Regarding promises/threats and sticking to them...
One of the raid leaders I used to play with had an excellent way of dealing with low dps. I just switched from my holy paladin to enhancement shaman and wanted in on the raids, but he told me to improve before I could get a spot. He gave me 2 weeks, with the promise that if I'd improved enough by then, being able to show high sustained dps, he'd bring me on the next raid and hand me any gear I'd be eligible for.
Keep in mind that most of the other raiders already had decent gear, so one night of drops wouldn't make much difference to them, where it could increase my own performance even further.
Good times :)
