I know Everquest was considered a massively successful cash cow of a MMORPG in it's day.
And when it was announced, Blizz said they were hoping to "eventually" match EQs best subscriber numbers.

At it's peak, EQ had 470k subs.

WoW subscriber base is still in excellent shape.
