The Care and Feeding of Warriors: Transmogging for the warrior

Frankly, I wrote a serious post this week about tanking that you may want to read. As a result of that post, however, and previous week's posts for this column that were fairly weighty, I find myself desperately wanting to shift gears. While considering a beginner's guide to PVP and a beginner's guide to leveling as DPS, I realized that I've played this game for years and collected a lot of gear over that time. With the announcement of transmogrification in patch 4.3, it's finally time to discuss a few truths.
- Warriors have had some of the best-looking gear in the game.
- We're finally going to be able to use whichever pieces of gear we want.
- I want to talk about sweet-looking gear.
Of course, the armor I chose to go along with the Whirlwind Axe in the opening picture is the incredibly revealing Jade Breastplate and other Jade pieces of plate armor. I chose it because, frankly, I'm disappointed in how it looks on a male. Why, you ask?

Now that we've covered how disappointingly clothed guys are in the Jade set, let's talk about sets and items I expect to see a lot of warriors in, starting with two-handers. I'm going to cover swords, axes and maces, since those are the most common warrior options; while we can use fists, daggers, polearms, and staves as well, those aren't usually itemized for us. And believe me, even limiting myself to swords, axes and maces ends up leaving me swimming in more good-looking options than I can possibly list here.
Two-handed swords
For two-handed sword options, these are some of my favorite models. Not all are going to be epics, and one is a green. Some are unique models while others share models, I'll link to the same model as where appropriate.
- Ashkandi, Greatsword of the Brotherhood
- Armageddon
- Zin'rokh, Destroyer of Worlds
- Heavy Copper Broadsword
- Cataclysm's Edge
- Glorenzelg, High Blade of the Silver Hand
- Twinblade of the Phoenix
- Typhoon
- Endbringer
- Dreadlord's Blade (It's a boat!)
- Apolyon, the Soul-Render
- Voldrethar, Dark Blade of Oblivion
- Zoid's Firelit Greatsword
- Blackblade of Shahram
- The Untamed Blade
- Runeblade of Baron Rivendare
- Despair
- Warmonger
- Barbarous Blade
- Relentless Scythe
- Sword of the Magistrate
- Jin'rokh, The Great Apocalypse (Note that both this sword and its shared model are currently not in game; hopefully the Darkmoon Faire revamp will fix that.)
- Lionheart Executioner (As far as I can tell, the BS trainers no longer teach how to make this sword or its predecessors, but if you already know the pattern, you can still make one.)
- Decimation (Sadly an Alliance-only model; Fleshrender is the Horde equivalent.)
- Obsidian Edged Blade (A later Ony revamp drop.)

One-handed swords
Sadly at the present time, legendaries are not intended to be eligible for transmogging, so no Thunderfury or Warglaives here. Still, there are quite a few beautiful swords. I'm extremely fond of quite a few older models here.
- Maladath, Runed Blade of the Black Flight
- Slayer of the Lifeless
- Dragonscale-Encrusted Longblade
- Hailstorm
- Blade of Infamy (matches warrior tier 5)
- The Sun Eater
- Renataki's Soul Slicer
- Quel'serrar
- Quel'delar, Cunning of the Shadows (This model also comes in a two-handed version.)
- Thrash Blade
- Hope Ender
- Talon of Azshara
- Broken Promise
- Bloodrazor
- The various Krol swords
- Lava Spine
- Bloodvenom Blade
- Blade of Savagery
- Skullforge Reaver
- Sword of Marshtide Watch (Alliance only)
- Cursed Felblade
- Legionnaire's Sword (Horde only)
- The Butcher
- King's Defender
- Fang of the Leviathan

