Breakfast Topic: What happened to the mouse?
TV Tropes is justifiably known as one of the most dangerous sinkholes on the internet, and recently I spent hours winding my way through the entry on What Happened to the Mouse? For the uninitiated, the trope concerns secondary or minor characters and plot lines that go unresolved. Some better-known examples include the remaining dinosaur embryos in Jurassic Park, Saruman's fate in the film version of The Return of the King, and what happened to the Libyans in Back to the Future.
Probably the most famous unresolved story line in the history of WoW was that of The Missing Diplomat, which for years was an iconic Alliance quest in pursuit of the missing Stormwind king. You ended up in Dustwallow Marsh with Jaina Proudmoore's thanks for having tracked down one of the conspirators, and then ... silence. Until Wrath of the Lich King, players wondered what on earth had happened to King Wrynn.
Blizzard seems to be wrapping up a few stories that had been eluding players for a while (most recently, where Maeiv Shadowsong went after the battle with Illidan), but others remain. I have two personal favorites: The quest that Chromie gives you in Dragonblight that strongly hints at something weird going on with Nozdormu (admittedly, Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects sort of addresses this), and a question cryptically answered by Chris Metzen and Alex Afrasiabi in the first round of Ask CDev concerning the ultimate fate of Frostmourne. Is there any mouse-like storyline or quest thread you'd still like to see finished in game?

The Sea Witch in the troll starting area - I'm guessing she's related to Azshara and we'll see her in the Undersea Adventure expansion. After Zuni, well, it seems like a pretty big loose end for my character.

Vashj'ir was enough. No more little mermaid please.

I believe she is the same sea witch from WCIII that hounded the Trolls off their first set of islands (and killed off poor ol' Sen'jin to boot).
I think she came after us, and Vol'jin put his foot down... literally.

Well I wouldn't call it unresolved per se, but I want to know wht the hell Thrall just agreed to let Gallywix lead the goblins under th Horde. It's like, I know Thrall is trusting but that just all seemed way too hastily tied together and just... it didn't sit right with me.
MattKrotzer Sep 12th 2011 8:24AM
Beyond that... where IS Gallywix, anyway?
Sleutel Sep 12th 2011 8:40AM
Presumably, Thrall doesn't think it's his business to interfere with the internal politics of the races he's leading the alliance of. Imagine if, after the 2000 presidential election, Kofi Annan* had said, "Hey, America, due to the irregularities with this election, I'm not going to accept George Bush as President."
*Secretary General of the U.N. from 1997 to 2006, for you young 'uns.
MattKrotzer Sep 12th 2011 8:45AM
Not quite an apt comparison, since what the Horde does impacts it's member races, while what the U.N. does makes little difference at all to the United States.

Not to forget that we actually fought alongside Thrall AGAINST Gallywix.
Snuzzle Sep 12th 2011 9:14AM
The goblins had actively revolted against Gallywix though, and he tried to sell them all off into slavery. He DID actively enslave a great portion of them, too.
The Thrall I know would have let the goblins decide. By your logic, Sleutel, Thrall had no rights to make the decision at all... either in favor of or against Gallywix.

Would Kofi Annan have still held such a neutral opinion if W had tried to kidnap him and sell him into slavery, and only failed in the attempt due to the timely intervention of Dick Cheney, who also just narrowly escaped from being sold into slavery by W?
...
Man, this is one trippy hypothetical scenario.

Thrall lacks foresight. This ain't news. Seriously, the Earthen Ring is considering taking away his "Farseer" title and downgrading him to "the Myopic".

We were left with a "for now" from Thrall at the end of the starting zone, as he had to continue towards the maelstrom. Garrosh doesn't seem likely to move against Gallywix unless/until he tries to double cross the Horde.
Which adds another bit of unresolved plot, though. What was the intent of the Alliance insignia sent back to Garrosh from Thrall? Though that one is probably linked with the larger story of Garrosh as Warchief, which is still being told here and there in small ways.
awall Sep 12th 2011 9:41AM
As to "where is Gallywix?" A large number of the Goblins he just betrayed are counted among some of Azeroth's strongest heroes. So he's probably in an armored bunker somewhere trying not to get killed.

To the detriment of the Horde, Thrall chose to put/leave two dangerous leaders in charge of their factions, Garosh and Gallywix. The main reason was that Thrall had to deal with Deathwing and didn't have the time to waste dealing with the orcs and the goblins. Leaving two inadequate leaders in charge was the simplest solution for Thrall. Once Deathwing was dealt with, the lesser problems could be handled.

"where IS Gallywix, anyway?"
He's in Azshara. Look at the map of it and you can see his pleasure palace. You need a toon with a flying mount (so not your lowbie goblin alt that just got told by Thrall to re-accept the boss you just finished overthrowing). You can fly up there and see him and his cronies acting like its Spring Break.
Killik Sep 14th 2011 5:40AM
Gallywix is not in his pleasure palace.

In Jurassic Park, the Embyros that went missing are a story line for the new game coming out seen at E3 this year. Saruman get's stabbed in the back by Wormtongue and then falls to his death at Orthanc while being addressed by the heros in the special edition extended cut of the films, and for the Libyans, I have no idea because I have never seen that film! Just my two cents
RS Sep 12th 2011 8:25AM
You never saw Back to the Future?
Get thee to a DVD player!
Littleeye Sep 12th 2011 8:43AM
Didnt the Lybians drive into a small building and explode? I guess I should see the movie again (great excuse to go see it for the 24th time! :) )
ShadowPriest Sep 12th 2011 10:10AM
At the end there is a story about the Libyans being arrested.
