Phat Loot Phriday: Shard of Torment

"This is the only shield for tanks on its tier," Lolegolas said nearby. "It comes from Baleroc, who is in no way a homage to the beast who fought Gandalf. It also drools fire, which leaves you in an interesting position."
"What?" the Grimtotem shouted. "Oh god, what do you want?"
"The girl? Where is the girl? You know who we mean," Lolegolas said simply.
"We let her go!" the Tauren cried. "In all the confusion, she ran and we just let her go. She ran toward the Elf forest."
Throgg grunted and yanked the Grimtotem away from his shield, tossing the man away contemptuously. "So, we're off to Kalimdor."

Please bring back Draconian Deflector and make it 5 times bigger. Thxbai.

One of the fugliest shields in the game. I am happy to have it on my tank, but man is it aesthetically unpleasing to the eye.

That's why it adds to your dodge and parry instead of your mastery. Mobs would rather not commit to a full attack where they would have to look at it for long making it easier for you to get out of the way.

There are basically three types of shields in World of Warcraft. You got your...
...practical shields (Shield of Impenetrable Darkness, Bulwark of Azzinoth)
...your magical-looking glowy stuff (Aldori Legacy Defender, Titansteel Shield Wall)
...and your shields with faces/skulls on them (Skullflame Shield, Bulwark of Algalon, Neverending Winter)
Not everyone loves the shields with faces, and we had a ton of skulls from the Lich King era (likely due to the expansion theme), but I still like them. This one happens to remind me of Snake Mountain (He-Man). One man's trash, right?
As an aside, I wonder now with Transmogrification if comments regarding appearance preferences will increase or decrease?

I don't know, I really liked the Icecrown Glacial Wall from BQL, and the Heroic Version of Neverending Winter. Wall of Terror was also a great looking shield with a face on it. I wielded the Boreal Guard for far longer than I cared to.
For me it's the horns. I similarly hated the Skull of Ruin and Shieldwall of the Breaker because of the horns / protrusions.
Favorite shield of all time though, and one I am working on going back and getting is the Bullwark of Azzinoth. No more complaining about ugly shield designs once I have that lovely again and can transmog to it's look.

Aren't they in Kalimdor already?

I think so, specifcially on a dry piece of land in Thousand Needles. I'm guessing he means Feralas, as that is a nearby forest of elves.

- "This is the only shield for tanks on its tier,"
My biggest gripe with this expansion. Loot choices typically range from "the only bracers in the tier" to "you can use this one or the Valor Point one".
And yeah, 2nd ugliest shield ever. The Heroic version is worse . . .

Oh, sure, like the Grimtotem isn't going to lie to them just to keep his face from getting burned off.

I finished reading this column and the Indiana Jones theme started playing in my head. ^_^

Would a Tauren, even a Grimtotem, say "oh god"? :P
Thomas Higgins Sep 10th 2011 4:50AM
Oh yeah, particularly if he has a very pissed off Orc, Blood Elf and Worgen staring at him with the ol' hairy eyeball.

Absolutely not. This column does not even try to work with the lore, and hasn't for a long, long while.
Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, since it's still a great column and all.
