Two Bosses Enter: Jan'alai vs. Corborus

Temple Guardian Anhuur's sweet, dulcet tones could not stand up to the might of Daakara, Zul'Aman's new leader sitting atop the Amani throne, once reserved for the one-armed Zul'jin. I guess Anhuur just wasn't ready for the bear/eagle combination that just annoys PUGs as much as it does the might of the Two Bosses Enter arena competitors.
This week, Zul'Aman favorite Jan'alai, avatar of the dragonhawk, goes up against PUG-stomper Corborus, the colossal gyreworm. Who will come out on top this week?

The rules of the ring
- The WoW Insider Ring is considered neutral territory, where both combatants are able to access their usual encounter mechanics and abilities. If you can't visualize it inside the squared circle, visualize it someplace else -- but you must take into consideration all of each bosses' abilities and mechanics.
- Assume that each opponent is intelligent and capable of strategic thinking.
- All of the competitors' abilities, including crowd control and other effects to which bosses are usually immune, work on their opponents (with apologies to considerations of lore on this point).
- Assume that the opponents share similar levels, health pools, and comparative overall damage output.
- Don't get caught up in gameplay mechanics and what actual players might do in each encounter.
- Don't neglect style, story, and scale. Everything is a factor; seeking balance is your goal as a spectator and judge.

Come, strangers. The spirit of the dragonhawk be hungry for worthy souls.
Jan'alai's fire attacks are deadly to those who just can't get out of the fire. His power comes from the spirit of the dragonhawk, as well as relying on the ferocity of dragonhawk hatchlings that can overwhelm unsuspecting foes.
Jan'alai's abilities include:
- Flame Breath
- Fire Bomb
- Jan'alai will summon Amani'shi Hatchers to spawn Dragonhawk Hatchlings, who cast Flame Buffet.

Seriously, guys, you have to move out of that ...
The mighty gyreworm, slayer of Millhouse Manastorm, and destroyer of PUGs in heroic Stonecore since Cataclysm's release, Corborus guards the interior of The Stonecore from trespassers. This massive worm is a fearful opponent for any combatant.
Corborus has the following abilities:
- Dampening Wave
- Crystal Barrage
- Corborus will submerge during the fight, spawning little crystal spider adds. Corborus will also lunge out of the ground, destroying all in his path.

