Breakfast Topic: Your WoW elevator speech

Sure, there are more than 10 million people who play the game, but there are even more people who don't play it and may have little to no idea of what it's about. So let's say you meet one of those people, and the topic of your WoW playing comes up. Maybe they say, "Oh, I've never heard of that game. What's it like?" How do you respond?
Here's my first try at a WoW elevator speech:
"World of Warcraft is a game in which people of all ages and walks of life from all over the world come together to socialize while testing their skill against each other and a computer by fighting monsters in a medieval fantasy world."
It's short and rough, of course, but sometimes that's the point of an elevator speech. What about you? What's your WoW elevator speech?

"World of Warcraft is where my college GPA went."

but in all seriousness, I guess;
"WoW is a Massive Multiplater Online Game in which people choose a faction of their liking to participate in either slaying huge monsters that follow the main plot of the game, or to pit their skills in combat against other players over the internet, in a unique fantasy setting!"

"You kill internet dragons."

I say something like: "Imagine a fantasy world, like Tolkien's Middle Earth, an entire universe with countries and continents, fantastic animals, and different races and their alliances and conflicts. And now imagine that instead of just reading about it, you actually participate in the story, you walk around in it and go on quests and join together with others to fight evil monsters."

Comparing Azeroth to Middle Earth is how I explained WoW to my parents. They were huge LotR nerds when they were my age. Because I play Horde, I had to point out that orcs and trolls have little to nothing in common with those in LotR. Then again, the elves are quite different as well.

World of Warcraft is an experiment in social dynamics. Take social media like Facebook, add a veneer of Fantasy to it, throw in sports in the form of raids and battlegrounds, sprinkle in IM via chat channels, and you have WoW.

Veneer! *takes a swig of Ballantine*

Everything is made better by a "Frasier" reference.

@Ballantine: Pass that beer, it's been a long day!

It's not quite what you asked, but in game elevator talk (to pass the time with a stranger on a boat or something) I tend to tell lower level players something useful. Like drinking alcoholic drinks reduces the level of mobs, often helping you to solo harder content, like elites.
Sleutel Aug 24th 2011 8:37AM
Does alcohol actually affect level-related calculations, or only the display? (Meaning chance to hit and crit, chance to be crit, etc.)

Or maybe it's ME that's the dumb one. Now I'm confused.
Irem Aug 24th 2011 9:12AM
@Sleutel
It only affects the display. Because your character is drunk, their judgment is impaired (i.e. "I can take 'im! *hic* He's only level 5!").
gewalt Aug 24th 2011 10:22AM
omg another deluded fool, spreading delusional advice that makes no sense at all.
tibbelkrunk Aug 24th 2011 8:24AM
I think you have room for another sentence or two.
I'd do something like:
"World of Warcraft is an virtual online world in which each player takes on the role of an adventurer aspiring to save the world from the villains that threaten it. With each battle, characters grow stronger, developing alliances and banding together with other players to vanquish dragons and demons... and sometimes each other!"
Jaq Aug 24th 2011 8:29AM
That image is making me imagine giving an elevator speech on one of the elevators in the game. Which in BWD would likely end with "and it's pretty fun OH CRAP I'M DEAD!"
Kurtis Aug 24th 2011 8:30AM
World of Warcraft is a communication device used the world over where people can come together to bitch about movies, share Chuck Norris jokes and pretend to kill dragons to steal their loot.
(With apologies to J&SB)

It's virtual place I can go and kill things so I don't go postal at work. :)
