Two Bosses Enter: Beauty vs. Zanzil
In Two Bosses Enter, WoW Insider's series of fantasy death matches, the bosses of World of Warcraft face off in the squared circle. Your vote determines who wins and claims the season title.
Wow. Wow. Last week's Two Bosses Enter matchup was incredibly close. At one point, both competitors were tied, with votes ticking up each side until the final day. When the poll finally closed, Jan'alai took the victory by onlythree apparently four votes. Four votes. Now, I don't know what this tells me. People must hate each of these bosses equally. Suffice it to say, this was an awesome matchup that went down to the wire. More excitement like that, please!
This week's matchup features two bosses that hearken back to the days of vanilla World of Warcraft -- the great corehound Beauty and her adorable litter face off against cauldron master Zanzil's voodoo trickery. Whose cuisine will reign supreme?

The rules of the ring

In Corner One: Beauty
Don't kill Runty. Don't kill Runty. Stop killing Runty. Everyone run back.
Beauty the corehound guards her litter of pups with the ferocity and determination only a mother could display. Runty, the quintessential runt of the litter, stands in the back of the room, the most protected offspring of the great corehound. Beauty's children and her own fire attacks and fears make her a worthy opponent for any band of adventurers or voodoo master.
Beauty brings to the table:
In Corner Two: Zanzil
Don't worry, Zanzil won't leave you dead for long ...
Zanzil the Outcast was once, well, outcast from Zul'Gurub and lived on the coast of Stranglethorn. During the new Cataclysm content, Zanzil is brought back into the fold by Jin'do and given a new home in the reclaimed Zul'Gurub to work on his cauldron magic. His potions are fearsome, and his voodoo magic is deadly.
Zanzil's abilities include:
Last Week's Winner: Jan'alai
This was a close match, ladies and gentlemen. Jan'alai's fiery disposition eventually won out against the great gyreworm Corborus for a second Troll victory in this tournament. I had pegged Jan'alai as the winner from the get-go, but the fight was closer than anyone could have expected. With the final tally, Jan'alai eked out a win by four votes.
Since it was so close, let's examine your comments from both perspectives.
The Dewd gave this one to Corborus:
As for who put the matchup together, give all of your kudos to Alex.
Finally, Ilmyrn's recount of the fight in favor of Jan'alai best sums up this encounter, in my mind:
The battle begins!
Remember, Two Bosses Enter matchups are all about substance and style, not gameplay, mechanics, and numbers. Don't base your strategies on player tactics, which opponent has been easiest or most difficult for you personally, or the difficulty of each opponent relative to instance progression. Vote for the spirit of the battle as set forth above. Set aside differences in opponents' health pools, game level, and actual damage output. Absolutely no game mechanics nitpicking!
Set aside the world order -- let the WoW Insider Ring determine who's the champion! Your votes determine the outcome in WoW Insider's series of fantasy deathmatches, Two Bosses Enter, One Boss Leaves.

The rules of the ring
- The WoW Insider Ring is considered neutral territory, where both combatants are able to access their usual encounter mechanics and abilities. If you can't visualize it inside the squared circle, visualize it someplace else -- but you must take into consideration all of each bosses' abilities and mechanics.
- Assume that each opponent is intelligent and capable of strategic thinking.
- All of the competitors' abilities, including crowd control and other effects to which bosses are usually immune, work on their opponents (with apologies to considerations of lore on this point).
- Assume that the opponents share similar levels, health pools, and comparative overall damage output.
- Don't get caught up in gameplay mechanics and what actual players might do in each encounter.
- Don't neglect style, story, and scale. Everything is a factor; seeking balance is your goal as a spectator and judge.

Don't kill Runty. Don't kill Runty. Stop killing Runty. Everyone run back.

Beauty's children and her own fire attacks and fears make her a worthy opponent for any band of adventurers or voodoo master.
Beauty brings to the table:
- Two of Beauty's three children, Buster, Lucky, and Spot, join the fight, drooling lava all over the arena and firing off their Little Big Flame Breath.
- Beauty charges far-away targets with Berserker Charge.
- Flamebreak causes fire damage and a knockback.
- Terrifying Roar
- Magma Spit
- If Runty dies, Beauty goes into an enrage.

Zanzil's abilities include:
- Zanzil Fire
- Voodoo Bolt
- Terible Tonic
- Zanzil's Graveyard Gas requires a drink from the green cauldron.
- Zanzil's Resurrection Elixir (blue) will call forth a resurrected Zanzili Berserker, which can be frozen after a drink from the blue cauldron.
- Zanzil's Resurrection Elixir (red) will raise a cadre of Zanzili Zombies who swarm Zanzil's enemies, which can be AOEed down after a drink from the red cauldron.