The Trolls finally win one! The fearsome and multitalented Daakara earns his stripes in the ring against Temple Guardian Anhuur, breaking the Troll curse of totally falling flat on Two Bosses Enter. Daakara has some pretty big shoes to fill, since Zul'jin was a monster of a leader in Zul'Aman, but players seem to like and respect the guy, so good on him. A well-deserved win, in my opinion.
Commenter Vladiv got into the Troll spirit (get it?) with his summary of Daakara's impending victory:
'Dis one be a no brainer, mon. How can da great Draakara be losein' if he be INVINCIBLE? Besides he has friends in high places, I'm sure a swarm of Zandalari goons could take care of the snakes making the whole arena drown in blood. If that fails his buddies Fang and Claw can easily pull one or both of the switches. Let me tell you this guy has some tricks, such as his brother bear, also fire kill you just as quick.I'd have to agree. While Anhuur definitely has the switches and snakes working in his favor, especially for uncoordinated groups taking down his defenses, Daakara not only has multiple spirits that can fly faster and run harder than anything Anhuur would be expecting -- but the shield is the least of Daakara's worries.
Voludo's summary gets to go here just for the use of "primitive sunglasses." I would call them "Aviators, mon."
A buzzer sounds and awakens the guardian of the former temple of origination, Anhurr awakens his stone like body grinding against itself. Being a titanic construct his body is made of sandstone like material fashioned into a living form of a feline like centaur. As he gazes around the room he sees a room so familiar yet different. The layout of the room is almost exactly similar to his own chamber, but the it is just a reproduction lacking the titanic energy and humming machinations he has grown accustom too. His eyes narrowed as he spied an oddity a platform at the end of one end of the room. Like a green stain on the seemingly perfect stone floor is a tall humanoid with great tusks and green skin wearing primitive armor made of metal. "Ya' finally be awake Mon!" roared the green giant as he draws a distinctive look broad axe. "I be Daakara, and you be ma ticket ta freedom!", he says as he leaps from his platform and chants a strange dialect as four spirit animals appear in each corner of the room.
The stone guardian simply stood there silent whilst preparing for this intruders assault.
Daakara launched with a speed rare for something his size and slashed at the giant stone feline, sparks fly as stone meets metal making a deep gash in a once smooth form. Almost annoyed as a roar emits from his still lips and bellows "Beacons of light, bestow upon me your aegis!" as a shield of light envelope the guardian. After several failed attempts to smash the shield Daakara looks around the room seeing two switches at the bottom of the sand pits and grins an evil trollish grin " Der be no hidin' frome de eagle!" and turns to channel the might eagle spirit taking on the form of the great spirit and begins to create cyclones ripping and tearing at everything including the switches. As the winds grow stronger two cyclones on each side of the room envelope the switches causing them to shift. "No,NO!" yelled the great guardian as the light fades from him leaving him vulnerable once more.
Just as quickly as all this chaos transpired it stopped only for Anhuur to hear the voice of Daakara that made him turn around. "Got me some new tricks... like me brudda bear...." and Anhuur was bashed in the midsection by a gigantic bear causing his once pristine stone pecs to crack and shatter. "Now that i ave ya where I want ya let me introduce you to me buddy's fang an claw!" as he changed from a bear two a cat leaping to the guardian. The guardian fell with a sickening crash as three Lynx began ripping, tearing, and shredding the stone like it was soft as flesh until there was no midsection at all left! Daakara shifted back into troll form still grinning and turning to the exit as the spirit bear, dragonhawlk, lynx, and eagle faded from the room. Holding the head of the once guardian Anhuur as a trophy the troll let out one more sentence "All ya need to win be da....*puts on primitive sunglasses* bear nessesities!"

The battle begins!
Remember, Two Bosses Enter matchups are all about substance and style, not gameplay, mechanics, and numbers. Don't base your strategies on player tactics, which opponent has been easiest or most difficult for you personally, or the difficulty of each opponent relative to instance progression. Vote for the spirit of the battle as set forth above. Set aside differences in opponents' health pools, game level, and actual damage output. Absolutely no game mechanics nitpicking!

Jan'alai would burn the worm!
The Dewd Aug 29th 2011 2:23PM
This is a close one but I have to give it to Corborus. He (it?) can submerge to avoid fire and the crystal barrage seems a perfect foil for the hatchers and the eggs. Jan'alai is no idiot so he should be able to avoid standing in the wrong place (unlike some pugs I've seen).
I think this one goes to the final round, whatever that is, and we find out that Corobus' two sets of adds have slightly outdone Jan'alai's adds and after the judges vote, Corobus squeaks through.
Honestly, this is a GREAT matchup and could almost be a draw so whoever at WoW Insider paired them together.... EXCELLENT job.
Theresa Aug 29th 2011 2:25PM
Honestly I have to give this to Jan'alai. The crystal adds Corborus spawns on heroic would pose little thread against a boss with such powerful fire aoe, the 10k shadow AOE is nothing. and the burrow phase really is very avoidable.
MattKrotzer Aug 29th 2011 2:39PM
Avoidable if you can move quickly. Ever try to position a boss? They're not the most quickly-responding bunch.
Theresa Aug 29th 2011 7:36PM
I tank quite a bit - as bosses go Jan'alai is pretty mobile ;)

