The Queue: BlizzCon or bust, again

I seriously cannot believe BlizzCon is only two months or so away again. It really feels like just yesterday we were all hanging out by the pool at the Anabella or listening to Chris Metzen tell us what geek was. Ah, the good ol' days of 2010. Anyway, it's BlizzCon or bust again for me, and I am already hyping myself up to stupid amounts, excited to see friends, meet more fans, and order more pizzas to the hotel room. I am getting excited.
Mahgo asked:
What happened to having more frequent patches but with smaller amounts of content in each?
We don't know, really. If I had to guess, I think that Blizzard fell into the hole of its regular patch cycle again, where everyone wants to keep adding features until the thing becomes a big, bloated patch again. Features are great, and saying "this is the biggest update to the game yet" is great, but it also means that once someone has finished the available content, they move on to another game.
Honestly, I like the six- to seven-boss paradigm that Firelands has created for raiding content, and if we get this many bosses every three to four months, heroic modes included, I think it's enough at the top tier. As for PVE content like the Molten Front and other Firelands-specific content, Blizzard put in a lot of fun rewards and vendors and stuff, which kept me happy for all of the month and a half it took me to hammer out all of those dailies and get my mount and title. Now, I'm ready for more, and farming old content for transmog sets does not count as content.
chaosdefined asked:
Is it just me, or does this seem incredibly soon for the final patch and end boss of this expansion? I know that ICC lasted us quite a while but we did get a lot of bang for our buck with that expansion...I only actually got bored during the final few months before Cataclysm. But with this expansion, everything just feels so rushed or half-arsed that I've actually ended up getting fairly bored and distracted quite often.
Is that just me?
It isn't just you. It does feel odd that the expansion is "coming to an end" so early, but it really isn't, because this patch isn't coming out tomorrow. We've still got a good while until patch 4.3 is at our feet, and the full feature list isn't even out yet. Plus, Blizzard has said that it wants more expansions with shorter life cycles, so this is the first step in that.
The big problem with the great experiment called Cataclysm was that most of the new content that the expansion brought players was a new (and really great) 1-60 experience. The level 80-85 zones suffered because there weren't enough of them to hold the majority of players, and people didn't really see leveling an alt as new content. It was something that had to be done to facilitate new players, sure, but the fact is that this was not an expansion aimed at higher-level players, in the end.
What does this mean? Well, my prediction is either the next expansion is as big and expansive as Wrath was or we get smaller, shorter expansions with year-and-a-half life cycles (as opposed to two to three years).
morrie.berglas asked:
In regards to the new tanking threat changes, GC states "we want to shift more tank mitigation to require active management". Why would they buff tank threat *now* but without any of the other desired changes needed to keep tanking "fun"? I don't tank raids, but I still pride myself on my tanking abilities in dungeons and I don't want to be bored tanking waiting for my abilities to be updated to make tanking fun again.
The change to threat was not really a tank change so much as a DPS and quality of life change for tanks in random queues. New tanks were being discouraged from ever tanking because they would queue up, pop into the dungeon, and get yelled at by DPS who couldn't slow their roll for 5 seconds while a new tank learned the ropes. Well-geared DPS who weren't giant tools still could just auto-attack and rip threat off of an undergeared tank. This was discouraging and bad.
Now, with the increase to threat, players can worry about aggro rather than threat and just play the game and have fun, where tanks can do their job and DPS can do theirs. Threat generation isn't going to make tanking fun or ever did make tanking fun; it's a clunky mechanic made to give tanks something to do. Now, encounters have become dynamic enough where we have to move, fight, grab adds, kite bosses, etc., that holding threat as well just wasn't compelling to people new to the role.
durandal asked:
Since it was announced that one of the new dungeons will feature the War of the Ancients as a Caverns of Time scenario, and humans weren't really around by that time, what race do you think are we getting transformed into? Night elfs? Demons? Dragons? ... Raptors?
I really hope it's raptors.

