Updating existing character models isn't something we've been "waffling on." It's something we'd love to do, but the fact is the art team has finite resources. Updating the current playable race models to be more in-line with worgen and goblins requires much more than just increasing the poly count. There are more bone structures on the frames of newer models which allow for more animation options. In order to update older models, the wire frames have to change, which means a large number of existing animations and customizations/hairstyles would have to change.
It's much more of a massive overhaul than many players are anticipating. That isn't to say we don't want to do it, but it's difficult to justify delaying the creation of new art, models, and animations indefinitely to revamp old ones. And we have to make sure to do it in a way that doesn't give some players a feeling of detachment from the look they've had for almost seven years.

Ahh, I had not seen TIW for the past couple days and was beginning to miss it... :(
Adam Holisky Aug 29th 2011 9:30PM
Indeed. I don't think we'll be running it on the weekend, except perhaps during an expansion release or BlizzCon. There's just not enough happening on the weekend really.

For the curious, take a look at Zarhym's other reply in that blue post:
http://blue.mmo-champion.com/topic/195053/new-character-models
Our friendly neighborhood floating skull totally calls the bluff of someone who claims they can do the model redesigns. And it's awesome. ^_^
Arrohon Aug 29th 2011 9:30PM
That guy got owned SO badly. Gotta love Zarhym's sense of humor!
Tyler Caraway Aug 29th 2011 9:49PM
I like that the guy says it would only take a couple of months to do.
Yes, well, in a couple of months, the art team also has to render any new content that is being released as well such as new dungeons, raids, or zones. Not to mention all of the armor sets, weapons, and such that is also apart of that. They also have to constantly be working on the next expansion since the new projection is an expansion every year to year and a half. That means entirely new zones, potentially new races or new classes, and a slew of other things.
I have my gripes about things the art team should be doing too, but it isn't like they're sitting on their ass all day doing nothing. :\

@ Arrohon -
The way I see it, either that guy shuts up due to his inability to put up, or Blizzard gets a new artist with some mad skills. It's a win either way. ^_^
@ Mr. Caraway -
It's really sad how many people seem to think "If Blizzard isn't doing what *I* want them to do, they must not be doing anything!" or something similar. Is it that hard to realize that Blizzard's people determine on their own what they need to work on, and have good reasons for doing so? To say nothing of how damn much is involved just in running WoW, and it's not the company's only game. But no. People would rather cuss out Blizzard and threaten to quit the game over the one thing they want done, rather than actually consider the big picture. *eyeroll*
ShadowPriest Aug 30th 2011 9:49AM
Well it's is a game that people pay every month to play, so they would expect to see some progress and development on things people want.
"finite resources" really?!? I mean this is blizzard here, not some mom and pop operation. The only reason they have finite resources is because they don't invest in any. The models are 7 years old, if they "justify delaying the creation of new art, models, and animations indefinitely to revamp old ones" then holy crap, to revamp old models they need to stop production on everything? Do they all share one computer?
As one person said in that forum, what a better use of time? New models that are always seen and last for years or new art on corckasilks and boars or in new raids that no one will see after 6 months.
ust like transmog and raid finder, maybe after 3rd and 4th quarter earnings reports, we will see some progress made on it, as sad as that is.
BB Crisp Aug 30th 2011 3:09PM
@ShadowPriest
"'finite resources' really?!?"
Um...yes? Oh wait, they forgot to check the bottomless money pit! How silly of them. That's also where they store the watch that stops time, their spare designers, and the extra computer they save for moments just like this. Or maybe the things that you want aren't the same things that everybody else wants? Ya know what? I like raiding. Scrap transmogrification and pour some extra money into raids. Sound fair? No? Right. Because different people want different things. I'd certainly like updated character designs, but I could probably list dozens of things I'd like more than that. I accept the fact that with their limited resources™, Blizzard has to prioritize what they choose to work on. They're not just building this game for me. Understand that when you talk about the "things people want", you're only speaking for yourself.
Arrohon Aug 30th 2011 3:37PM
The art team is obviously a very busy branch. They have to design everything you'll see in WoW, Starcraft, Diablo, and Titan... at the same time. I do wish that wish the success they've had with WoW that they would hire more people for the art team. I imagine it's very hard to find people that can meet their quality standards though. Plus when you hire more people they need a boss. The current people in charge can only handle so many people. That means that Blizzard would need to hire more management too. It's a vicious cycle and there's no true way for Blizzard to know that they would profit.
Bapo Aug 29th 2011 9:25PM
Idk about delaying things indefinately, but yes, it would delay things for a long time.
And IF they ever update models (I'm looking at you, humans) I just hope they allow a free recustomization. Here's hoping they manage to pull it off in one of the next expansions.
dartheranul Aug 29th 2011 10:32PM
It's only natural that it's a tough job to re-model while you already have to do so much before next expantion - nay, next patch comes out. I'm sure as technology improves and/or the design team gets bigger, they will re-model things faster than Roar Runner can run.
Also, here's to hoping for scarier looking Forsaken.
Dale Aug 30th 2011 12:40AM
Just change the human faces, thats all I truly ask for!
pedge Aug 30th 2011 3:13AM
I have an idea for a topic. No it's not the right place but...instead of getting yourself a full classic tear for looks? Who is considering picking and choosing for their own unique look? That would be a great post as I am looking and have 3 unique sets already even though limits make it hard.