This is a close one but I have to give it to Corborus. He (it?) can submerge to avoid fire and the crystal barrage seems a perfect foil for the hatchers and the eggs. Jan'alai is no idiot so he should be able to avoid standing in the wrong place (unlike some pugs I've seen).I like the way you think, The Dewd. Corborus' adds also explode, doing a good deal of damage, so I would think that Jan'alai's hatchlings wouldn't stand a chance. On the other hand, I agree with reader Theresa:
I think this one goes to the final round, whatever that is, and we find out that Corobus' two sets of adds have slightly outdone Jan'alai's adds and after the judges vote, Corobus squeaks through.
Honestly, this is a GREAT matchup and could almost be a draw so whoever at WoW Insider paired them together.... EXCELLENT job.
Honestly I have to give this to Jan'alai. The crystal adds Corborus spawns on heroic would pose little thread against a boss with such powerful fire aoe, the 10k shadow AOE is nothing. and the burrow phase really is very avoidable.Jan'alai's fire bombs go everywhere, and adds can't explode if they are already dead. Not to mention that Corborus' size works against him in this fight, in my mind -- too much gyreworm getting hit by too much stuff.
As for who put the matchup together, give all of your kudos to Alex.
Finally, Ilmyrn's recount of the fight in favor of Jan'alai best sums up this encounter, in my mind:
This is a great matchup... if you're Jan'alai.Great job in the comments, and thank you for all the votes that made this one of the closest matches ever on Two Bosses Enter. Stay tuned for more matchups, and vote for this week's winner.
How is this even in debate? First up, Flamebreath will do heavy damage to Corborus, plus easily kill the crystal adds.
Even if the crystals kill the hatchers, that's just delaying the inevitable, especially if they don't hatch, Jan will hatch them all simultaneously himself, and as any tank can tell you, all the dragonhawks at once is FAR more dangerous than a few at a time. If all the hawks release together, that's game, set, and match right there.
Burrowing will probably hurt Jan at least the first time, but he's a smart guy and will quickly learn to move out of it. His hatchers may not be so quick on the uptake, and probably wouldn't survive one hit from it, but again, them dying could be just the edge Jan'alai needs. If the dragonhawks are out, it's anyone's guess whether or not they'll get caught in it.
Corborus' aoe doesn't even bear mentioning. Not really an issue for Jan'alai, though it could and probably would put a severe hurting on his dragonhawks, maybe killing them. Not before they've burned him to a crisp though.
The clincher, however, is Fire Bomb. Corborus is just too large. No matter how he twisted and turned, he'd be hit by probably four or five, if not more, bombs.
Jan'alai will be hurting when it's over, but he'll survive to fight another day. As for Corborus? Like any rock, put him under enough pressure and he crumbles.

