WRUP: Why the ugly face?
Every week, just at the start of the weekend, we catch up with the WoW Insider staff and ask them, "What are you playing this week?" -- otherwise known as WRUP. Join us to see what we're up to in and out of game, and catch us in the comments to let us know what you're playing, too!
This past week, someone filed a complaint on the official forums about the WoW character models -- specifically the Orc -- not being up to Cataclysm standards. Ultimately, blue poster Nethaera responded to the thread:
orc needs (model) buffed
Who the heck are these people who would riot in the streets if they changed the original WoW character models? I mean, nostalgia is one thing, but have you ever looked at your character's hands? Or a Human male's face? Yikes.
This week, our WRUP is all about in-game models. In addition to the usual What are you playing? question, I asked our columnists: What in-game model would you most like to see retired and why?
Allison Robert (@AllisonRobert) This weekend it'll be Allie and Allie's Little Brother versus Hurricane Irene, which should be fun. As for new models -- dear God, will someone please replace the goddamn wyvern?
Anne Stickney (@Shadesogrey) I am spending my weekend hammering in the kitchen and doing my best not to break anything, including me. New models? Both male and female Orcs, male Humans, male Night Elves (they are so ridiculously lumpy in a Liefeld kinda way), and give female Trolls some more face options because everyone goes with the "pretty" one anyway. Oh, and Dwarf males. ...oh heck with it just update the polygon count on all vanilla models and smooth out all the harelips and strange muscles that shouldn't be -- BE/Draenei/Worgen/Goblin are fine.
Daniel Whitcomb (@danielwhitcomb) (gplus.to/danielwhitcomb) I'm only a couple rares away from Professor, so I'm definitely finishing that up. Also, still farming purple Judgement, though now I'm leaning toward the DK starting zone gear for my transmog set. As far as models, Human males, please. We look like shaved gorillas. It's even more of an insult with how awesome, say, human Arthas, or Kalec's human form, or Vrykul look. A close second is male Night Elves for looking like ungainly, flipper-handed freaks.
Fox Van Allen (@foxvanallen) (gplus.to/foxvanallen) I've spent this past week dogsitting my parents' new puppy down here in New Jersey. It's super-adorable and really excited to be alive. I've been keeping busy over the past week despite my extended vacation state, and I'm going to keep that trend going into the weekend. I'll play a little bit of WoW, and then switch over to Zelda: Ocarina of Time if the hurricane cuts out power around here. I'll also do some more 8-bit art painting. Earlier this week: Boo (see right). This weekend, I'll be starting a nine-piece series from Mega Man 2.
Joe Perez (@Lodurzj) I will be playing some more League of Legends and preparing for my big move next week. Still have so much to pack up. As far as retiring models, I think there's a few extra skins for just about every race that looks very similar to other ones. Dwarf males for example have a couple skins that are almost identical in coloring, and some of the faces could be removed. I can only hope for an updated polygon count on the classic skins and maybe some embellishments, like facial tatoos for my Wildhammer shaman.
Josh Myers (@Elamqt) Still no internet, so I might finally break down and go buy a PS3 game and reap the benefits of having a roommate who plays console games. For remodeling, I'm a fan of seeing the environment touched up, with trees being my main concern.
Kelly Aarons (@Cadistra) Life is keeping me very busy, but I want to work on some achievements for WoW and keep playing Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom. New models would make me so happy! All of my female Tauren would really like some teeth. And better hair. And a rounder, more defined snout. And ...
Lisa Poisso (@emused) (gplus.to/lpoisso) This weekend, I'll be poking through all my old gear and figuring out who'll be wearing what old sets. Delicious! As for remodeling, I'm all for focusing on the overall polygon count, better Night Elf hands, and maybe a closer look at the flow of robes and capes -- things that I actually notice from behind while I'm playing my character.
Mat McCurley (@gomatgo) (gplus.to/gomatgo) Getting ready for Hurricane Irene by playing League of Legends and WoW. World of Warcraft is in desperate need of a model revamp, and more people would come back to the game for that than anything else Blizzard could do, period.
Matt Low (@Matticus) Deus Ex! I'm actually going to be taking a break from it. In fact, I'm going to be playing everything since by the time you all read this, I'll be in PAX! The Old Republic, Guild Wars 2, Counterstrike: Global Offensive, and League of Legends: Dominion will just be some of the games I'll be merrily feasting my gaming hands on.