Now that we covered swords, let's look at axes. First up, two-handers -- and remember the Whirlwind Axe and its look-alikes from before.
- Spinal Reaper (Pay special attention to Nightfall, as it's a lovely blood red color.)
- Drake Talon Cleaver
- Gorehowl
- Ethereun Nexus-Reaver
- Wrathful Gladiator's Decapitator
- Edge of Ruin
- Gravestone War Axe
- Axe of the Nexus-Kings
- Axe of the Gronn Lords
- Bryntroll, The Bone Arbiter
- Dual-Blade Butcher (Horde)/ Justicebringer (Alliance)
- Shadow's Edge (At this time the Legendary version will not be transmoggable, but this epic version should be)
- Dark Edge of Insanity
- Death's Bite
- Ravager
- Soul Cleaver
- Reaver of the Infinites
- Torn-Heart Axe of Battle
- Ramaladni's Blade of Culling
- Betrayer of Humanity
- Treant's Bane
- Shalug'doom, the Axe of Unmaking
- Worldcarver
- Fanged Axe
One-handed axes
Now let's take a look at one-handed axes. One weapon warriors should be on the lookout for is the Sickle of Unyielding Strength, a unique model from a quest line you'll most likely be able to solo in AQ-10 and -40. Since the item is warrior-only, only warriors will be able to use it for transmog purposes. There are so many excellent one-handed axe models, I know I'll be leaving your favorites out. Sorry about that. Here are the ones I like. (Please, in the case of the Eye of Purification, don't try and take this over a caster; just snag it if it's gonna get sharded.)
- Teldrassil Protector/Axe of the Sen'jin Protector
- Axe of Rinj
- Wicked Edge of the Planes (Again, no longer trainable but can be made if you already trained it)
- Raging Deathbringer
- The Harvester of Souls
- The Decapitator
- Crul'shorukh, Edge of Chaos
- Doom's Edge
- Bone Slicing Hatchet
- Havoc's Call, Blade of Lordaeron Kings
- Stellaris
- Rising Tide
- The Brutalizer
- Riftrent Waraxe
- Last Laugh
- Crul'korak, the Lightning's Arc
- Nighttime
- Axe of the Legion
- Dawn's Edge
- Amani Venom-Axe
- Fel-Edged Battleaxe
- Flurry Axe
- The Key
- Eye of Purification
Two-handed maces
Two-handed maces and I go back a long way. Luckily, while you can't use the original Sulfuras for transmogging, there's a new one that will be going on this list. So yay!
- Stormherald (Sadly, you can no longer learn to make this, but if you have one banked or know the recipe from BC days, you're in good shape.)
- Draconic Maul
- The Jawbone
- Cryptmaker
- Skullcracking Mace
- Inevitable Defeat
- Herald of Woe
- Warmaul of Infused Light
- The Unstoppable Force
- Catastrophe (Alliance)/Grievance (Horde)
- Forged Elementium Mindcrusher
- Demise
- Malown's Slam (same model as the old Whirlwind Warhammer)
- Taran Icebreaker
- Earthwarden
- Twig of the World Tree
- Sulfuras, The Extinguished Hand
- Ironsoul
- Frightskull Shaft
- World Breaker
- Torch of the Damned
- Mograine's Might
- Hammer of the Naaru
- Fist of Omokk
For one-handed maces, as one-handed swords, there are quite a few spellpower options. Please, please, please don't take them from people who are actually going to use the item's stats. Edited to add: yes, I somehow missed the recent clarification on main hand items. I'll fix this as soon as I get time to do so, and I apologize.
- Sand Polished Hammer
- Spineshatter
- Mace of Acrid Death
- Crystal Spire of Karabor
- Legacy of Thunder
- Twilight's Hammer
- Death Pyre Mace
- Stinging Viper
- Aledar's Battlestar
- Constellus
- Last Word
- Heartsmasher (Horde)/Heartcrusher (Alliance)
- Fist of Stone
- Tankard O'Terror
- The Hand of Antu'sul
- Rod of the Sun King
- Shockwave Truncheon
- Andoros, Fist of the Dragon King
- Mithrios, Bronzebeard's Legacy
- Swiftsteel Bludgeon
- Dragonstrike (Another crafted that can no longer be learned but still made if you already know the pattern.)
- Shiver
- Cookie's Tenderizer (note that this is the level 20 version)
Next week, I probably will switch gears again. I will come back and do armor sets, from greens to epics, but first I think we need to cover PVP. (I admit, I've been teasing you for weeks with the prospect of it.)

Loving these lists! My 2 warriors are doing to be looking insane come 4.3!
Warrior 1 - Male Draenei.
Onslaught T6 gear, May switch the helm out for a while and continue wearing the engineering goggles, they go with my mutton chops. Lucky enough to have Lionheart Executioner recipe so I will be running titans grip with 2 of these.
Warrior 2 - Female Human.
This char is prot and I kinda like the T10 Boar shoulders and they aren't really a hassle to obtain, as for a weapon.. I haven't decided yet.. Probably go with a Black icicle from the ICC 5 mans, I had those on my Shaman and liked the look.

