The Queue: Attunement was awesome

On today's podcast, you can hear about the attunement required in the old The Burning Crusade expansion. Some people hate it with a passion, but you know what? I loved it. It was hard, it was an accomplishment, and you were set apart when you could just enter the raids.
Alas, those days are over.
For a reference, look at the attunement chart over on Wowpedia.
Krazy asked:
Did Blizzard ever release a design philosophy change as to why mobs no longer drop the highest level healing and mana potions?
You know, I've never thought of this before, but I've never seen one ...
Blizzard hasn't said anything on the subject, and this would be a great question to ask the devs at BlizzCon. It'd lead to a deeper understanding of itemization and buffs theory with Blizzard.
My guess is that Blizzard wanted to build up the alchemy profession more than anything, but I don't have any source for that (other than their wanting to give professions more love in general).
Tommb asked:
Will my death knight be able to wear the paladin judgement Set vis transmogrification?
No, you must be able to wear the gear before you can transmogrify gear to look like it. Since the judgment set has a paladin class restriction, and your death knight can't equip paladin class-restricted gear, he can't use it via transmogrification.
Fallemwarrior asked:
Any word if mainhand items will Xmorg with one hand items?
We've been told there'll be restrictions that only allow main-hand items to be transmogrified to main-hand items, and one-hand items to other one-hand items.
But all that can change. The best thing to do is to just wait for the PTR, pay attention to what you're seeing on sites like WoW Insider, and then see where things fall.
Mcdreamy asked:
Is anyone else having trouble with an unresponsive script on the WoW Insider pages causing the page to load eternally? The article, comments, and sidebars load, but Firefox never actually finishes the loading.
I've looked into this and I'm not seeing anything, so it might be something on your system or network that's causing the problem. If you're at an office, chances are there's thing blocking part of the internet, and that could be an issue here. If someone has more information, I'll happily forward it along and get it fixed.
That being said ... we're due for a redesign soon, so any issues people are having should be going away. And that's soon as in soon™.

You know, I never really looked at the art work of the Judgement set close-up - I always thought it was a neat set, but nothing really special. Now that I see it in full detail on wowpedia, damn that is a really awesome set of armor. And the purple is definitely befitting of a "corrupted paladin."

The major problem with attunement was that it rewarded the high-end guilds. Slower-progressing guilds might take months to down Vaj (I know I spelled that wrong) and Kael. In the meantime, top guilds on servers were in BT. At some point, people jump ship and head to the top guilds, who spend a night or so to get the new people attuned, and move on.
It didn't help that BT was available almost from the outset. With the way content is tiered now, more relaxed guilds have a better chance at catching up to the big boys before the next wave of raids hits. They get there slower, but they start every tier on relatively equal footing. The high-end guys can do heroics, of course, but there's not the feeling of "I need to run Kara AGAIN for the 9th straight month because I can't make headway in TK or SSC."
Overall, I like the changes. I do miss attunement for the simple fact that it took a bit of work to raid and that felt right, but I don't miss having to wait for someone outside the door because they don't have the key.

I'm wondering if attunements will be re-introduced with account-wide Achievements.
The Dewd Aug 23rd 2011 11:16AM
Jimson, I think you nailed it with this post.
I am in, and always have been in, a small guild. We ran Kara for months on end because it was all we had but once we had it down pat, we started rotating alts in, etc. We didn't do the other attunements because, well, we couldn't. By time we found another guild to partner up with for T5 content, the really was no attunement to speak of - you just walked into wherever.
That having been said I liked the fact that in Wrath we could "keep up" with the big boys because when a new tier came out, we all started on the same level. I assume the same for Cata but we lost some folks and had to retool for T11. I miss having the quests to do (eg: Ony) but I don't miss being FORCED to do them.
Socialcockroach Aug 23rd 2011 11:25AM
Another thing was alts; it was a pain in the butt to get all your raid-level alts attuned for everything.

