Regarding version numbering: WoW hardly sets a record for a "large" second number in the version number (1.12.2) -- the old Second Life viewer got up to version 1.23.5 (5190) before Linden Lab switched all development to the 2.x viewer. There are probably other programs that have had enough incremental changes to push that second number even higher.
That said, I /do/ wonder why Blizzard skipped some patch numbers from 1.0 to the present, particularly in 3.x and 4.x. (Patch list: http://www.wowpedia.org/Template:Patches )