Matt Walsh (@Rhidach) I've been talked into getting this game, Sword of the Stars, or something like that. Some kind of space 4X. Looks interesting. Otherwise, I'll be working on my Bastion New Game Plus and finishing up the achievements there. I just want Blizzard to fix male Blood Elf shoulders. Everything else is gravy.
Michael Gray (@writegray) (gplus.to/writegray/) This weekend, I'm getting ready for the new episode of Doctor Who and ... uh. Dodge the hurricane I guess. I think the boomkin model could use some love, I guess. In terms of the races, I think remodeling them would be almost a little masturbatory since most of the models are covered up by armor and gear anyway, so I'm not sure what model changes they could make that isn't just, yanno. New gear. And since people are clamoring to go back to old gear-looks anyway, I don't understand how remodeling the races will suddenly change the world. If we're doing real remodeling, I'd look to all the dated trees, mobs, and stuff like, not things that get model upgrades every tier anyway.
Robin Torres (@cosmiclaurel) (gplus.to/cosmiclaurel) Animal Crossing. I got The Spawn hooked and now I'm rehooked. We're playing the original GameCube version for now. Otherwise, I'll be looking for my sanity, since it seems to have gone missing these last two weeks before the start of school. As far as upgrading the looks of my characters, I want more customizations. I want scars and piercings and hair styles and noses and more face choices. I also would like body types. It doesn't have to be at the level of the superhero MMOs, but I would like to have at least some chance of my character not looking like hundreds of other characters.
The weekend is the perfect time to kick back, relax and enjoy some game time. Are you an achievement junkie? Can't get enough raiding? Rolling a new alt? Considering taking the leap into roleplaying? Whatever your favorite way to play World of Warcraft, let us know in the comments what you're playing this weekend!

We often see people request for model updates. This is something we'd definitely like to do at some point in time, but time is a very limited commodity for our art team. We also have to be very careful about what it means to "update" a model. We've made changes in the past to various characters and had some people be a bit upset that it was changed on them as they had made very specific choices about the look of their character. We try to be as sensitive as possible about these types of things.
Who the heck are these people who would riot in the streets if they changed the original WoW character models? I mean, nostalgia is one thing, but have you ever looked at your character's hands? Or a Human male's face? Yikes.

So their 'argument' is: 'we did something once and it sucked, so we are not doing it again'?
They are flat out LYING. Since when do they care about people raging when they want to change something in their game? They do that all the time, and people complain all the time and they keep changing things anyway. They simply do not WANT to commit major resources, yet do not want to admit it. In my opinion they deserve all the bile and snark they could get over this issue. Nobody likes being lied to.

And Tyler's??? I always look forward the little funny/cute paragraph you write for him!
Andrew Aug 27th 2011 1:24AM
I KNOW! I was worried there, because I was all like, "Is something wrong? Is Tyler okay, did something happen to him that no one knows about? But wait, Fox would know if Tyler's okay cause they're always talking...oh god, are they not talking anymore? Did something happen between them? Am I going to be deprived from living vicariously through their Twitter sarcasm forever???"
Then I realized Tyler's not talking to Fox because Fox moved back in with his parents like a noob, and Tyler's too embarrassed to be seen with him. And right well he should be! Now excuse me please, my mom's calling for more ice for her tonic and lime and I can't keep her waiting again. *scurries away*
Fox Van Allen Aug 27th 2011 10:02PM
The greatest insult to someone like Tyler is to just exclude him altogether.
Hairfish Aug 26th 2011 11:18PM
If they'd just bring the old vanilla races up to par with the Cataclysm races and new NPC models, I'd be dancin' naked on a mailbox.
Well, not really. But I'd be happy.
If my human male characters were built like Vrykul...I'd need psychological help, I'd be so happy.
mordred Aug 26th 2011 11:52PM
Orc - They are beautiful and one of the first races that drew me to Warcraft. Awesome, but there is a nice "older" male model with crazy gray eyes. Make them better and I would totally play that model.
Troll - Much love. My favorite race.
Belf - They are fine, but whatev.
Goblin - So cute!
Undead - Perfect.
Tauren - The males's hooves are a little ridonculous big, but otherwise, pretty good.
Human - Yikes.
