I think the idea, beyond simply being a gold sink, is to discourage players from just using it for extra storage of every day items. I mean, if they wanted to just give us 80 more bank slots, they could do that. They didn't, so presumably, they want some mechanism to keep players from using it that way.

My guess is, we will be able to transmogrify directly from void storage, so ultimately it should be a matter of putting something in there and leaving it there, forever.
