The Light and How to Swing It: Leveling your holy paladin in Cataclysm
Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Light and How to Swing It for holy, protection and retribution paladins. Every Sunday, Chase Christian invites you to discuss the finer side of the paladin class: the holy specialization. Feel free to email me with any questions you want answered, like why paladins are so awesome.
Of the three roles in WoW, healers are the odd man out. While mages might call it damage and a warrior might call it threat, the fact is that DPSers and tanks both excel at hurting their opponents. One of my guildmates often refers to tanking as "just DPSing from the front." Healers, on the other hand, have nearly no offensive capabilities. The developers were nice enough to give every healer a cheap spell or two to spam to make us feel like we're contributing, but our DPS is abysmal. Healers, more than any other role, are pointless without a group to support.
Throughout the years, we've heard the legends of the shockadin -- the holy paladin build that doled out merciful healing and wrathful judgement in equal doses. While offensive builds for the holy tree have always been around, they've never been truly viable in any serious situation. I love the thought of Holy Shocking some hunter right off his high horse, but the numbers just don't add up.
Holy paladin resources
I like to use clcbpt to manage my holy paladin buffs, along with a few other addons and macros that make my life easier. Holy paladins use the new holy power system to build up holy power points and then release them via Word of Glory or Light of Dawn. We're a caster class, but we still wear plate armor, so we are fairly resilient to incoming damage and can usually survive more punishment than the other healers.
Wait until level 30
If you want to level a holy paladin, you're going to have to kill all of your mobs the slow way. While every paladin is identical until level 10, once you're able to choose your talent trees, you can choose to focus on the holy tree. Holy Shock, the tree's signature spell, actually does reasonable damage, but not nearly as much as the other two trees are capable of. Retribution and protection paladins gain access to valuable DPS spells and talents early on, while holy paladins are left in the dust.
Since you won't be able to pick up Denounce until level 31, you won't even be able to use Exorcism as your primary damage-dealer until then. There's really no advantage to leveling as a holy paladin until level 30. You'll be attacking mobs with your weapon since you don't have a valid nuke spell to cast, and you can easily heal your group through any dungeon while using a retribution or protection spec anyway.
Denounce and dual talent specializations
Once your paladin is level 30, the holy tree instantly becomes viable. You gain access to Denounce, which lets you chain-cast Exorcism all day long. More importantly, you can unlock your dual talent specialization, allowing you to switch between two different specs at any time. I suggest using a protection or retribution build for handling your normal questing and grinding, and then setting your secondary spec to a holy build to heal in dungeons.
Using the random Dngeon Finder, you can quickly and easily find groups for dungeons near your level. The Dungeon Finder is a great way to level up, as you can complete lucrative dungeon quests and obtain awesome gear from the bosses. Holy paladins are plenty potent enough to heal any of the leveling dungeons, and you can practice your healing skills in a relatively safe environment before taking your game to the big leagues. If you pick up Denounce, you can also contribute a bit of DPS when everyone is at full health.
Managing a low-level healer
The most important aspect of low-level healing is to manage your casting time wisely. As you're leveling up, you're still missing many of the cooldowns and advanced spells of a fully developed paladin. You'll be spending most of your time using our cheap heals, like Holy Light, Holy Shock, and Word of Glory. These three spells can handle nearly any situation you'll run into. Flash of Light is best reserved for emergency situations, and even Divine Light won't see much use outside of boss fights when you receive it at level 62. Holy paladins have always had simple healing spells augmented by a robust toolbox of secondary spells, but dungeons are typically so basic that our utility abilities aren't necessary.
Holy paladins leveling through the Dungeon Finder should also be cautious of their mana pool, as many tanks won't always stop to let you drink, and you never know when your group might accidentally pull an extra group. We can use our Seal of Insight and Judgement combo to regenerate mana during encounters, and Divine Plea can easily be mixed with a drink of water to fill your mana bar between pulls. Your mana pool should be fine if you stick to the basic heals, saving Flash of Light and Divine Light for emergency situations.
