Couple years back, we planned a big summer vacation to finally get to see Key West. Then some major hurricane or other was headed straight for the Keys two days before we were set to fly. Major Hotel Chain X informed us that once you're within the 72-hour window they can only give refunds if an actual evacuation is declared for the Keys, but we were free to transfer our reservation to any of their other properties. That was how we found the idyllic gulfside paradise of North Reddington Beach, FL, just outside Tampa. (No, really. If there comes a point where you don't give a rat's ass about sightseeing or culture or foreign languages or exotic foods and you just wanna lie on a beach for a weekend, it's perfect.)Still haven't seen Key West, though - and yes, the hurricane changed direction, weakened to a tropical storm, and didn't pass within 100 miles of the Keys.
