Official Void Storage preview

In the UI example above, it shows three items being deposited into the Void Bank, costing a total of 300g, or 100g/item. Blizzard notes that the final cost of depositing items is not final.
The big points of Void Storage:
- Up to 80 slots
- Access by talking to a Vaultkeeper in Stormwind or Orgrimmar
- Costs gold each time you deposit or withdraw an item from Void Storage
- Deposited items will be stripped of gems, enchants, and reforging
- Item restrictions exist (not specified yet)
- A new bag, bank, and void storage search field will appear in all inventory windows
Void Storage preview
For quite some time now, players have been asking for a location in which to store important keepsakes including treasured armor sets, unique quest rewards, and gifts from friends, as well as other valuable items they've collected on their journeys throughout Azeroth.
This is a feature we've wanted to add to the game for a while, so we're excited to announce that, thanks to the ingenuity and entrepreneurship of the Ethereals, a new long-term storage option will soon be available to completionists and collectors alike.
Void Storage
In patch 4.3, characters of all levels will be able to take advantage of a new technology known as "Void Storage," which will open up 80 slots of long-term storage space. Void Storage vaults will be available in both Stormwind and Orgrimmar and can be accessed simply by speaking with your local Vaultkeeper.
A variety of items can be placed into Void Storage -- including soulbound items and Battle.net Account Bound items -- making it the perfect location to store trophies from past conquests, as well as armor you may want to hold onto for Transmogrification. So, if you've been looking for a good home for those old tier sets or your vanity holiday items, Void Storage is it! And it's as easy to use as dragging and dropping.
In return for this unique service, the Ethereals will require a small fee for each item deposited into or withdrawn from their Void Storage apparatus. Multiple items can be added and removed at once, and the cost of each transaction will be display at the bottom of the screen, updating dynamically as you select additional items to deposit or withdraw. Once an item is placed into Void Storage, it can remain there indefinitely for no additional cost.
It's important to note that the goal of Void Storage isn't to be a second bank, but rather a place where players can safely store items they wish to keep for the life of the game, either for sentimental or aesthetic reasons. Since this particular storage option isn't really intended for belongings that you'd use on a regular basis (like your current set of raiding gear, for example), any item placed in Void Storage will be stripped of all its enhancements, including enchants, gems, sockets, and reforged stats, and some items will simply not be eligible for Void Storage at all. This will help us reduce the impact such storage can have on the game servers, and ultimately allows us to provide a lot of long-term storage space with minimal impact on everyone's play experience.
(Cost shown to unlock Void Storage is not final)
Bag Search: Find What You Need, When You Need It
Now, you might be thinking, "Alright, those Ethereals are pretty nifty, and having more storage is great! But what about actually being able to find what I own? Do you know how long I looked for that one stack of Papa Hummel's Pet Biscuits? Like, a year. Okay, maybe 15 minutes. Either way, not even a tiny, delicious fat baby raptor is worth that kind of effort, and I love fat baby raptors."
Never fear, fellow tiny-limbed-corpulent-dinosaur enthusiast! We've got you covered. In addition to Void Storage, we're also adding a bag search feature in 4.3 that will allow players to search for items within their bags and bank space, all with just a few keystrokes.
Integrated directly into the bag and bank UI, this new search feature will be incredibly quick and easy to use. To find an item in one of your bags, in your character's personal bank, guild bank, or Void Storage vault, you'll simply type the name of the item -- or a word in the item's name -- into a small search box located near the top of your main backpack, and your open inventory will be filtered accordingly. Only the items that match the word or name you've entered will display, making it easier than ever to find exactly what you need, exactly when you need it.
Please keep in mind that both Void Storage and the upcoming bag search features are still in development, so their functionality may change before release. We're very excited to be offering both of these inventory management features and will be providing more information as the development of patch 4.3 continues.