Your final goal will be to manage your buffs to ensure you're operating at peak efficiency. You need to keep Seal of Insight active at all times, as Judging to restore mana is important. When you use Judgement, you'll get a haste buff from Judgements of the Pure, so make sure you're judging at least every minute, if not more often. Beacon of Light becomes a valuable addition once you pick it up, as it makes handling AOE damage much simpler. You'll want to keep Beacon of Light active on someone at all times. The addons I mentioned earlier can make all of these tasks trivial.
Choosing holy paladin gear
One of the worst parts of leveling a holy paladin is the severe lack of plate gear with intellect on it. Once you pick up Plate Specialization, you'll want to be wearing all plate armor if you possibly can. Intellect is our primary stat, and every piece of gear we wear should have intellect on it somewhere. Since holy paladins aren't considered to be offensive casters, our gear will never have hit rating on it. Spirit, haste, and critical strike rating are the only secondary stats you'll find on our gear, and they're all similarly balanced. I find that crit and spirit are actually incredibly potent for the low-level healer, while haste tends to not make a very big difference. Either way, as long as you're wearing plate armor with intellect on it, you're good to go.
The other negative aspect to holy paladin leveling gear is that we can't use staves or daggers, which make up the vast majority of caster weapons we'll see while leveling. I recommend snagging a Devout Aurastone Hammer from the heirloom vendor if you have a high-level character already, as it resolves the weapon issue completely. Note that the holy paladin heirloom gear will look like mail armor at lower levels but will convert to plate armor once you learn the ability to wear plate armor.
The Light and How to Swing It: Holy helps holy paladins become the powerful healers we're destined to be. Find out just how masterful mastery healing can be, gear up with the latest gear, and learn how to PVP as a holy paladin.

I level using Holy. Its slow yes, but you don't die often, especially as a Holy Cow, you can pretty much take whatever is dished out and keep right on trucking.
cortney Sep 4th 2011 6:16PM
what holy paladin heirloom gear is there? All I can find for spell gear that seems to work for them is the mail spell casting set, the mythical pauldrons of the elements and the mystical vest of the elements -- unless you're referring to the heirloom pvp stuff.
Tom Sep 4th 2011 6:34PM
Pre-50, mail, leather, and cloth heirloom pieces are just fine. Really, though, if you pick up a Devout Aurastone Hammer you'll be fine even if you're otherwise naked.
Honestly, I'd suggest getting the Hammer and wearing the non-plate pieces even after 50. You'll miss out on the Plate Specialization bonus, but you really, truly don't need it, especially with that hammer. While leveling, 20% more XP is well worth losing 5% intellect when you're already a super-strong healer.

There are pvp heirloom Int plate shoulders...
Weaker than the mail but just saying.
zweitblom Sep 5th 2011 3:44AM
Well, it' just that the author of the article was referring to some type of gear which very clearly doesn't exist - which I find an odd mistake to make.
Chase Christian Sep 5th 2011 4:00AM
I used mail gear and the PVP shoulders. I agree that there needs to be more heirloom gear for holy paladins, but there is some.

"Once your paladin is level 30, the holy tree instantly becomes viable."
This is a bit misleading. Holy is "viable" for healing though dungeons as early as you can spec into it. What I think Chase really means is that Holy becomes a good choice for a spec at level 30, since Retribution and Protection are better suited to questing than Holy. And you'll definitely be questing - leveling only through RDF is a rough way to go.
"obtain awesome gear from the bosses."
This is also a bit misleading. By and large, gearing up doesn't matter until Cataclysm content. Whatever you pick up from questing is definitely good enough; any effort made towards getting specific boss drops in leveling dungeons is effort sorely misspent. Also, what he said about Holy gear being rare while questing holds true for dungeons.
Otherwise, yay Holy Paladins!
