Two Bosses Enter: Beauty vs. Zanzil
In Two Bosses Enter, WoW Insider's series of fantasy death matches, the bosses of World of Warcraft face off in the squared circle. Your vote determines who wins and claims the season title.
Wow. Wow. Last week's Two Bosses Enter matchup was incredibly close. At one point, both competitors were tied, with votes ticking up each side until the final day. When the poll finally closed, Jan'alai took the victory by onlythree apparently four votes. Four votes. Now, I don't know what this tells me. People must hate each of these bosses equally. Suffice it to say, this was an awesome matchup that went down to the wire. More excitement like that, please!
This week's matchup features two bosses that hearken back to the days of vanilla World of Warcraft -- the great corehound Beauty and her adorable litter face off against cauldron master Zanzil's voodoo trickery. Whose cuisine will reign supreme?
Follow along for the details of this week's matchup, as well as discussion on last week's match.
The rules of the ring

In Corner One: Beauty
Don't kill Runty. Don't kill Runty. Stop killing Runty. Everyone run back.
Beauty the corehound guards her litter of pups with the ferocity and determination only a mother could display. Runty, the quintessential runt of the litter, stands in the back of the room, the most protected offspring of the great corehound. Beauty's children and her own fire attacks and fears make her a worthy opponent for any band of adventurers or voodoo master.
Beauty brings to the table:
In Corner Two: Zanzil
Don't worry, Zanzil won't leave you dead for long ...
Zanzil the Outcast was once, well, outcast from Zul'Gurub and lived on the coast of Stranglethorn. During the new Cataclysm content, Zanzil is brought back into the fold by Jin'do and given a new home in the reclaimed Zul'Gurub to work on his cauldron magic. His potions are fearsome, and his voodoo magic is deadly.
Zanzil's abilities include:
Last Week's Winner: Jan'alai
This was a close match, ladies and gentlemen. Jan'alai's fiery disposition eventually won out against the great gyreworm Corborus for a second Troll victory in this tournament. I had pegged Jan'alai as the winner from the get-go, but the fight was closer than anyone could have expected. With the final tally, Jan'alai eked out a win by four votes.
Since it was so close, let's examine your comments from both perspectives.
The Dewd gave this one to Corborus:
As for who put the matchup together, give all of your kudos to Alex.
Finally, Ilmyrn's recount of the fight in favor of Jan'alai best sums up this encounter, in my mind:
The battle begins!
Remember, Two Bosses Enter matchups are all about substance and style, not gameplay, mechanics, and numbers. Don't base your strategies on player tactics, which opponent has been easiest or most difficult for you personally, or the difficulty of each opponent relative to instance progression. Vote for the spirit of the battle as set forth above. Set aside differences in opponents' health pools, game level, and actual damage output. Absolutely no game mechanics nitpicking!
Set aside the world order -- let the WoW Insider Ring determine who's the champion! Your votes determine the outcome in WoW Insider's series of fantasy deathmatches, Two Bosses Enter, One Boss Leaves.

The rules of the ring
- The WoW Insider Ring is considered neutral territory, where both combatants are able to access their usual encounter mechanics and abilities. If you can't visualize it inside the squared circle, visualize it someplace else -- but you must take into consideration all of each bosses' abilities and mechanics.
- Assume that each opponent is intelligent and capable of strategic thinking.
- All of the competitors' abilities, including crowd control and other effects to which bosses are usually immune, work on their opponents (with apologies to considerations of lore on this point).
- Assume that the opponents share similar levels, health pools, and comparative overall damage output.
- Don't get caught up in gameplay mechanics and what actual players might do in each encounter.
- Don't neglect style, story, and scale. Everything is a factor; seeking balance is your goal as a spectator and judge.

Don't kill Runty. Don't kill Runty. Stop killing Runty. Everyone run back.

Beauty's children and her own fire attacks and fears make her a worthy opponent for any band of adventurers or voodoo master.
Beauty brings to the table:
- Two of Beauty's three children, Buster, Lucky, and Spot, join the fight, drooling lava all over the arena and firing off their Little Big Flame Breath.
- Beauty charges far-away targets with Berserker Charge.
- Flamebreak causes fire damage and a knockback.
- Terrifying Roar
- Magma Spit
- If Runty dies, Beauty goes into an enrage.

His potions are fearsome, and his voodoo magic is deadly.
Zanzil's abilities include:
- Zanzil Fire
- Voodoo Bolt
- Terible Tonic
- Zanzil's Graveyard Gas requires a drink from the green cauldron.
- Zanzil's Resurrection Elixir (blue) will call forth a resurrected Zanzili Berserker, which can be frozen after a drink from the blue cauldron.
- Zanzil's Resurrection Elixir (red) will raise a cadre of Zanzili Zombies who swarm Zanzil's enemies, which can be AOEed down after a drink from the red cauldron.