Raptors? You mean like the sentient kind that a supremely-powerful mage could round up into a small army to take on his enemies?
Professor Orc Aug 19th 2011 11:10AM
The last boss fight will end kinda like the Lich King fight, except instead of Tirion resurrecting you Rhonin just charges in with a raptor stampede to save the day.
poggg Aug 19th 2011 11:19AM
Honestly, if he rode in on a horde of raptors, and just stampeded into all the assorted demons, I'd forgive Rhonin for all his Mary Sue-isms. Because that would be ridiculously awesome.
mingdi9 Aug 19th 2011 11:30AM
Rhonin will interrupt the last boss fight with a pack of raptors and save the day.
And the raptors are us. We are the raptors, and we save the day.
Rai Aug 19th 2011 11:38AM
It's as if a thousand sudden DeviantArt pictures of Rhonin saying "Clever girl..." were uploaded and disappeared without a sound...
DeathPaladin Aug 19th 2011 12:50PM
"No! I must command the raptors" he shouted Krasus said "No, Rhonin. You are the raptors" And then Rhonin was a dinosaur.

I would give Blizzard all my monies if Subject 9 and her flock of space raptors made a return appearance. Maybe if/when we ever get back out to space...

I would love to know what that video was...it's blocked on my country...DAMN YOU YOUTUBE!!!

The amount of people reading these comments who think this is *just* a joke must be pretty high.
In Night of the Dragon, Rhonin actually did convince a bunch of raptors in the Wetlands to form an army and help him attack Grim Batol.

How about pandas?
paragorillabear Aug 19th 2011 11:05AM
Raptors would be first on my list too!
Professor Orc Aug 19th 2011 11:08AM
I hope the WoTA raid takes place in a night elf city that gets destroyed in the end, meaning that no one will have to change shape because there will be no survivors.
It would be really thrilling to be in a dungeon where the walls around you are being sucked into the sundering as you fight for your life, not caring who you encounter or what they think of gnomes, orcs, and humans.
pancakes Aug 19th 2011 11:47AM
It could be a run for your life scenario l à la HoR, but running through a collapsing city in a semi-platform style instead of an incredibly slow guy.
The Dewd Aug 19th 2011 11:58AM
Yes, please. Who says an enrage timer means the boss will 1-shot everyone? You could just as easily have the world come to an end and lose the fight because you didn't stop the summoning of Sargeras in time.
They could just have Chromie show up and port you out and say "sorry, you didn't stop them in time, we'll have to try again - instead of just having the boss kill everyone.
Fletcher Aug 19th 2011 1:09PM
That actually sounds remarkably cool. Racing through Xin-Azshari just as the Well of Eternity becomes the Maelstrom and the Sundering begins, fighting demons and infinite dragons.
Anathemys Aug 19th 2011 6:40PM
@Fletcher
You forgot bad plot holes. Which (taking into consideration all the "lore" on the subject) is pretty much what the Maelstrom is. A plot hole that you could fly an Aspect through.
In all seriousness, I actually kinda want to fight bad plot devices. These would be represented in game as various races that didn't exist at the time, somehow showing up and stealing our loot. Then we get to hunt them down, kill them mercilessly, and steal our loot BACK.
Take THAT, ninjas...
Reklisc Aug 20th 2011 12:26AM
I just wanted to say that I TOTES love your new pic, Professor Orc!
(Insert Professor Farnsworth reference)
Also, I'd really love to have more in-depth talk about how such a raid would work (bosses - who and how many; where it would take place; more importantly, maybe we're doing this to kick Rhonin & Fwends out and set the timeline right with Nozdormu back in sync with time. Er, more or less). Heck, maybe that's where we're supposed to get our first taste of fighting Deathwing, just after he creates the Dragon/Demon Soul.
sibsince92 Aug 20th 2011 9:15AM
Oooh now that could be really interesting, we could even get to see the creation of the Naga first hand! And there's always the chance it could be the lead up to a raid with Queen Azshara as the main boss once we've killed Deathwing...Kinda like how at the end of TBC they whacked the Sunwell on the end to fill the time between people killing Illidan and Wrath coming out.
Corath Aug 19th 2011 11:08AM
I am quite upset that when we went to BlizzCon in 2008 that I didn't know about WoW Insider. Sure hope that we can make it there next year...