Sharlatan Sep 4th 2011 6:30PM
There is no PVE holy paladin healing gear....
You can get the mace, but after that, its mail if you want int armor or the plate pvp shoulders.
No shield, no offhand, no pve plate chest, shoulders or head. Though you can pick up the caster cloak.
Basically, you get screwed over by bliz for wanting to level as a healer.
perasitewow Sep 4th 2011 6:41PM
Wear the mail... it doesn't hurt anything, and heirloom gear is so OP as you level that mail will be more than sufficient. I actually leveled a holy pally wearing the cloth caster gear and did just fine.
GrandOldDuke Sep 4th 2011 7:48PM
I saw a guy in Stratholme levelling a paladin *tank* wearing the cloth caster gear- and he did just fine.
Heirlooms kinda make the game dumb.
shieryma Sep 4th 2011 6:45PM
Do you think paladins should have a ranged dps option?
Fletcher Sep 4th 2011 7:11PM
I'm going to say no - for one, it doesn't fit with the paladin theme at all, and for two it would be massively overpowered in PVP - imagine a mage in plate who can heal himself! Imagine trying to kill him!
Leave the smite spam to the priests.
Crispn Sep 4th 2011 7:12PM
How dare you, Paladins are protectors of the light, not wussies in dresses!
....wait
Diatenium Sep 4th 2011 9:43PM
I do believe holy paladins need -some- offensive utility for soloing and pvp, which has been more or less taken care of with denounce, although personally I think we need a few more seconds for our inquisition so as to have a functional offensive rotation involving holy power.
But as a ranged dps class entirely? I think not, feral druids are already a headache to balance and at least that can sorta be taken care of with different forms, something that paladins lack entirely.
shieryma Sep 4th 2011 8:22PM
They have the spirit->hit talent like the other healer/casters. Also, I believe healing plate is the only armor type in the game only used by a single spec.
Aticus Sep 5th 2011 12:16AM
I have a level 40 holy pally in heirloom mail gear. Just using holy shock, judge, and of course exorcism, I'm doing more damage than heirloomed mages, locks and the rest.
I had a rogue (in heirlooms) once who tried to kick me out of a 5man cause I was dpsing in holy. Then I showed recount and he shut right up :D.
Holy isn't viable for leveling? I laugh at you.
Chase Christian Sep 5th 2011 12:28AM
I leveled as holy too, but I'll tell you that 80-85 takes a LONG time. :(
Luke Sep 5th 2011 4:18AM
@ Chase
Unless you've already invested a lot of time or gold in one of the crafting professions, it's ridiculously OP just how fast you can level a character with a combination of mining + herbalism + archeology.
I'm not even kidding, it's not particularly investing game play but you will level FAST and by the end of it have a metric ton of materials you can sell or use to level the crafting profession of your choice. My "time played" was less than a day for 80-85 when Cataclysm launched and I don't think Blizz has nerfed those xp gains.
Wolfrunner Sep 5th 2011 1:08AM
I do dungeons on my non-heirloomed pally, on the front lines, using crusader strike, judgements, and holy shock.
Honestly, the feeling of using melee attacks to prep my heals (Crusader strike builds holy power for Word of Glory) is like nothing else in the game, and the knowledge that that will become obsolete as I level up . . . really sucks.
That said, with exorcisms, crusader strikes, and holy shocks, I do decent damage in dungeons and can utterly crush any mob while questing. Word of Glory is more than enough to keep most heirloomed tanks topped off, with the occasional shock or Holy Light sent their way. My Holy Paladin is in his 40s.
Raposa Sep 5th 2011 1:43AM
i agree with you there, this is the best thing that ever happened to holy paladins. being in the front line, using crusader strike to build holy power and punching mobs in the face for mana is awesome. with plate armor and protector of the innocent to get some free heals, it is totally viable.
i dont raid, but i do heal 5 mans like this at lvl 85 LIKE A BOSS
