Addon Spotlight: How to update GupPet and more
Each week, WoW Insider's Mathew McCurley brings you a fresh look at reader-submitted UIs as well as Addon Spotlight, which focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond -- your addons folder will never be the same.
We have a couple of fun topics to talk about today on Addon Spotlight, mostly notably what to do with GupPet, my personal favorite mount addon that hasn't been updated in some time. It makes me very sad, you might imagine, that this robust beauty of an addon is sitting unmanned and not updated, requiring my own hand to make things right.
In addition, we've got some questions about action bars and bags, both incredibly important topics. Let's get to it, shall we?
The basic addon still works and does not cause conflicts, but the addon's pet and mount database is woefully outdated since there has been a lot of stuff added since the beginning of the year. If you're a GupPet user, you can easily add your own pets and mounts to the addon so that the database will be complete, and you can access those mounts to give them priority, allow them to be part of the random mount selection and more.
Illume created a wonderful guide last month on Grimmtooth's blog detailing the exact method of going about adding your own mounts to GupPet's database. I recommend reading it over to see exactly how this process is done (with pictures!), but here are the basic steps:
Here is a list of the newest mounts that you can add to your own Gup_MountData.lua instead of having to find it all yourself, up to today's article. Copy these into their respective sections in the file:
[97359]={[1]=true,[10]=true},--Flameward Hippogryph
[98727]={[1]=true,[10]=true},--Winged Guardian
[96503]={[1]=true,[10]=true},--Amani Dragonhawk
[98204]={[1]=true},--Amani Battle Bear
[96491]={[1]=true},--Armored Razzashi Raptor
[96499]={[1]=true},--Swift Zulian Panther
[98718]={[20]=true,[21]=true},--Poseidus (Subdued Seahorse)
I will update GupPet users when new mounts come out, most likely as patch 4.3 comes closer to release. Also, it's recommended to downgrade your GupPet to the last release (version 2.017), as it is less buggy than the newest 2.018 release.
The bars, they are a-changin'
I was under the impression that WoW already changed your bars and layouts automatically when you swapped specs, much like how your bars change when you enter stealth or a vehicle. So for the initial setup, I would try something like Action Bar Saver. Hopefully, this gets you over that initial setup hurdle and gets you playing your alts faster.
AdiBags is my new go-to answer

Addons are what we do on Addon Spotlight. If you're new to mods, Addons 101 will walk you through the basics; see what other players are doing at Reader UI of the Week. If there's a mod you think Addon Spotlight should take a look at, email mat@wowinsider.com.

Hi Mathew,GupPet is in a sad state of affairs. The addon is one of my favorites, period, for its robust pet and mount configuration. Not only can you set priorities and preferences for all of your mounts when you want to randomly call them, but auto-companion pet summoning is included, as well as a built-in collector's interface for finding all of the pets and mounts you are missing. One-button random summoning, 3-D model mount and pet preview, mage, druid, and shaman class support, and more is right there in the package. There's a problem: It hasn't been updated since January.
Guppet hasn't been updated in some time and it doesn't recognize the Flameward Hippogryph. I was wondering if there is another add-on that does a similar function (i.e. randomizing mount selection). I have a ton of mounts across multiple characters and I like to just be surprised what pops out sometimes. Thanks a ton.

- Go to your GupPet folder and find the Gup_MountData.lua. Open it up with your text editor.
- Find a mount that acts like the mount you're adding. Example: Flameward Hippogryph is both a ground mount and flying mount, just like the Flying Machine.
- Copy the similar mount information (don't forget to keep the two dashes). Go to Wowhead and find the ItemID of the new mount (the mount itself, not the item that teaches you the mount). The ItemID appears in the URL for the item. For the Flameward Hippogryph, it would be 97359.
- Copy the ItemID over the similar mount's copied information, change the name of the mount, and save.
- You did it!

The bars, they are a-changin'
Hi Mat,I would recommend an addon that I previewed a while back called Action Bar Saver. This addon allows you to save button and spell layouts and restore them with a simple command.
I have been playing WoW for quite some time. I am a bit of an altoholic. I have 7, 85's, 2 70's and an 80. I do this because I get bored. All of them are duel spec. I use Dominos atm for a bar add-on.
My biggest pet peeve after resetting WoW or changing my bars around is the fact that I have to build the first spec with all my spells lumped into their own little groups such as PvP Cd`s/ DPS/ AOE/Mounts/food/pot's/professions. Then I take a screen shot. I switch to the secondary spec and put all the spells in the exact same way, (for familiarity purposes)then I make the necessary adjustments to fit put the spells in for my secondary spec.
It is very time consuming. I was wondering if knew of an add-on that would copy my spells from my primary spec action bar to my secondary spec action bar, without having to take the screen shot and manually replace them all into place.
Best Regard's
Todd

