I'll admit, I wasn't expecting How to Win at Fishing. It doesn't seem like an obvious subject for Wowcrendor's trademark brand of humor, but he picked up the subject and knocked it out of the park.
This movie has a slightly different format than most of Wowcrendor's work. Instead of a simple dialogue between Billy and the narrator, How to Win at Fishing mimics common television infomercials. Once Billy's convinced to try fishing, we get an exciting play-by-play of actual in-game fishing action. Interested in the wide world of machinima? I think enough people here should remember how much *worse* fishing was back in Classic and BC to appreciate its current status.
Time per cast was 30 seconds, and if your skill was below that of the zone, you couldn't fish - at all. Oh yes, and the skill levels varied within a zone without any indication what subzone required which skill level. And even if you had the necessary level, you'd be blessed with a lot of 'Your fish got away' messages. Yes, you spent a lot of time waiting for 30 seconds to not get anything in return at all, not even a potential skill-up.
To even get past 225 skill you were forced to travel all over Azeroth: Dustwallow Marsh - Feralas - Desolace - STV - Swamp of Sorrows, one of those quest lines that blantantly favoured one faction over the other, since the Horde had flightpoints close to each quest location whereas the Alliance had to ride - a lot.
Yes, they certainly could improve fishing, but I for one am quite content that it isnt as bad as it used to be...
Fishing was ALOT harder back in the day. Sometimes a fish didn't bite at all. And the skillup curve was much higher. Currently in the 400-450 range it takes on average 19 catches to gain one point. Before they changed it, it would take something like 50 catches per point around the 300 skill level.
Now you don't even need to skillup if you are fishing in pools. And if you are below the "no junk" skill, you get junk you can sell. A few copper here and there may not mean much, but occasionally getting pieces worth 1s is pretty good for a new character, especially considering you don't have to do anything but click a few times.
And let's not forget the easy quests in capitals which can reward you not only with skillups, but vendorable items, and pets, too.
Wish there was something cool to work towards in fishing right now, when I worked towards my turtle I spent god knows how many hours fishing, got several thousand fish and supplied tons of fish feast for my guild that way. Right now ... nothing.

After watching the first part, all I could think of is Powerthirst.
jimforbes40 Sep 5th 2011 12:48PM
^ This! Powerthirst is way funnier than this though. Shame, I usually like Wowcrendors' videos.

It still beats leveling Archaeology.

I suppose I'm in the minority of people who genuinely enjoys Archaeology.

Learning lore and history about the game you play by collecting awesome trinkets/random items that change you and do cool things?
WHILE WAITING IN A DPS QUEUE?
+1 tbh.