Yeah, but he's trying REALLY hard! lol

I think Zanzil has too many AoE abilities to NOT take Runty's death into the equation. (let alone the zombies/Dire Troll targeting Runty - a possibility) Also, as stated before, the dogs are cleaver, and will probably drink the right cauldrons to resist and deal with attacks when necessary.
Jabadabadana Sep 5th 2011 7:12PM
If the dogs are smart, then so is runty, and he wont get aoe'd down.
But if the dogs are that smart, we're back to a group of intelligent bosses as one boss, that will walk over every set of mechanics thrown at them by various bosses, ala the ToC champions and such.
dartheranul Sep 5th 2011 7:04PM
Still waiting for a decent story which doesn't pretty much involve Runty dying and Beauty eating Zanzil, after. That's like, the lamest thing you can do to picture this fight.
The fight will probably start off with the aggresive pups running for mr. Troll, who will shoot out a Zanzil Fire (awesome to DaSi as a DK, btw) at them. The pups will be smart enough to move out, concidering voodoo fire hurts. at this point, zanzil will resurrect some minions to keep the pups busy, while the which doctor goes for big momma with some voodoo bolts. Beauty will charge at Zanzil, knocking him back. The little pups will have dealt with the minions by this time, but right before that, Zanzil will have summoned a berserker to maul on the pups, effectively killing one before it drops itself. In the meanwhile Zanzil throws some more voodoo bolts at Beauty, while also throwing tonics at the pup the berserker isn't focusing on. Then he throws another zanzil fire, again at the remaining pup. Beauty will roar loudly at the loss of one of her pups, fearing zanzil momentarily, until the voodoo master realizes he should not fear the monster, and fills the room with gas. He then stays clear from the remaining pup, throwing tonics at it till the poison from the gas and bottle kill the last pup. Beauty will spit fire at Zanzil in the meantime, but Zanzil's constant moving allows him to avoid most of the fire balls. Now the pups are out of the way, Zanzil will go in for the kill, summoning a new horde of zombies, which throw themselves at Beauty. Beauty will roar again, trying to shake off the pests, but the undead are mindless, unfamilliar with the concept of fear. The zombies lash out at the beast, while the gas slowly weakens her. Preoccupied with the zombies, she will not see the Zanzil Fire rushing towards her. However, the fire continues behind her, hitting a last, sleeping pup, which quickly dies from the fire, as it was already weakened by the gas. Clearly this was the beast's favorite, as Beauty enrages, throwing off the zombies and killing them all with a combination of Flamebreak and Magma Spit. But before she can go for the witch doctor, she is suddenly attacked by her fallen pups. Zanzil had ressurected them as his own fiery, ferocious minions. With renewed (voodoo) strength, they attack the one they once called - or barked, rather - mother. Beauty quickly succumbs to their fiery breaths, and the gas, which starts to weaken beauty even faster, as her enraged state causes her to breath faster. Then, as the beast falls to the ground, Zanzil will say a catchy phrase before leaving the stadium.
now, was that so hard, people? Sure, not exactly a story, but that's pretty much how Zanzil could win, even with Beauty enraging. It's all in the plot twist.
Arrohon Sep 5th 2011 8:15PM
To everyone that is saying that the pups are smart enough to use the cauldrons I agree. They are smart enough to use the,. Do they know what they do and that they need to though? Sure, if they know they should use them then they will but at this point they would've been ignorant to that fact. Intellegent players die to mechanics all the time. Why? They must do the fight over and over again so they learn what to do. Bosses are smart enough to know to stay out of fire and kill adds but if the room fills with gas, will they know that the cauldron over there will protect them from it? Why would an intellegent being drink from their enemy's pot? With Zanzil it's likely to be poison so I doubt any of the pups will drink from the cauldrons. They'll group up and aoe the zombies, and kite the berserker. They won't know what to do about the gas.

He's trying his hardest...
Guttsu Sep 5th 2011 8:52PM
I seen less than 5% of Wow's raid content, and know nothing of their bosses, however I always feel 100% comfortable voting in these columns blindly.
Arrohon Sep 5th 2011 10:00PM
Most of the bosses here are from 5-mans....
Apple Sep 6th 2011 4:05PM
All of them are 5-man bosses. For this specific reason.
If you don't recognize these two, your PuGs probably skip Beauty in BRC. That's common.
Quaza Sep 5th 2011 10:11PM
If Runty was smart, he'd suicide to the first Zanzil Fire. His mom proceeds to bash Zanzil's skull so hard you couldn't even shrink it afterwards, and Runty respawns later.
alapin Sep 6th 2011 5:08AM
I honestly feel that beauty would win over all. It took some serious nerfing to her mechanics before anyone would even want to fight her on heroic mode while Zanzil would be face rolled with beauty and her pups stacking with the fire cauldron effect roasting his feat Seriously, I sneeze for more damage than Zanzil does on his own even with calling the giant dude or his zombie pack.
MattKrotzer Sep 6th 2011 8:25AM
I voted for Zanzil on the strength of the voice acting alone. I didn't want the fight to end!
Omegan01 Sep 6th 2011 1:48PM
Agreed. Zanzil's voice acting is just plain great.
Deathknighty Sep 6th 2011 5:21PM
So I was just about to click Zanzil due to adds, gas, fire, and much much more, and then I had a wonderful image of a gigantic core hound devouring a troll.
So I voted Beauty.
Joyous_Oblivion Sep 6th 2011 11:39PM
Layman's perspective:
It's a giant freaking dog made of anger and lava, versus a glorified lizard-human thing in the troll.
One drip of molten spit would burn a hole through anything.
Seriously though, Runty dies to poison, Beauty rage-face-crushes Trolly
thekack Sep 9th 2011 7:22AM
Enrage is a "Beauty" thing. While I think in raw damage Zanzil is the more potent foe his aoe damage and lack of CC would be his downfall.
How how would Beauty say "WINNING!"
kulkagod Sep 9th 2011 7:39AM
Nice summary, however he does raise all dead but only Zanzil dead. The pups would not be revived.
kulkagod Sep 9th 2011 7:39AM
Here is something else. Zanzil like most bosses are full of their supremecy. AFter seeing a Core hound and pups chargin after him he would do a poison attack first.
The dogs reaction to other mobs though are tough to discern. They may only attack the boss, they may attack adds. Either way they will die.....unless their fiery pools burn off the poison gas. Than you will have to rely on the zombies and zerker to kill the pups for the enrage to take place. So basically, no enrage no win for Beauty.