Anyone else not getting the transmog fever?
I for once don't find it such a great feature, i will be using it very scarcely, maybe with to replace a shield or an ugly weapon, but i won't be replacing any of my current tier pieces. As much as i love warrior tier 4 and tier 10, using the latest tier is not only paying respect to the art department that designed it, but also an instant recognition of my accomplishments in the current raid tier.
My eyes will bleed with the upcoming invasion of paladins in Judgement and priest in Absolution. Those are cool yeah, but also old. As in i got tired of seeing them when they were the current tier, i'll sure as hell be tired of seeing them now.
ziggler Aug 23rd 2011 11:14AM
Im with you on that.
Its cool but it really isnt a groundbreaking feature and, tbh, a lot of old tier gear looks kinda "unfinished" compared to current gear.
(the invasion of dk's wearing their starter gear will also get kinda annoying)
Jimson Aug 23rd 2011 11:18AM
I was more excited about it before they said you had to have the old item in hand to t-mog it. Not getting pumped to go farm old content to replace stuff I deleted.
The other downside is the raft of questions that follow the pattern of "I play A/B/C class, what is the best set to appear X/Y/Z?"
Revnah Aug 23rd 2011 11:24AM
I couldn't agree more! I honestly don't think I'll use the feature at all. I am proud of my current gear. I don't care if it looks ugly, the point is not how it looks, the point is its stats and what I had to accomplish to obtain said gear. I'll always be proud to show it off!
But, as I stated before, I'm happy for all those folks who can't wait to transmog their stuff. Some of my guildies are excited like little kids, and more power to them :-)
mem0ryburn Aug 23rd 2011 11:24AM
Then don't use it. The point of xmog'ing won't be to have all pallies in Judgement sets, it's to change things up, make it more interesting, and allow long sought after customization. If you dig current tier then bully for you! You get to save a few hundred gold that I'm going to have to part with.
I for one am just really digging the idea of making my epic hammer look like a 2x4 with a nail in it.
Namy Aug 23rd 2011 11:28AM
The artists worked hard at the time on the old tiers too, so I think it's great for them that people will be running about in all the old gear again. Some people might not have been playing in vanilla and BC so they wont have seen these awesome tiers. Bring them back I say!
Everyone will run out and grab their favourite tier at the beginning no doubt but I think you'll see more diversity as time goes on. At the moment every other pre-raid mage looks exactly like me gear wise. After the patch i'm going to mix and match into something I like so the sight of all those troll geared mages won't make your eyes bleed ;)
Amanda A. Aug 23rd 2011 11:31AM
I think you'll see more creativity than you expect. I'm farming non-tier outfits for both my mains- a heroic DK set from ToC5 and Frozen Halls and a steampunkish engineer set for my paladin featuring a green armor set, an engineer crafted shield if I can get the schematic to drop, and a ToC10 mace.
(I just wish my DK could use his rp armor, but it has a couple of mail pieces and cloth shoulders. Looks like plate, though, or close enough.)
MattKrotzer Aug 23rd 2011 11:37AM
I think it's potentially great, so long as the pricing isn't excessive. It'll see more use than the barber shops, certainly.
Great bit of customization. I just hope they don't screw it up by overcharging us in-game to use it.
Wraithanne Aug 23rd 2011 11:39AM
The 3 pieces of the Priest set I picked up in MC last night should tell you how geeked I am for this. Now if I could just get the Aurastone Hammer to drop again...
ravyncat Aug 23rd 2011 11:40AM
I am excited because I don't raid or do dungeons at all. I have no status to show because I don't have any tier sets. All my characters are stuck in mostly ugly green or blue quest gear that does not match, or if it does match is still ugly.
I am happy to know I can finally dress my kids in clothes that don't suck. And I can use weapons that look cool instead of the 318 greens I have from leveling to 85.
Amaxe Aug 23rd 2011 11:45AM
I was interested solely because one dungeon set had a simple elegance to it I thought would look good on my mage. The dungeon sets are no longer available so I don't see any other "have to have."
maybe the Dark iron rifle for my hunter for a retro look, though that means getting the ore and sending my shaman down there to remake it. It's hardly difficult. Merely time consuming to find the ores
meringue Aug 23rd 2011 11:51AM
I am excited for transmogrification because I have a raiding feral druid main and a tier behind tankadin alt, and finally they won't have to take the best stat pieces while looking like they got dressed in the dark.
droknar Aug 23rd 2011 11:56AM
The whole system is a lesson in subjectivity. It's going to give everyone the ability to 'mostly' look how they want to look. Some people's eyes bleed when they see the judgement armor. Others envied those that had it back in classic/tbc and are trying to get their own set. I'm currently trying to get the judgement set for my pally and only need the eye of Rag to drop for Sulfuras, if for no other reason that the whole set I find to be one of the most gorgeous sets in WoW. I'm also farming the purple judgement set for my DK because I think it might look decent on him (still not sold on it).
I've been looking at RP clothing sites that show lots of different sets available, some are obscure world drop boe sets, others crafted.
There's no way they'd charge the prices they showed in the preview. Way too many players would be going ballistic on the forums. I'd bet that it's going to be the same cost to transmog, maybe a little more, as it would to reforge the item.
The bottom line is that there is a world of gear out there, a world of beautiful weapons and armor that are never seen because people are always wearing the latest and greatest they can get. I would love for that gear to be seen, enjoyed, even loved by some, rather than leveled through and vendored.
Grovinofdarkhour Aug 23rd 2011 12:19PM
Mostly I like the look of my gear just fine. I really only have one thing I'm sure I'm gonna Trans Am, and that's my http://www.wowhead.com/item=71366 . It's stupid looking, and sounds like a gun. So I'm going old school and skinning it with http://www.wowhead.com/item=62159#screenshots .
Look out... bears.
Bynde Aug 23rd 2011 12:27PM
Well, it will be better than some useless 'dance studio', but I'm not catching Transmorg fever, either.