The Void Storage is for people who want to collect things. I can tell you you can fill your own bank up (maybe not all the extra slots) by 20 if you want, just by keeping the interesting items.
Noyou Aug 18th 2011 8:14PM
@Arrohan
Depends how many toons you have and what their professions are. I have an alt that is a tailor/enchanter and let me tell you, his bank is FULL. Even after I made a couple 36 slot enchanting bags (did help greatly) he's got little room for much else. The worst part is he was in my storage guild for the most part while leveling. Now if this toon was my main and needed room for cooking mats or tabards or whatever else he couldn't do it at all. It would be nice if all your toons could access this so you could eliminate all the extra holiday stuff instead of storing 10 sets of holiday gear and paying for said storage as well. Perhaps they will think of those of us who are altaholics ;)
Mperiolat Aug 18th 2011 1:10PM
Seems to me that, in theory, aside from armor for transmog, the stuff you put in void storage may not be coming out for a long time, if ever. So in all liklihood, you will only pay once.
Be nice to have a permanent place to keep my vintage Fulbog rod!
Eirik Aug 18th 2011 1:52PM
Anything that help you keep your rod to yourself, I'm in favor of. :)

So they open it up to "characters of all levels" but the rate to deposit is at 100g per item, what's the point? Just make it unlockable at level 85 and usable by all characters on that server, or even cross-server. That way, start up an alt on a different server - run to Void Storage and get your heirlooms that were put in there once your other alt leveled out of them.
Drakkenfyre Aug 18th 2011 1:22PM
I don't know about you, but I imagine people come across gear they want to keep a hell of alot sooner than level 85.
Imagine that nice caster set from around level 40. Or that nice tanking set from Burning Crusade.
"Well, then just keep them in your normal bank until then", you might say. And that defeats the purpose of this feature.
bilbomoody Aug 18th 2011 1:38PM
I agree that they may come across a set they like sooner than 85, in fact it's probably guaranteed. My original main character - a hunter, still has his Blackened Defias leather gear as it was the first set I actually worked towards getting, and he only hit level 50 the other day (new warlock main for the last few years, lol). However, how many NEW players can afford 100g per item to store something when they are only level 20? Unless they've got a friendly guild or are cheating (read: buying gold) there's no way they can come up with that kind of dough at lower levels.
Drakkenfyre Aug 18th 2011 2:32PM
I agree the price is too high, too. But they did say it wasn't set yet. I guess we will wait and see if "not final" means it drops down to something like 30g, or it goes to 90g.
It could always scale, like haircuts, but then you would have level 85's screaming that low-levels get it cheaper by stuffing their storage with things at low-level.
Eyhk Aug 18th 2011 2:26PM
I doubt Blizzard will use Void Storage to share items across your account, unless they plan to let you share soulbound equipment or create a separate storage for sharing. I'd think they'd simply use the mail system to do that like they currently have for cross-faction toons.
As for lower level toons, why use void storage when you haven't maxed out your bank? And if you have, why don't you have the money to purchase void storage? Just because the purpose of Void Storage is to store old gear sets doesn't mean that your bank and bags have been deprived of that purpose. As a lower level toon, keep stuff you don't need in your bank. Keep upgrading your bank with more slots and better bags until you are full. And if you still need more storage, the Void Storage is there for you.
Why complain that the climate-controlled 250 square foot storage unit is too expensive to store your old jeans when you have a fine closet in your room?

This is cool and I will use it to support my pack rat like habits, but I was really hoping for this to be some kind of cross server BoA bank. =/
USTommyMC Aug 18th 2011 1:26PM
I agree. Can't really complain and tough choices always have to be made in one form or another. At least now I can start a real collection:-)
Shawn Aug 18th 2011 5:04PM
Yay for extra storage. I use to be a really bad wow horder. I mean I would keep everything but over the years I've managed to just let stuff go but man I wish I kept some of my old tier sets now. Oh well I guess I can always go farm some of the old stuff.
obiwancookie1995 Aug 18th 2011 1:32PM
or theres a crazy idea of making a bank toon with no item restrictions or fees......
PeeWee Aug 18th 2011 1:39PM
The only restriction is that you can't send him Bound items... which more or less nullifies that idea.
Oh, snap.
Arrohon Aug 18th 2011 1:43PM
Except you can only put gear inside and almost all of that will be soulbound so it can't be sent to your bank toon. Everything a bank toon is good for won't translate to void storage (unless you want to pay gold to store heirlooms...).
Jon Aug 18th 2011 1:35PM
100g per item to store stuff? Screw that.
Eirik Aug 18th 2011 1:54PM
If your character has been around long enough to accumulate enough trophies to need void storage, chances are he's got enough money to afford to use it.
Noyou Aug 18th 2011 8:14PM
100g x 30 = 3000g x 10 toons = 30k. Good luck getting your stuff out of storage ;)
lidstrom Aug 18th 2011 1:46PM
between holiday items, archeology items, boa items and gear, i'm pretty sure i already have 80 items for void storage. :(
oh well... at least that'll open up 80 spots in my bank so i can ... continue collecting things. like, tabards. soo many tabards...