Oh Oh! And how could I forget the Shiney shields from the Isle of Quel'danas rep vendor :D Getting one of those!
Aruhgulah Aug 27th 2011 11:09PM
You forgot the Spellfire Sword from Mennu in Slave Pens -- LIGHTSABER! (for all the techno-geek engineer warriors out there. Yeah, Gnome Chick With The Pink Pigtails. I'm looking at YOU.)

I have 2 smiths that trained with the old specializations. Weapons had 3,mace,sword and axe,I believe. I didn't take maces which is regrettable now,as they were really cool looking.
But for axes you had Bloodmoon and its' variants for 2h. Planar Edge for 1h. For swords,in addition to the Lionheart, you had the 1h Blazefury,Blazeguard and Fireguard. I think there were other Axes and Swords, but I didn't train em all at the time cause I could barely get the mats for the initial one, which was required for the upgrades. Regret that as well. Hindsight 20/20 etc. And what was the sword you could loot at Light's Hope from that chest when you hit exalted with Argent Dawn? Sorry for text wall!

You missed my absolute favorite two-hander sword: Manslayer of the Quiraji, http://www.wowhead.com/item=21492. Check out the second screenshot to see the real beauty. Yes, the outer area really is transparent, and the effect is gorgeous. I won the roll for that my first time in AQ20, and carried it happily through the rest of vanilla (which wasn't that long - I hit 60 only a few weeks before the 2.0 patch).

You'll notice Kalimdor's Revenge isn't on there either. (Why am I picking on myself? I have no idea.)
vendeurfrancais Aug 28th 2011 3:50AM
I am dismayed, no mention of the argent avenger or the spellfire longsword? you don't want to be a jedi knight? http://old.wowhead.com/item=13246

Glad this went over weapons, cause to be honest, love t12 warrior atm anyway!

2H Axes is missing The Blade of Harbingers http://www.wowhead.com/item=34891
Easy to obtain these days, but relatively unknown.
Dual-wielding this with T1 looks really nice on a female Tauren :)

It just occurred to me - transmogrifying is nearly Blizzard's ultimate cop-out. (I don't literally mean it, I know the community has been asking for this feature or some variation for a very, very long time.)
But seriously, with the bulk of their systems programmers and creative team moved over to Titan years ago, now they can send away a bunch of their artists and modelers as well. All they have to have left is terrain modelers and artists (and lets be honest, enough of WoW is rehashed terrain and textures that there can't be TOO many of them left)
Think about it - people are going to xmog their gear to look like how they want to look. And what are the odds that ANYTHING we're going to find in the next expansion looks cooler than EVERYthing we've seen for the last 6 years? Pretty small?
So honestly, Blizz could make the next raid drop 'variations on twill' for the next 15 levels, we would barely notice, as long as the stat budgets keep climbing, because we're just going to change it (back) into our beloved Jade Breastplate Bikini anyway....no?

Nice work Rossi, a lot of time you out inti this one, thanks
lordtrollingsworth Aug 28th 2011 11:47AM
Sadly I can't recall-or seem to find amongst the hundreds of models-the nice looking "set" I pulled together while leveling, shortly before BC. I remember the Molten pants or some such from the big rock guy at the beginning of BRC, and I'm sure the chestpiece came from somewhere in there too....but all my farming and scrolling WoWHead hasn't helped. Anyone got any ideas? I liked the "plain" but matching red-n-black molten aesthetic...
Azkadellia Sep 1st 2011 10:11AM
Lavacrest Leggings (http://www.wowhead.com/item=11802), and you want the full Hyperion set? (http://www.wowhead.com/search?q=Hyperion#.)
lordtrollingsworth Sep 1st 2011 2:55PM
Those are definitely the leggings, and most of the other pieces are either damn close or what I'm looking for-with the exception of the chest! I recall the chest wasn't a "showy" piece on a female space goat model. Any clue? All the rest of the stuff is now on my "find it" list, thank you so much.

It is obvious you love your warrior(s), by your ability to generate lists of beautiful weapons.

I really dig this two-handed sword: http://www.wowhead.com/item=28367
Teaspoon Aug 29th 2011 6:44AM
Ditto, and I said as much on page 3. I want to get it AND the one-hander with the same model (that's http://www.wowhead.com/item=27905 - the greatsword of horrid dreams from Murmur) so that I'm using that model regardless of which spec I'm playing.
Azkadellia Sep 1st 2011 10:33AM
Are there any Black/ dark grey plate boots that don't come up to the knees?
I'm looking for something to match the Enchanted Thorium Legs (http://www.wowhead.com/item=12619), but don't want to cover the plates over the shins.