Dwarves - I don't know why everyone is hating on male dwarves. They look awesome. Female dwarves I wanna love, but the boobs...yikes.
Gnome - Adorable.
Nelf - Blech. The males especially. A race I'm very intrigued in concept, but not execution.
Worgen - Pretty awesome.
Draenei - Much
mordred Aug 26th 2011 11:54PM
I meant to write Draenei - much beautiful, they are great.
Thomas Higgins Aug 26th 2011 11:55PM
Hmm, the contrast in quality of looks between the really rather good, though poodleish in a vague kinda way, Worgen in full-on rip-yer-lungs-out mode and its Human flip-side is rather jarring. Which is why I tend to keep all my Wolfs in puppy form where possible. The running animation is better in Wolf form as well. The Human side looks like it is running whilst constipated, or worse.
mordred Aug 26th 2011 11:55PM
Girls...support me here... Aesthetics are NOT to be underestimated!
Orrine Aug 27th 2011 7:52AM
Erm... Gays support you :)
RetPallyJil Aug 27th 2011 12:32AM
I'd be thrilled if they'd just get rid of the harelip on male humans.
AudreyR Aug 27th 2011 12:46AM
I'd just like my female orcs to not look like a clone army.
I guess you could say I chose my features with care. I carefully chose that one not-ugly face available to me.
perderedeus Aug 27th 2011 1:15AM
After the female worgen debacle, I'm convinced they have a poor business process when it comes to art assets. Skins, modeling, concept... it probably all flows to the same spot, and that person's taste is suspect. The worgen are effectively half a race, where the males look awesome and the females look like something normally left on the cutting room floor.
Evidently they have a hard time making a wolf-lady look sexy but also potentially wild... while retaining ties to the design style of the male worgen. And to that I say, damn, furry artists have been doing it for a while now. It's sorta their niche. Call one of them.
Then again, perhaps the art lead from Classic is still the lead today. Yeah, the guy who was ready to go live with the old version of female trolls and tauren. *shudder*
Thomas Higgins Aug 27th 2011 5:44AM
Yup, have to agree with you there, mate. Furry artists, and they are actually artists as well as colossal pervs would be the ideal choice to sort out the really piss poor Female Worgen models. Methinks that Blizz needs to hang around deviantart.com and 4chan a bit more and do some talent spotting.
MisterRik Aug 27th 2011 1:48AM
I'd like them to get rid of the corners on my human female toons' hips.
And the male night elf "walk" animation ... it, um, looks like the poor fella bent over and they shoved a broomstick up him and now he has to walk with it in place.
Jeff (Not that one ^ ) Aug 27th 2011 1:55AM
Doctor Who FTW!
That is all.
Philster043 Aug 27th 2011 2:15AM
I actually really like how my night elf druid looks like - he's got white Wolverine hair and sideburns and he just looks cool to me, but yeah the hands could use a bit resizing. I doubt that would bother anybody too much.
But I've always been happy with my main (a BE priest) - he is exactly as how I wanted him to look.
But I do think human models deserve the most attention of all. I've never been able to play any of my humans for long.
Dwarves - I think what needs attention there more than anything is just more cool, more exotic, hairdos, something I'm glad to see The Hobbit movies try to do. Agreed on the female dwarves' bodies needing work though.
Just got the 'Stargazer' title today after finally seeing all of Ulduar and coming one achievement short of getting the Rusty Proto-Drake. I can understand why it's so well-loved as a raid. The achievements themselves were ACTUALLY fun, not tedious. So I agree with everybody who said that Blizzard got that one raid right.
Philster043 Aug 27th 2011 2:16AM
I mean, 'Starcaller' - oops.
dmberreth Aug 27th 2011 2:26AM
I don't quite understand why Blizzard thinks they have to do away with the old models if they were to update. A game as old as EverQuest gives you the option to choose between their original character models, and the updated models they introduced with the Shadows of Luclin expansion.
A simple check box to decide what models you want turned on. Like the old trolls, and the new humans? Check, done. This way, you cater to people who rage and lament about the old models, or rage and lament about losing the old models, and even the ones in between who just don't care.
brain314 Aug 27th 2011 3:34AM
They updated Jaina's model.
Everybody hates the new Jaina model.
Lesson learned. Just put resources into other areas like transmogrification, because everybody loves transmogrification.