"Assume that each opponent is intelligent and capable of strategic thinking."
Wouldn't think one of those Gyroworms could think
Ilmyrn Aug 29th 2011 2:47PM
This. Jan'alai is one of his tribe's most experience and skilled hunters. Corborus is a big animal.
Ilmyrn Aug 29th 2011 2:46PM
This is a great matchup... if you're Jan'alai.
How is this even in debate? First up, Flamebreath will do heavy damage to Corborus, plus easily kill the crystal adds.
Even if the crystals kill the hatchers, that's just delaying the inevitable, especially if they don't hatch, Jan will hatch them all simultaneously himself, and as any tank can tell you, all the dragonhawks at once is FAR more dangerous than a few at a time. If all the hawks release together, that's game, set, and match right there.
Burrowing will probably hurt Jan at least the first time, but he's a smart guy and will quickly learn to move out of it. His hatchers may not be so quick on the uptake, and probably wouldn't survive one hit from it, but again, them dying could be just the edge Jan'alai needs. If the dragonhawks are out, it's anyone's guess whether or not they'll get caught in it.
Corborus' aoe doesn't even bear mentioning. Not really an issue for Jan'alai, though it could and probably would put a severe hurting on his dragonhawks, maybe killing them. Not before they've burned him to a crisp though.
The clincher, however, is Fire Bomb. Corborus is just too large. No matter how he twisted and turned, he'd be hit by probably four or five, if not more, bombs.
Jan'alai will be hurting when it's over, but he'll survive to fight another day. As for Corborus? Like any rock, put him under enough pressure and he crumbles.
GhostWhoWalks Aug 29th 2011 2:58PM
Jan'alai has this one in the bag. The two most damning aspects of Corborus' moveset, the adds summoned during his burrow phase and the exploding crystals, are best dealt with by AoE attacks. What is Jan'alai very proficient at? Summoning massive numbers of adds and, oh yeah, AOE.
DarkSpade Aug 29th 2011 3:07PM
Both of them would have no trouble at all with each others' adds so it's basically a one on one fight. I give the edge to Corborus. He's made of rock. I don't see Jan'alai's fire attacks doing much.
Will Aug 29th 2011 3:19PM
This is an interesting match, because both of these bosses are, within their respective tiers, the ones most likely to result in a wipe due to stupidity.
That being said, even after the troll heroic gear was released, I still wound up wiping in PuGs on Corborus with about the same frequency as Jan'alai. Therefore, Corborus gets the nod for being equally wipeable despite requiring a lower level of gear overall.
Krz Aug 29th 2011 3:45PM
All I can say is... I BURN YA NOW.
vegetto375 Aug 29th 2011 3:54PM
This fight is for the Trolls. Jan'alai is easyly one of the most anoying bosses in current heroics. The worm has never given me problems I can't remember ever wiping on him, now the trash leading upto him yea wipefest but him really easy. The fire damage that Jan'alai can dish out alone is massive and when you get the debuff from those firehawks is huge. This is the one fight where most group wipe and one of the main reasons why we are not riding on our pink bear yet.
Jan'alai has this one in the bag, but as we often see in TBE people like to root for the underdog or just vote for the one that they know should loose.
Salculd Aug 29th 2011 3:55PM
Death by slinky!
Lolz Aug 29th 2011 4:04PM
Jan'alai is doomed! Everyone knows ground and rock are resistant against fire and flying Types, and Jan'alai wil be taking X4 damage of Corborus atacks!
Average Joe Aug 29th 2011 5:09PM
And... we're done here.
Aukan Aug 30th 2011 8:55AM
A fight between two of the most hated bosses of all time.. no wonder they're seperated by only 16 votes right now! While Fire Bomb can certainly hurt if Coro isn't underground, I think people might be forgetting something- if Jan'alai pops all the adds at once at 25%, Coro only needs to go underground and those few OHKO burrows will kill all the adds without any hitch.
Also, the adds Coro spawns can't all be killed in a single breath.. they simply need to be spread out and they'll lose only 1/3 their number each time.
Shintakie10 Aug 30th 2011 11:06AM
Everyone seems to be forgettin Corborus has a trump card. His adds increase the damage someone takes by 25%. Either Jan'alai is goin to end up with the extra damage taken or his adds will and they'll die in a heartbeat. This fight easily goes to Corborus cause of that.
Pantro Aug 31st 2011 3:09PM
Musn't Corborus any kind of resistance against fire since he's made of stone ( except if the heat is so intense the stone will melt :p)
Pantro Aug 31st 2011 3:09PM
