Totem Talk: UI elements for elemental

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Totem Talk for elemental, enhancement, and restoration shaman. Josh Myers once only tackled the hard questions about enhancement but has recently expanded his sphere of responsibility to all shaman DPS specs. (And no, two-handed enhancement is still never coming back.)
Discussing addons is a tricky business. On the one hand, Mat McCurley does his weekly Reader UI of the Week segment, which is a sure sign that some of WoW Insider's readership are fans of customized UIs. On the other, we're all aware from comments, forum posts, and blogs that there are players who find anything outside of the default Blizzard UI to be sacrilege, and that using addons detracts from the experience of playing the game.
This is a post about which addons I feel are most beneficial to playing an elemental shaman. If you're a fan of totally customized UIs, these are the addons I think would help the most in improving your performance on an elemental shaman. If you're not a fan of addons or customizing your UI, that's cool, too. This just might not be the post for you, but I hope you read on and decide for yourself!

Totem addons
There was a time in The Burning Crusade when totem addons were all the rage, with addon developers almost competing to make the most user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing totem addon. Totem addons are designed to make managing your totems -- a pivotal mechanic of shaman -- easier, and to help you avoid the need to keybind or place all of your buff totems on an action bar. They also provide clear timers for each of your totems, which I consider a vast improvement over the small icons on the default UI.

With the coming of Call of the Elements and Blizzard's default totem manager, totem addons have become less of a necessity than they were in WoW's earlier expansions. TotemTimers, my personal recommendation and the most-visited totem addon on Curse, has reacted to Blizzard's introduction of totem bars by diversifying to become more of an all-encompassing shaman addon. It includes shield timers, an ankh timer, and a consolidated weapon imbue interface for easy use of Flametongue Weapon, as well as a lightweight timer addon for all three specs. It combines most of the shaman-specific functions I need into one easy to use addon, which is why I suggest it. I'm only one person, though, and some shaman swear by FloTotemBar or Yata, so they're worth looking into.
Shaman Friend
Shaman Friend is another shaman-specific addon, but it varies greatly from Totem Timers. While TT exists to help consolidate your abilities, Shaman Friend consolidates information. It shows you when Elemental Overload procs, warns you with a loud sound when your imbues/shields fall off, shows/broadcasts the buffs you Purge and the casts you interrupt, tracks your CC, and shows you what your Grounding Totem absorbs. In a sense, it's a shaman-specific scrolling combat text and one I've definitely made use of.
Cooldown timers
I've been using OmniCC since the first week I played WoW in The Burning Crusade, after finding myself constantly frustrated by the Blizzard default cooldown timer. With the importance of Lava Burst in elemental's priority list and the unpredictability of Lava Surge proc, I find that having an easy way to monitor ability cooldowns is crucial for maximizing my DPS. OmniCC helps by overlaying the actual seconds of the cooldown on the ability icons themselves, making your off-cooldown abilities very clear.

If I were only allowed to use one addon, it would be Power Auras, which provides you with visual and audio cues whenever specific parameters set by you are met. I'm especially a fan of Power Auras' sound feature, which allows you to play a sound when the aura is triggered. I personally have "Hadouken" from Street Fighter set up to warn me when Lava Burst is available for us. I also like the Wilhelm Scream for nine stacks of Fulmination. Power Auras can be daunting to set up for the first time, but don't get discouraged. If you need a hand, check out The Ultimate Shaman Auras.
Nameplates
Shaman AOE is well-known for being clunky and annoying to use. Fortunately, I found AOE a lot more manageable once I learned how to use the debuff widget on Tidy Plates/Threat Plates. This addon is a replacement for the default Blizzard nameplates, and I believe it does three things really well. First, it looks much cleaner than the default nameplates. Second, the nameplates' borders change color when mobs are aggroed to you, which gives you time to run away, ready a Thunderstorm, or Wind Shear them. Third, it gives you an easy way to monitor your Flame Shocks on multiple enemies. Combined with a mouseover macro, it helps to improve elemental AOE DPS significantly.

While not shaman-specific at all, GTFO is an addon that I recommend to every player in existence, regardless of their role. GTFO is a very simple addon that tells you when you're standing in the bad (or at least, it tells you when you're getting damaged, which often means you're in the fire). Just because we can ankh does not mean we should allow ourselves to die easily, and any second spent dead is a DPS loss. Nine times out of 10, you'll notice the fire yourself, but this addon exists for the one time in 10 that you don't.
Damage meters
The last UI element I'm recommending is a damage meter. I know I'll get flak for saying this (especially from raid leaders who know how distracting meters are mid-fight), but I do think that a meter is something every elemental shaman should have.
Fire Elemental Totem does now show up on other people's Recount or Skada. Especially now with our tier 12 two-piece bonus, this is a major flaw in the way combat meters work. As a result, if you're middle of the pack on your damage meter, it's very likely that you might be last on someone else's. For elemental shaman who are pugging, being last on DPS makes you an easy target for angry raid leaders looking for an excuse to kick someone. Since your general PUG doesn't upload to World of Logs, this is a pretty good idea to keep a combat log running, just so you have proof of your own performance in case you need to argue for it. However, please meter responsibly, and don't allow yourself to get tunnel vision on Skada mid-fight.