This is a close one but I have to give it to Corborus. He (it?) can submerge to avoid fire and the crystal barrage seems a perfect foil for the hatchers and the eggs. Jan'alai is no idiot so he should be able to avoid standing in the wrong place (unlike some pugs I've seen).I like the way you think, The Dewd. Corborus' adds also explode, doing a good deal of damage, so I would think that Jan'alai's hatchlings wouldn't stand a chance. On the other hand, I agree with reader Theresa:
I think this one goes to the final round, whatever that is, and we find out that Corobus' two sets of adds have slightly outdone Jan'alai's adds and after the judges vote, Corobus squeaks through.
Honestly, this is a GREAT matchup and could almost be a draw so whoever at WoW Insider paired them together.... EXCELLENT job.
Honestly I have to give this to Jan'alai. The crystal adds Corborus spawns on heroic would pose little thread against a boss with such powerful fire aoe, the 10k shadow AOE is nothing. and the burrow phase really is very avoidable.Jan'alai's fire bombs go everywhere, and adds can't explode if they are already dead. Not to mention that Corborus' size works against him in this fight, in my mind -- too much gyreworm getting hit by too much stuff.
As for who put the matchup together, give all of your kudos to Alex.
Finally, Ilmyrn's recount of the fight in favor of Jan'alai best sums up this encounter, in my mind:
This is a great matchup... if you're Jan'alai.Great job in the comments, and thank you for all the votes that made this one of the closest matches ever on Two Bosses Enter. Stay tuned for more matchups, and vote for this week's winner.
How is this even in debate? First up, Flamebreath will do heavy damage to Corborus, plus easily kill the crystal adds.
Even if the crystals kill the hatchers, that's just delaying the inevitable, especially if they don't hatch, Jan will hatch them all simultaneously himself, and as any tank can tell you, all the dragonhawks at once is FAR more dangerous than a few at a time. If all the hawks release together, that's game, set, and match right there.
Burrowing will probably hurt Jan at least the first time, but he's a smart guy and will quickly learn to move out of it. His hatchers may not be so quick on the uptake, and probably wouldn't survive one hit from it, but again, them dying could be just the edge Jan'alai needs. If the dragonhawks are out, it's anyone's guess whether or not they'll get caught in it.
Corborus' aoe doesn't even bear mentioning. Not really an issue for Jan'alai, though it could and probably would put a severe hurting on his dragonhawks, maybe killing them. Not before they've burned him to a crisp though.
The clincher, however, is Fire Bomb. Corborus is just too large. No matter how he twisted and turned, he'd be hit by probably four or five, if not more, bombs.
Jan'alai will be hurting when it's over, but he'll survive to fight another day. As for Corborus? Like any rock, put him under enough pressure and he crumbles.

One of the abilities you need to use the cauldrons for will kill Runty and then Beauty will eat Zanzil's face.
Killik Sep 5th 2011 6:32PM
Except as noted below, the green gas does % health damage so Beauty would die slightly quicker than Runty. Probably better to have kept Runty dying out of the equation, as it makes this fight a matter of random chance.
Arrohon Sep 5th 2011 7:02PM
I never said which because any of the three could do it. The zombies would make quick work of him as would a berserker. Runty is quite weak so it wouldn't take long for him to die (he wouldn't be able to take more than a few hits from the berserker or have zombie aggro for more than a few seconds before he died).

If Beauty has taught me anything, it's that Corehund pups will eat ANYONE and ANYTHING they can get. I suspect a bunch o pups running around causing mayhem with Fire and Frost caudron alone will be the end of Zanzil.
Especially if his poison "accidently" kills Runty.
elili Sep 5th 2011 2:18PM
graveyard gas kills runty, game over
Andre Sep 5th 2011 2:28PM
Runty doesn't manage to reach the cauldron in time and dies to Graveyard Gas. Beauty mega-enrages, destroying Zanzil.
Ca9je Sep 5th 2011 2:36PM
Beauty stares down at the tiny troll, the flames on her back brighten and she begins to growl. Instinctivley her two pups Buster and Spot, charge forwards at Zanzil. Zazil laughs, as lobs a small vial at a seemingly dead troll beside him. The troll slowly rises, with a roar, it moves into action, grabbing both of the pups and snapping their necks faster than you can read this. Beauty roars, and starts using magma spit at zanzil at the troll. In her fury, she smashes all three of the cauldrons. Zanzil merely stands still cackling.
But enough is enough, thinks Zanzil. So he decides to test Beautys' lungs. In a flash the arena is covered in a green gas. Beauty starts to charge at the troll, however slowly comes to a halt at the trolls feet. The flames on the great beast are slowly extinguished, and with one final heaving breath she dies. Zanzil looks into the distance and spots the one they call Runty.
Zanzil walks over to the pup and gives it an almighty kick directly in the head. Inside Runtys head, its brain is shaken and something changes in his thought process. Suddenly he's not so passive. SUddenly he has a thirst for blood. Runty enrages, and starts to grow as big as his mother. Zanzil standing a meer foot away from it cowers in fear. And with one bite, its all over.
The moral of this story is that one day Runty will kill you.

