM
No word if the storage will be account bound or not. While I hope it is, I can understand why it wouldn't be. People would be screwing with other servers with items too easily and such. Unless heirlooms were the only items eligible to be taken out on a different realm.
But then idk if I would be willing to sacrifice the enchants on my weapons (chest and cloak enchants are really cheap) but the low level weapon enchants can be pretty spendy for the mats still
oniwah Aug 18th 2011 12:42PM
pay to deposit and withdraw? what is this the AH from diablo3?
The Dewd Aug 18th 2011 12:44PM
No, it's a very very clever way to get some gold out of the economy. EXTREMELY CLEVER. Tricksy little Ethereals.