I'm slowly transitioning from resto to elemental. I'm a little unclear how often I should be using my earth shock in my rotation. Every chance I get, provided I don't need to refresh flame shock?
Or should I hold off for fulmination procs?
That one Joey Aug 20th 2011 9:21PM
Only earth shock for fulmination procs and flame shock to renew the dot. If you dont have fulmination procced or flameshock dot needing reapplied, you just cast your fillers (lava burst -> lightning bolt)
My priority for elemental is fulmination > flame shock re-dot > lava burst > lightning bolt
cyanea85 Aug 20th 2011 9:57PM
Hold off for Fulmination, but watch your Flame Shock duration. If it's less than six seconds, don't Earth Shock and reapply Flame. Some kind of debuff timer is a great help for this.

fulmination isn't worth it until you have at least 7 or 8 stacks. Even then it does not beat out Lava Burst (assuming flame shock is on target of course). Since it shares a cooldown with flame shock, you don't want to cast it during the last 6 seconds of that.
Basically, if you don't have a full 9 and flame shock has more than 8 seconds (I like to pack in a couple extra seconds to make sure I don't risk dropping it), then you should not cast Earth Shock. If you have more than 7 stacks, and flame shock only has 8 seconds, then a quick ES to clear stacks is still a dps gain over getting stuck with 9 stacks waiting for ES to be ready again after FS refresh.
In AOE situations, FS other mobs on cd provided primary target never drops, and only ES at 9 stacks. Fire Nova actually becomes worth it once FS is on 3 or more mobs.
If there is any doubt or hesitation, then just wait for 9 stacks and only fire when FS has plenty of time. That's better than letting FS die, missing a lava burst, or casting ES too soon over lightning bolt. It's not good enough to stress over.

Thanks for the tips everyone! :)

Only cast earth shock if you have 7-9 charges and flame shock won't need to be refreshed in the next 6 seconds. TotemTimers is great for showing you how much time flame shock has left and your charges of lightning shield (as well as other things).
Also, flame shock and lava burst should be higher up the priority than earth shock/fulmination.

Never, ever, ever use Earth Shock without at least 7 orbs on Lightning Shield. I usually only do it when I get the graphical prompt since I know it'll provide maximum damage.

My favorite Elemental add on is Elementarist. It pretty much takes all the guess work out of which spell to use and when. Try it out..I'm sure you'll like it as much as I do. It has helped me out with my rotation/priority tremendously.

A couple of questions:
At the moment, I'm just using the auras for fulmination and lava surge that TotemTimers has. Would there be an advantage for me to switch to Power Auras for that kind of thing? Does it just do them better, louder, and bigger?
I've seen people recommend things like SexyCooldowns and EventHorizon. I've tried them briefly and found them to be a bit of an information overload. Maybe I'm using them wrong, or trying to get the wrong thing from them. Again, could they be useful to me?
Is Threat Plates better than the built in ones in Tidy Plates? Does it show me something extra or just look nicer?
Anyway, thanks for this. Already using a few of these addons, but I'm going to give some that I hadn't heard of a try. Also, you have the Totem Talk: Enhancement thing at the bottom.

Power aura is a huge addon to ahve, and if used correctly it's great.
It's a bit of a learning curve, however on the WoW forums there is an ele guide that gives you a starter power aura

Recount now shows fire elemental damage for other people's recount now.
Also DBM is much better than GTFO, and a bartender/tukui/dominoes addon is pretty essential too. No reason to clutter up space.
And mini-rant about addons:
Addons are essential to enhancing your performancec, even if some people don't want to use them the default blizzard UI/mechanics is very underwhelming, and it takes a ton of work to bring it up to par to be comparable to a player with addons.
I meet players all the time that say "Only noobs need addons to play" or "I do great without addons" and I find that they do nerfed normal content, and see half of the current content. I've yet to see a player that runs addon-free do heroic raiding content (and succeed). Addons are good. It takes time to work into them, but it is worth it.
connor.carleton Aug 20th 2011 11:02PM
I can't believe I forgot this one but Power Auras is a HUGE addon to have for elemental.
The rotation isn't hard, but tracking everything is.

Sorry for the very late reply- I have no internet access at home currently and my "smart" phone kept losing my replies as I tried to post them.
I echo your feelings about addons, really. As a raid leader, I wouldn't let people raid if they didn't have some addons, particularly boss mods (which I find compliment GTFO less than it being an either/or thing). That said, as a writer, I understand people have differing opinions, and that they're not all doing the same things that I am, so I try to respect that!
As for recount, I'm sorry! It wasn't doing that when I was last able to play with internet, but I'll check it out once Verizon sets it up for me. Also, I definitely agree with Dominoes being a necessity, at least for me.

Shaman friend and Tidy plates are the only ones I use from this list, I've tried the others at various points but they just didn't bring anything I actually felt I needed.
Shaman friend however is very good, especially when doing pugs and raiding. I've found more of my raid group jumping into spirit link totem since getting SF :)
Same with Mana Tide, Other healers actually run to me when they see the /Y broadcast. ^_^!!

Both Recount and Skada have been updated to show Fire Elementals for each shaman.
Josh Myers Aug 21st 2011 1:04AM
Really? My internet has been out for about a week and a half, but before that my updated Skada was not showing Fire Ele damage for anyone but me. If that's been changed in the past 10 days, awesome!
Nessy Aug 21st 2011 9:16AM
Yeah, I have a feeling it does show Fire Ele damage for others now. But a lot of people don't seem to update their addons regularly so still have an earlier, non Fire Ele friendly version.