Seems it's a difference of 4 votes now. Guess you either made a typo or someone went back and voted again, either to make you look bad or because they hadn't voted yet.
Mathew McCurley Sep 5th 2011 3:43PM
It was three throughout the time I wrote it and after I closed the poll. Not too happy about that.
GhostWhoWalks Sep 5th 2011 3:11PM
I'd say Zanzil has this one in the bag. Zanzil Fire will eat through the pups without much difficulty, and then all he has to do is summon a Berserker or two and let Beauty try and pick on someone her own size. If he holds off on using Graveyard Gas for long enough, it'll end up killing Beauty almost as quickly as it will Runty.
Cobalt Sep 5th 2011 3:39PM
If Zanzil is smart enough to cook up potions to revive the dead and do all sorts of crazy mind-control stuff, I think he'd be smart enough to know not to kill Runty. I think it's fair to grant that to him if we assume that Beauty & her children are smart enough to utilize the cauldrons once the time comes.
If both of the above are false, then it's simply a matter if Zanzil's berserkers and other adds, along with his attacks, are enough to kill Beauty before she mauls him to death.
The Dewd Sep 7th 2011 1:35AM
But are his zombies mindless enough to kill anything they see? I would think they'd be too stupid to avoid Runty - but if he's hidden off in the back they might never get to him because there's too much else to attack first. And what about the berserker - they're pretty random, too. Or the Zanzil fire accidentally hitting Runty and pulling him into the fight.
I think it comes down to one or two of the adds winding up killing Runty and enraging Beauty. If I'm Zanzil, I curse my draw in the bracket and hope for the best - and then wind up losing.
epiclulz Sep 5th 2011 4:10PM
Zanzil kills runty for the lulz and beauty wrecks his face.
Jabadabadana Sep 5th 2011 4:32PM
Graveyard Gas is as nasty as a Beauty enrage, except that Zanzil can keep using other abilities while it wipes out every living thing in the area.
I'll give the dogs enough intelligence to not stand in fire, easily, but not enough to understand how to use the cauldrons. Strategy for corehounds is going to be something like pack tactics, not environment tactics.
Another thing about the gas: It does % health damage. Under the assumption that most of his activity is focused on Beauty, Beauty will die from gas before Runty does, because runty will be at or almost full and Beauty wont.
Katherine Sep 5th 2011 4:34PM
Oh, Zanzil, Zanzil, how will you get yourself out of this mess?
Runty stays safely out of the arena during the fight, and comes running in when he hears Beauty's death rattle. He sniffs at her corpse, and curls up next to her with great fiery tears forming in his eyes. He was the runt of the litter, and everyone knew it, but he was safe while his mother was around to put the fear into people who threatened him. Now he would have to make his own way in the world, with noone to protect him from marauding adventurers blinded by their own greed.
Zanzil is packing up his cauldrons when he hears a whine. "What's this? Oh Zanzil, zanzil, you've forgotten about one of the pups! Don't worry, little Runty, Zanzil's got big plans for this one!" He reaches into his bag of tricks and carefully lobs a vial at Beauty. "Rise up! Zanzil's elixir gives you life!" As Beauty rises as a zombie, Zanzil straps his cauldrons to her back, and Runty starts peeing himself with joy. The puddle of fire burns a dent into the arena floor - let's see the magic brooms clean that one up! "Come along, little Runty," calls Zanzil, as he leads Beauty to the arena entrance. "You and Zanzil are going to be best of friends. You and your mother will make sure nobody laughs at Zanzil again."
There's a new corehound boss in Zul'Gurub. Zanzil, Beauty, and Runty (he's trying his hardest! He's almost ferocious!) are the new bane of cross-server pugs.
Katherine Sep 12th 2011 7:12PM
The funny thing is, I voted for Beauty.
Rai Sep 5th 2011 5:10PM
I'm not entirely sure how to write a thrilling write up of this fight, considering everyone's pointed out the whole "gas fills arena, gas kills Runty, Beauty enrages" thing.
For anyone who thinks the dogs wouldn't be smart enough to drink the cauldrons, read the Dungeon Journal - they joined the Twilight's Hammer in order to get revenge on Beauty's mate, Beast. They be smart doggies, mon.
Rai Sep 5th 2011 5:10PM
...FOR Beauty's mate, Beast. Otherwise that would be a pretty short fight.
Daniel Whitcomb Sep 5th 2011 7:14PM
If the dogs are smart enough to drink the cauldrons, wouldn't that mean Runty is smart enough to drink the poison cauldron?
Mathew McCurley Sep 5th 2011 8:40PM
Runty ain't right, Daniel.