If you want the ArkInventory experience without the potential bloatedness that ArkInventory can bring, check out AdiBags. It provides a little button on top of your bags with a "T" for Tidy Bags. Pressing this button will tidy up your bags, restacking items together and working exactly the way you want it to. AdiBags was also the subject of my recent Queue, where people were enthralled at my bag addon in the screenshot. Are you still not on the AdiBags bandwagon?
I think this would be the kind of thing for addon spotlight, but I get the titles for the articles I read confused sometimes.
In one of your previous articles, you suggested ArkInventory as a bag addon, and since I was rebuilding my UI at the time, I decided to give it a shot. Now I can't live without it. But it's by far my largest addon and I fear it's slowing me down. I've tried using Bagnon and a couple others, but every addon I've tried is missing one very crucial thing. I find myself unable to live without the restack button. It's amazing. The ridiculous amount of herbs I eat through doing Inscription (and of course you cant mill them if they aren't in nice stacks of 5), the many stacks of items I have in my banks, and it even moves things to specialized bags that they can go into if they aren't already there. I could deal without the sorting and the frame art of Ark if I needed to, but I really missed the restack button when I
tried other addons. Is there another addon with this feature? I have been unable to find one.
Tom

You know, I've been using the Default UI for the 6 years that I've been playing, but never switched to another one. Mainly, because I loathe the point and click feature of all theo ther addons I've seen. I have mapped all of the action bars that the default UI can unleash to key combinations that I can use with my left hand. Now, is there a UI that can accommodate such a request, or am I doomed to use the default one until the end of time?
KyoKenshin Sep 8th 2011 6:42PM
You can key map any of the action bar addons. They all act just like the default action bars except, you know, they can be moved and they don't have to look horrid.
Kasey Carrell Sep 8th 2011 6:56PM
I never knew that! What's a good one that you would recommend? Now I feel totally new and not 6 years into the game. :C

Dominos and Bartender4 are the biggest 2. Dominos uses the in-game code, Bartender does more customisation (I think). I personally prefer Dominos, but plenty of people use Bartender and I was quite happy with it before discovering Dominos.
There are a few addons linked from the Dominos page on Curse which it are worth trying as well. Cooldowns and range colouring are awesome.

I personally use Bartender, and its ease of keybinding is excellent. Hit the Bind Keys button, and you can MOUSE OVER action bar buttons, pressing the corresponding keybind you want for them. Then just leave keybind mode, and you're good to go.

Awesome! Thanks for all the input! I've downloaded Domino to try out a bit. I still have to configure it when I get home from work. All the adjusting and all that, but it frees up SO MUCH ROOM! I'll have to give Bartender a swing too, just so I've tried both sides. Thanks again, helpful WoW Insider commenters!

For the pet/mount addon I use Livestock (can get it off Curse) - and like it a lot :)
Snowfeather Sep 8th 2011 6:51PM
Thank you so much, I had this back in wrath and then deleted it, can't recall why, then I couldn't for the life of me recall what it was called! Been using BurbMount for mounts, but it didn't handle pets.

Has the bug where some flying mounts wouldn't come out been fixed? It was either that or clicking on flying mounts would bring out a land mount. Either way it was totally broken for me when 401 dropped.
Amaxe Sep 8th 2011 10:19PM
They seem to have fixed the land mount bug. I haven't encountered it for awhile

RandomCompanion is my current mount/companion addon of choice.
Easy to setup, easy macro for different mounts/companions etc.

i jumped on the AdiBags bandwagon and it was the best decision ever!
farming the mats i need and sorting out misc junk has been so much easier as well as managing gear sets, i'm surprised blizz hasnt implemented this in the game fully....
Bluelightning Sep 8th 2011 7:29PM
omg this, i love this addon so much, i've never had more organized bags/banks in my whole life :) is there a way though to create a bag sort filter that can move across all the profiles?
Nipah Sep 8th 2011 10:03PM
I did the same thing, finally dropping my beloved Bagnon for Adibags.
However, one thing I did keep from Bagnon was the Bagnon Forever & Bagnon Tooltips bits... they're the ones that show you information on an item when you mouseover it (how many you have total[bags+bank] and how many your other characters have)/
Docseuzz Sep 8th 2011 10:03PM
The only feature is wish adibags had was to separate soulbound and non-soulbound equipment...
Tri Sep 9th 2011 8:00AM
@ Nipah
Get a little addon called BagSync - it will tell you how many of a given item you have across your alts on the tooltips :)
Tri - also on the Adibags bandwagon ^^
Camo Sep 9th 2011 8:22AM
Nope, still Bagnon for me. With Bankstack for sorting, stacking and making a sammich (yes, it is that cool).
Kaesth Sep 8th 2011 6:22PM
I'd recommend trying Livestock if you don't want to muck around with GupPet. I've never really had any issues with it, and it's still up to date.
I'd also suggest that the difference between AdiBags and ArkInventory is the same difference as between sUF and Pitbull, respectively. If you're really interested in complete personal control with the attendant difficulties of having to set things up yourself, AI and PB are the clear choice. If you want powerful presets with a solid amount of functionality, AdiBags and sUF are still a great choice.
I don't think you get bloat. I think you get control. Not everyone needs or wants that, so it's good that there are other options.
Jae Sep 8th 2011 6:24PM
What is the name of the addon in the background of the header image? Looks nice!
Jeff (Not that one ^ ) Sep 8th 2011 6:42PM
Looks like just a bunch of action bars (Dominoes, Bartender) with Masque/Button Facade.
